  • In this episode, we return to the Civil War era farm. If you had a cellar in your home and you lived in a climate that froze part of the winter, chances were you had a cold room. What was that? Join us as we visit with Brian James Egen and take a tour of a typical cold room. We explore how it worked and what was kept inside.

Something I would love to see would be the yearly process to when things were started and completed around the homestead for that time period. There is a ton of info on bits and pieces of how to, but nothing in one cohesive step by step process. I guess the Macro connecting points to all those more in-depth how to’s.
Example: When to plant different crops, when to harvest? When to practice animal husbandry, when to cull the flock/herd? When to begin getting ready for winter? What things to take care of during Summer, Spring, Fall? Would make for a great series, as a day in the life over the course of the year.

Love to see an episode on canning. As mentioned the lids wouldn't be right for our time period, but canning was around and used. Also, something on wax sealers.
    Great episode!

Sorry for necroposting, but I would be interested in mid 19th century home canning and technology, as well.

We called it a root cellar. Used the outside slanted cellar door steps, put a door on the inside downstairs, put boards in side slots inside the downstairs door to remove each board as the stores went down. Can reach over to get supplies easily. (like potatoes, onions, squash, whatever) Works great.

*LIKED* another informative video - thanks pards. My grandfather owned a meat market, and other set of grandparents farmed - I wish they were still with us and could talk about their early memory's of food preservation ... this would have been from the 1930/1940's or so.
