Woohoo! That’s my dad! I’ve heard stories of this competition, but I just saw this for the first time. He’s got four kids now and we’re all proud of our smart dad!
That is awesome, he seems like a great guy, be very proud of him, he's terrific Just curious (it's fine if you don't know) but how did he audition to become a contest on SOTS?
This whole thing about Kate beating John, becoming the new champion, defeating him to win the whole thing, and ending up winning everything, reminds me of the US version of Sale, when Alice defeats Michael, which was one step away from winning it all, and ending up winning all the prizes and the jackpot. The turns the world gave and game shows did, are insane!
Alice Conkright (spelling may be wrong). She went on the Australian version in a "USA vs Aussie" competition. And of course, wore that purple dress with the blue V. th-cam.com/video/0W3sasbTFpc/w-d-xo.html
SPOILER ALERT: Wow, I actually remember watching this episode! I was 9 years old. And I remember being mad at Kate for winning! But I also remember that she also went on to WIN the whole thing! So I remember thinking: well, she was right to beat him, because she was a true champion too.
It's kind of funny what Tony predicted at the beginning of the show. It would end up being almost ten years before the format of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" wound up taking the world by storm. Still, it makes me wonder if $ale will ever be back in any form someday. In the States, it lasted for six years in the 80s, and an attempt to bring the Temptation format over in the mid-2000s was a disaster.
Probably not. Quiz shows still work, the issue is the money involved. Back when Sale was on, most people still sat down and watched commercial tv after or over dinner, so you could afford to give away a $20,000 trip every night, or a $60,000 car, because the sponsors were happy for the airtime. To do the same today, the prizes would be lower and it'd be less interesting to watch in general, because the format relies on large prizes. The reason The Chase works so well and is still running is because the format allows for lower prizes while still being entertaining. Generally only 1 in 5 shows will be a winner and they only have to pay out around $20-30k once a week, compared to that almost every night.
Here's what aired in primetime in the States: ABC- Full House (The I.Q. Man), Family Matters (Flashpants), Perfect Strangers (New Kid on the Block), Going Places (Another Saturday Night), 20/20 CBS- Evening Shade (Whatever Happened to Clutch Newton?), Bagdad Cafe (Not Enough Cooks), Movie (Children of the Bride) Fox- America's Most Wanted, D.E.A. (Prime Mover) NBC- Quantum Leap (The Leap Home, part 2- April 7, 1970), Night Court (A Family Affair, part 2), Wings (The Story of Joe), Midnight Caller (The Language Barrier) In late night: Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (Robert Klein, Jackie Collins, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) Late Night with David Letterman (Siskel & Ebert, Bootsy Collins, Aidan Quinn, Seth Kinast, The J.B.'s) Into the Night Starring Rick Dees (Joe Nipote) Arsenio Hall Show (Alan Thicke, Hall & Oates)
@@katebuck100 Well, congratulations, Kate, on winning the lot. Considering you were the second-biggest winner in the show's 20+ year history in Australia, it sounds like it was an impressive haul.
Wow, it was no such thing that John Sergeant about to take home the entire prize package. But a School Teacher (Kate Buckingham) stopped him from becoming the highest winning person ever in the history of Sale of The Century.

I think Kate went onto win the lot including the money if I recall - so no shame in John losing.
She indeed did.
@@katebuck100 do you still own the VN Berlina? Or did you sell it?

This can’t be the actual host of the game, he’s as bad as if they had picked someone random off the street.
Just curious, where did you get these master copies from?
(Also, do you have anymore Australian Sale eps?)
These copies were passed and copied to video traders
I have a decent number of additional episodes that you probably will see in the future.
The Guy with the Games what about with the departure of Tony Barber and Alyce and Platt and the arrival of Glenn Ridge and Jo Bailey?
