Had $10k cash in vegas hotel room safe, came back, it was gone. Had a heart attack, talked to the manager of the hotel and found out about the default password. I said then what's the point of the safe if the maids all know it? He comped me $10k in chips and I lost anyways.
Are you saying I couldve left some cash in the safe and then go down to the desk and tell them that I lost 10k or more and they will give me casino chips? And I mean like $50 😅
Whites Face probably have to be very convincing and panicked but they can't not I don't think unless they say it's not their fault in fine print if anything goes missing
They are suppose to change the default password on delivery. Having worked in a hotel and worked along side the engineering department. I can tell you that not all safe's are like this above. In other cases its done with special tools only given to the engineering dept.
@@scooterpickle8625 Yes. I also work in engineering and there's a data line that goes under the keypad of the safe. It is controlled by a modulator where you can perform a reset if there isn't a key. We prefer this method as we have numerous keys as they are suited differently for each safe. This safe in the video isn't like the ones we have. It is set for one and only code. There is no default code. The code resets once the safe is open.
Sarcasm maybe more befitting for you, either way, it got him another 71 thumbs up so far. Irony - 'the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.'
I just wanted to point that each hotel sets its safe to have a different default password. Some hotels don't give the default password out to the rank and file, and keep it Manager level only. However, creating awareness to find the answer to the question of who does and does not have the password, and if it's a "default" or not is a good thing. You earned my like. =D
There has to be a way for the staff to be able to open the safe when idiots like this forget the code. With that said, 000000 is the default and should have been changed. Also know this, In California your valuables are ONLY covered if they are in the safe. Your safe logs information and can be audited to determine what code was used when. And before you try to lie and say your stuff was stolen, your electronic door can be audited as well to determine who entered your room and when.
Why do you find that strange or surprising? The purpose is to have SOME protection for vital documents (especially your passport) while you're away from the room. It isn't always smart to walk in a city you're unfamiliar with with your wallet, car keys, passport and $500...
I literally found this video after going on youtube via wayback from another site and seeing this in the "trending" section with 400k views. Clicked it, no dice so here we are back in the present. Thats some really cool advice though so thanks for posting!
I know exactly what you mean! I never used safes since they are the first place people look for things of value. I would prefer hiding my things anywhere less obvious and its even safer to use the safes at the main counter where the staff and management is since they would assume liability as apposed to you being out of luck with the safes in the individual rooms.
I remember waiting one morning for the maid to come, of course i don't stay in the room when she does her job, so I left and she comes running out telling me I left the safe door open 😂 I asked what happens if people forget their password, she told me about the default code being so easy. I was kinda shocked
Thanks! Now when I go on my scubadiving trip next week, I'll be sure to bring my laptop, ipod, phone and anything else valuable into the water with me!
I just noticed this works for my hotel safe. A good tip is to change the default code on your safe to a new value during your stay. Watch: th-cam.com/video/zEp9GlUC6hA/w-d-xo.html (Just remember to change it back to the default before your check-out so as not to inconvenience a fellow traveler who has forgotten his code)
under the safe label sticker, if you pull it out, you will find a plug in. that plug use to open the safe without the code... they use to connect a device and simulate the code. it comes with when you buy a digital safer.
it looks like a model that they can reset over a USB cable in a few minutes, so actually it doesn't matter what you entered or what is the factory default, they will always be able to open it when you are away.
@premofour good point but the same concept applies. If you are going to be staying in a hotel maybe you shouldn't leave stuff that valuable in your room while you are away. Take it with you at least. I would never leave something that important to me in a hotel room safe or no safe.
This is certainly good information to be aware of & should alert the people who use these in-room safes to ask the hotel management to temporarily change the default password while the room is being occupied by them. grazie, giovanni
@usaearthling exactly my thought. this vid helped save me from grieving over having to trade my time for money, when i can just use the technique shown to relieve others of their money, adding to their grief and wasting their time.
@SchneiderStudios Please tell me you're joking. A good safe should be bolted to the ground seeing how someone could just take it back home and open it with his/her own equipment.
I seem to be fiddling around with it a little bit, you do know is that the passcode will not always be 0000. Although that is the correct passcode, once you push clear, it will ask you for a new passcode. In which the case, it will not be 0000. It will be a passcode of your own, in which, you cannot unlock because it used to be 0000. I did not put anything in mind however, however, I did like it to see how it worked because if I thought it was out of order or not working, I couldn’t use it for hours until I found this.
@skyrangerpro it's really not as unsafe as you think, when the hotel purchases the safe, they are the ones that program the default code just in case any person, like you, forget's his or her password. It's also if someone locks their safe with nothing in it, and then the person checks out and it's still locked. I agree this particular hotel is stupid for setting the reset as something that easy, but each hotel will have a separate default, and only the managers know it.
