    i used to know a guy who lived out in the woods 2 or 3 miles from the main road and several miles more from his nearest neighbor. For ages him and his dogs fought a constant war with ticks. Then 1 of his friends gave him a bunch of guineas , within 2 or 3 months he never saw a tick again. They aint the smartest animal, but they love to eat ticks.

    Your story about your first house is the story of our life. Some diy was a similar fail but we learned from each one. We are a Navy family and have lived several different dreams. We purchased our first home and did a new paint job in each room. We learned red enamel paint is a big fail. It was great for the kids with a circus stream. When we painted over it when we were ready to sell we used a latex paint that after drying you could peal it off the wall. It looked good but must have been a nightmare for the new buyers. We jilt a home on 160 acres in Wisconsin, but the cold got to us. 6 homes in Fl and at age 79 and 83 we are ready to move again. My dream is for 2 acres and many chickens. Never stop dreaming it keep you young.

    • @deestrawser2423
      @deestrawser2423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Addie! You're really energetic to take on 2 acres next. I'm 67 now and it's finally sinking in that I just can't do all things I once did. I did well getting out my spring garden but having second thoughts about putting in a fall garden. I hope it's just the heat slowing me down and my "get-up-and- do" returns soon. Best wishes with your endeavors.

    • @addieanderson2043
      @addieanderson2043 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@deestrawser2423 Thank you Dee. I would have mostly flowers and a small amount of vegetables. I am interested in the genetics of the chicken and would keep several small flocks for breeding. I have a lawn tractor and do realize how much land 2 acres is as I have lived on 160 acres and a small 2 acres property. At this time it is a dream as we have to find the right property in Indian River County, Florida. I have had chickens, turkeys and for 15 years I raised parrots. I had 25 breeding pairs. At my age you have to keep dreaming and the chickens keep me active and moving. If it required I would hire some one to mow and keep the property in good shape. Keep moving Dee but cut back on things that don’t make you happy .

    • @deestrawser2423
      @deestrawser2423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@addieanderson2043 Yeah, I also think two acres is the ideal amount of land for seniors like us. Indian River is a great area in Florida! I never found the right man to share 160 acres, LOL, but I have had six acres with a barn, garden, and one-acre pond in the past. I dream of getting around six chickens in the near future. Thanks for the reply.

    Love the Chicken City idea! You spoke about your dreams driving how you live, follow your dreams. You both remind us of our younger days. We love camping, gardening, canning, flowers, and greenhouse.
    We are retired and find ourselves unable physically to continue to follow our dreams. We encourage you to make sure that you protect your bodies as you perform physical labors on your farm and protect yourselves from chemicals regardless how harmless they appear. When we were young we thought we were invincible and worked hard to obtain our dreams. Never thought that we would be any different physically. We are retired firefighter paramedics and our bodies are shot. This has prevented our continuation of our dreams; it broke my heart when we sold our 5th wheel Travel Supreme with a Freightliner Sport Chasis truck. We now enjoy our dreams by watching and listening to your videos.
    Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. I love Nuggets morning runs. I am up at all hours of the night and laugh often watching the feathered group, I love them so. Maybe Marycarl will have a hatching/egg business, or maybe Jason will be a wholesale flower producer supplying florists, or maybe providing organic clean produce to farm markets or even through online sales to folks like myself.
    God bless your family.
    Sincerely,
    Victoria

Just some ideas for you! You two are just modern day pioneers!!Whatever works for you! All the more reason to take a small fig bush with you to the Big 40! At least you'll know where the peacocks are if they fly away! Give you phone # to the new owners and they will call you if they come back! Hinge the top half of the back wall of the huts and open and close it when necessary! Put screening on the hut in the open area. Looks like your move is on track! God Bless!

    You'd be very surprised how useful a shipping container would be. After you've stored your house hold stuff, mouse and rat and weather proof, You can use it as your feed room/shop/workshop. They make great feed rooms. Set it where your barn is going to be, and build your barn over it. When it is under cover/roof it doesn't get as hot, nor sweat in the winter, and rat proof if you cover your vents with hard ware cloth. On top is a great space for hay storage, if you plan your barn tall enough over it. That is what I'd do, if I get a chance at another place.

    Brooke, whatever you do, do not get “progressive” lenses in your glasses. And if you ever think about trifocals…Just get two pair glasses. I have, over the many years for glasses…get bifocals for reading in the bottom and computer glasses in the top. Then if you need distance/driving glasses…get sunglasses with that prescription and also get non-sunglasses for night. But, take your time on glasses. I totally agree with searching for frames and then get your prescription filled. That saves a ton of money.

    • @hollymcrae2685
      @hollymcrae2685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have always liked my progressive lenses! Don’t think I could handle the lined bi-focus lenses.

    • @sharonrimsza7960
      @sharonrimsza7960 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hollymcrae2685 The problem with progressive lenses is the worse your eyesight becomes the narrower your line of visibility gets narrower and narrower. If you are an avid reader you will need to rotate your head left and right to keep the text in the narrow line of sight you have.
      Your sight must not be bad yet. Progressive lenses gives you a vertical line if sight in the middle of each lense. It will be wider at first and then as your eyesight wanes that vertical line of sight gets narrower with each time you get a newer prescription.

    When you talked about the different types of figs I have to wonder what catagory the figs I have fall into. Very large figs with green skins and red pulp. The birds love them! Very sweet and make the best jam. We also like to add them to our morning smoothies.

    Have one fowl city and cross streets to the duck city, geese city, chicken city, turkey city etc. Each will have it's own lane. The sheriff's office could be centralized. Too cute! Can't see what you do.

    I wish Mary Carl would breed African Gray Parrots. The least one baby sells for at at pet swap is $800. Much more than chickens. Most people want to had feed their own babies as they are much more tame. I did it for 17 years. Their talking abilities is fantastic.

    Check out Carolina Car Ports. We had a 10X20 storage shed with a garage door. You could have it set on a concrete floor. They installed ours in two days. We have had it 3 years and are very happy with it. We asked them to leave the cut offs and built 4 4x4 chicken houses roofs and still have some left.

    Train the runners to grow on a trellis. Go take a look at deep south homestead and what they are doing may give you ideas . Danny can grow a lot of nice looking food and they grow just about everything their selves.

    FYI on the pods, sometimes they double stack those in storage and/or transit and the roof is damaged. Please make sure it doesn't leak before you use it. They are a great option but be careful, my friend lost alot due to a leak. Good Luck!!!

    You could build an old western town for the chickens, etc. You could put a saloon, a livery stable with a corral and an upstairs over the saloon and put a swinging sign on the porch roof that says, "Doc Holliday" or Doc Chickaday" lol. You can put an old style jail with bars in the window and an old hotel, etc. I just think that would be too cool.

    Brook, they all face time! And most of my kids (6) did not want to spend the night away except with Grandma. I was the same, even married I did not like being away from home. I think that’s telling us they/we love their home💞

    Oh my gosh my dad used to have a black mission fig in our fruit orchard by our house and a green fig that was white on the inside. My dad and I used to stand under those fig trees when they were ripe and eat them until we couldn't eat anymore. My mom used to yell out the back door at us, you two are going to be sick. Love those figs especially the black ones.

    Jason, it the National Turkey Federation. The auction can get crazy, when so of the people try to out bid their spouse ex. I go because the funds are for our wild life and food good. Jason, I'm nearsighted and I can wear my glasses to read.
