Love this clip. Thanks for posting it! My husband, Joe Clayton, is on the drums. He's an actual percussionist (conga player) but for this Redd Foxx Show he & the other band members in "Dr. Sausage's Band, the Porkchops" only pretended to play instruments.
This is a real classic. I remember watching the Redd Foxx Comedy Hour....yeah, I WAS THE ONE... This was my favorite part, and Mr. Johnson, I mean Bill Saluga, was a big part of what made it work! Thanks for posting it.
Wow does this bring back some awesome memories! Being a huge Sanford & Son fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this very short-lived series. Along with Dr Sausage, Foxx did a recurring skit called "Alphonse and Victoria" which was extremely funny! Wish I could see all of those shows on TH-cam
Redd Foxx was one of the funniest comics of his time. I mean when parents make sure the kids are in bed before pulling out the Redd Foxx album to liven up the party you know he was something different. He also showed he could be very funny without having to use foul language as his constant punch line. The mark of a truly great comedian.
I took my girlfriend and parents to see a Redd Foxx show in Houston about 1975. I had no idea that Redd Foxx had X-rated albums. His act was laced in profanity but we all loved it. Redd Foxx’s friend, Slappy White, was on tour with Redd. There were a lot of small venues then so getting great seats was always easy. The last concert I went to see was Queen in 2019 in a 60,000 stadium in Houston and I could barely see them perform. The tickets were $550! When I was a kid I got to see The Rolling Stones for $1. I got to see the Doors for a dollar too. Same with The Beau Brummels. It’s sad people growing up now will never realize there was a time when ticket resellers didn’t exist and you could get front row seats to any concert. I took my girlfriend to see Joe Cocker at the Cullen Building on the University of Houston campus for $7. We were directly in front of the stage, front row, and there were two mountain sized speakers beside Joe Coker. We couldn’t hear for a few weeks. We were drunk on MD2020 when we were at the concert. I hope corrupt companies like Ticketmaster will one day disappear.
This is such fun.! Enjoyed EVERYONE in this! Seeing Saluga's RJJ, jr. in this setting makes me realize what a natural he would have been to have been included in Speilberg's "1941" (1979) especially in the zootsuit-jitterbug contest scenes. What a missed opportunity!
memories what memories redd foxx and his show will always and should have a stay in everyones mind when you need to feel good and just to laugh youre head off. redd in this year2012 and beyond i miss you. thanks for the memories peace.
Also in this skit was Hal Smith, better known as Otis, the Mayberry town drunk. Thanks for the post. I have a few of Redd's variety show skits on video, but not this episode.
I think the man complaining about the watch was Slappy White. He appeared on "Sanford and Son" a few times as one of Fred's buddies. I'm sure most people recognized Hal Smith, who played Otis Campbell on "The Andy Griffith Show".
I saw Slappy at a Redd Foxx concert in 1975 in Houston. I took my girlfriend, mom and dad. He used material right from his albums. I was embarrassed at first but saw my mom laughing so I was relieved. We had a fantastic time. That was Redd’s haydays era.
People's can't make comedy like this now People's minds aren't pure anymore every body's love saying and acting foolish no just pure fun just a whole lot of FOOLISHNESS no comedy what so ever okay 👌 BELIEVE this
i loved this show.. anybody know what episode had the talent portion where the announcer (probalby bill saluga) said "tonight ladies and gentlemen we have two losers" and/or the one(s) where they said "i bet jimmy carter cant do this" and then they balanced a bunch of chairs?
I disagree. Raymond J Johnson akla Billy Salgua, the real actor, is every bit as funny as anyone has a right to be. I rank him with Billy Barty, and the already late and lamented Billy De Wolfe. So there bear.
Jeez, how great was TV back then!! You laughed at shows like this that were just simple. There was no seeing how far you could push the button. Today shows are just stupid and not even funny. How sad.
with donny n marie and sonny n cher.....i guess variety shows were in during this period.....i find nothing about this skit funny....was not a very wise move on redd's part...."one in the hand is worth more than two in the bush"....he had a hit/well establish/popular show on nbc that his was being paid $30k per episode(and when he left sanford & son it was still popular in the ratings)....and he would leave because abc offered him grand pay day but cancelled his show mid-season...truth be told i was a sanford &son fan but the show became unfunny to me after season 4...by the end of season 6 it was still popular n did well in the ratings but i found unfunny n no longer entertaining......when redd's show on abc was cancelled nbc offered him he chance to revive sanford n son but they would not meet demond wilson's salary demands and he refused to return....therefore the name of show was brought back as sanford n only lasted one season...
If you put this much entertainment on TV today it would fall off the wall and break. Amazing performances from all involved.