I wish more people knew this. Just read from the news how someone got robbed for 1000€ in the safe while sleeping. And someone commented: "they couldn't been sleeping because they opened the safe without cracking it"
All 0s may be the "override" code for that particular kind of safe. The safe I had experience with required a special piece of electronics be plugged in or a special key in order to open. No override code by default. You had to have one of those two things which only the head of maintenance had.
It's up to to the hotel to change the default password from that of the manufactures. The hotels you have been in clearly haven't done that. At the hotel I work at we have 7 unique passcodes, 1 for each floor and only the tk has access to the codes. Furthermore most hotels keep a record of who cleans the room so if you do find your valuables lost they can easily see who clean said room. It is still better to leave them in the safe if you don't want to carry them around. any lock you put on the luggage is usually easy to open. Of course, it is not 100% safe, but it is better than nothing. imho, the best safe is home. Just leave your valuable at home.
Here in Las Vegas Clark County ruled against default passcodes. All safes must be set Electronic via EoIP (Yes, hard to tell but data transferred to hotel security via Ethernet/Internet) and if you forget the password, you call security (Normally #771) verify basics and usually have you put room card in door slot and bam, unlocked safe and no more password.
There is a product that can help keep your items safe in your hotel room safe - it is called a Milockie Hotel Safe Lock and allows you to put your own lock on your hotel safe. Search for Milockie on TH-cam and you will see how it works.
It depends on how lazy the hotel is. The electronic safes have them preset to all 0's but can be changed. Good hotels change the default passwords to something else that is kept with the manager. But this is a good video for those leaving stuff in electronic safes.
Some hotels have key safes. If your worried look for those, you can even call ahead and ask before you reserve a room! Of course the front desk will have a spare safe key for your room in case you lose yours. If you lose the key, there will almost definitely be a large fee associated with replacing it.
Most safes i know work with magnetic cards. Just pass any card you want and it will only open with it. But, once again, Staff does have a master key for each safe and the master key for all rooms. Anyway, if you re traveling with valuables, you are just taking a chance. You can get mugged in the street any moment.
This is common with a lot of things from Routers to those Construction Light Signs. The only thing holding people back is access to the controls. So getting past a locked door is really the only security you have. Surprising considering how far we've come and the irony is doors have gotten thinner and easier to kick in lol.
Those things take about 15 seconds to get into even if you don't have the default pass. When hotels buy those they get the cheapest one. It's probably safer to leave stuff in your car
It probably is safer in the car if its not visible, with a safe its obvious that it might contain valuable items and if its a small and not very good safe it can be a burglar magnet .
@boostedwolfie What? It's much easier to steal something outside of a safe, the safe prevents people from stealing by locking up your valuables to they aren't easily accessible. If a hotel maid, or someone who isn't make a decent living has access to your code, what's stopping them from taking something? Your valuables are now easily accessible, and a maid could say "No, I didn't steal them" and get away fine.
@jesseemessi I'm sure any other person would try all zeroes if they broke into a room and got to a safe, especially if the person who locked it was pretty lazy with the code.
@Crisyratops he isnt assuming, he is just warning you to check if the master pass in any hotel you are staying is as simple as this one, just to be careful.
@mollysextonrocks you obviously need a code to lock it and a code to unlock it... if they unlock it, how will they know the code you used to close it when you get back and try to open it?
@TrollingIsGay I thought the same thing at first, but the video does more good than harm. If someone is really aspiring to steal from your safe, they're likely already aware of the default password. I'd be more worried at this point of an IRL troll breaking in, and taking things out of the safe to hide them.
you helped people not get there stuff stolen but as many people you helped not get there stuff stolen you helped just as many people know how to steal stuff from hotel safes
I would be a little concerned about the standard of management at that particular hotel. The admin default password can and should be changed when installing the room safe. This post reminds us that you can not always rely on the hotels to take adequate security precautions. To leave the default unchanged is just plain stupid and indicates little consideration for the room occupants. All zero's is a very common default and as such should never be left as a combination if security is an issue.
Isnt is obvious that if all zeros is not the default password, any other combination of numers will be. Otherwise, what would you do if you really forguet the combination?
@iamzero79 It actually resets every time it's opened... And most of these safes have a master key slot that can be opened in the event that someone checks out and leaves the safe locked or the person staying forgot their password...
i wanna ask, if u enter the default code, can u close the safe after u opened it, and use again the last pass u locked safe with ? since i have a thought, that u might didnt forget it, but some1 allready opened it before ? and entered random code to lock it back ..
The Hotel I’m staying right now has a master password of 8888. A good safe should only be able to be override with a master key in charge of the manager or owner of the place
I am currently staying in a hotel right now in Las Vegas and happened to stumble upon this video. I tried it out on my room's safe (which I do not use anyway) and this code did not work on the one in my room. So if there is a default password, it must be different for different hotels.
guys this is just that particular hotels safety default code...when you buy a safe like that you can program your own default code, every hotel will use a different one, this one just stupidly choose an easy one. It's really not that as unsafe as you think, it's not like every house keeper knows that, only managers know the default code and it's just as likely to be 374726 depending on the hotel.