I think it's pretty obvious they weren't actually playing instruments.
Your comment is actually the coolest one! I can only imagine how much fun he had doing this with Mr. Foxx. 😆 An awesome memory.
Great memories. Redd Foxx's show was a riot. Totally loved it.
I was learning how to play clarinet when this show was on & my brother called me Dr. Sausage for years after that.
This is a real classic. I remember watching the Redd Foxx Comedy Hour....yeah, I WAS THE ONE... This was my favorite part, and Mr. Johnson, I mean Bill Saluga, was a big part of what made it work! Thanks for posting it.
You're not alone. I watched it too.
I used to watch this back in 1977-78 just to see Billy Saluga as Raymond J. Johnson Jr.
No you didn't
@@Tvirus12 Yes, I did.
PROS!! Haaaa! i miss this kind of showbiz... That natural spontaneity can't be beat!

Redd Foxx not use foul language? Have you ever listened to his albums? :)

"I want my money back; you said 'Satisfaction Guaranteed.'"
"Well, I got your 50, and I can guarantee you that I'm completely satisfied!"
I didn't realize how much I miss Billy Barty until now.
John Twomey is my dad. I never knew he was on this show. Fun to find.
Is he still a "manualist"?
He is my uncle and I never met you.
They don't make comedy like this anymore#Classic
Wow. I remember this show, and the skit too ... :-)
I remember laughing so hard as a kid, that I was crying. Loved Mr. Johnson!
Admit it....you (just like me) would repeat that whole "Johnson" bit right along with him, right?
memories what memories redd foxx and his show will always and should have a stay in everyones mind when you need to feel good and just to laugh youre head off. redd in this year2012 and beyond i miss you. thanks for the memories peace.
Back then there was only 3 networks. So you gotta figure there was anywhere between 30 to 100 million people watching this. Lol
Classic! Great stuff!
"Anita Bryant drove her car across a river yesterday, yeah she didn't want to take a fairy." LOL
It's funny they had the dude who played Melvin in Sanford and son on here
Foxx is like " is it over yet?".
Unknown Comic was so incorrect, but so good
I used to watch this show........it was so F in funny he could make you laugh till you cry!!! The best skit was Alphonse and Victoria.
at 1:49 that's actor hal j. smith -- otis campbell from the andy griffith show. he was in every episode of this show playing a role.
That IS Otis!
this routine gets funnier every time you watch it!
"America Got Talent" predecessor
You can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay!

1:50 Hal Smith in the blue suit (Hal Smith played Otis the town drunk in The Andy Griffith Show)
There actually WAS a real Doctor Sausage and his Five Pork Chops!
Thank you.
Also in this skit was Hal Smith, better known as Otis, the Mayberry town drunk. Thanks for the post. I have a few of Redd's variety show skits on video, but not this episode.
GIT THE FUCK OUT OF HERE THAT IS NOT OTIS FROM ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW
Yes, that was Hal Smith. Watch his facial expressions after Raymond J. Johnson comes on. . .
Antoine Emory You Need Glasses! Lol! That Was Hal Smith.
Antoine Emory it was Otis.
@@Michael1966W he walked off to get a drink 🤣🤣
Otis! My Man! trivia - Hal Smith was also the very first Ronald McDonald
I think the man complaining about the watch was Slappy White. He appeared on "Sanford and Son" a few times as one of Fred's buddies. I'm sure most people recognized Hal Smith, who played Otis Campbell on "The Andy Griffith Show".
yes that was Slappy

They can’t make shoes as good as these anymore.
(1:48) Is that Hal Smith (Otis from The Andy Griffith Show)?
@goodgirl319 And of course, there's Billy Barty doing his own version of the Johnson stick within this same sketch.
People's can't make comedy like this now People's minds aren't pure anymore every body's love saying and acting foolish no just pure fun just a whole lot of FOOLISHNESS no comedy what so ever okay 👌 BELIEVE this
I forgot how funny the show was
And what's funny now?
America's Funniest Home Videos? Watching people getting injured. Hilarious.
i loved this show.. anybody know what episode had the talent portion where the announcer (probalby bill saluga) said "tonight ladies and gentlemen we have two losers" and/or the one(s) where they said "i bet jimmy carter cant do this" and then they balanced a bunch of chairs?
Elizabeth, i coming to meet you.
True comedy lol
What episodes was Raymond Johnson on in Sanford and son
Corny and politically incorrect but funny anyway. Gotta love the 70s.
One person called him Johnson
How sad.
Kinda wonder who he was imitating ? Bert Kaemfert?
Was Redd Really playing the instrument?
everything you cant say today ,,
Jim Cornette sent me here.
I Think The Name Ray J Has Already Been Taken.
Is this after sanford and son and before sanford
Yes.
I wonder if Obama ran into the same problem as did Redd when he nominated the Head of Homeland Security?(You can call me Jeh).
Olsen and Johnson… hmmm…
Can’t a man relax.
Was reddit fox born with blonde hair?
I looked this up b/c of the same problem Bobby Hill had...same outcome...Raymond J sucks.
Hey now!!! You doesn't has to call him Raymond J...it was funny back then.
I'm sick of him already!

I agree with Bobby Hill. Johnson ain't funny.
