  • Leonardo da Vinci - The Great Procrastinator Who Changed The World
    Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci considered himself a loser?
    Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most gifted and inventive men in history, a mathematician, engineer, sculptor, scientist, and one of the best painters of all time. His "Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa" are one the most popular and influential masterpieces. He was a genius who born out of curiosity and unlimited desire for knowledge. His notebooks reveal that he was centuries ahead of his time.
    His inventions, journals, ideas - changed the world. Many people don't know that Leonardo da Vinci struggled most of his life. Can you Believe that He considered himself a loser, someone who had failed in life. Like me and you he faced rejection, failure and self doubt.
    This is the success story of Leonardo da Vinci, the great procrastinator who changed the world.
    The interesting thing is, Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the most gifted and inventive men in history never had any kind of formal education, no degree in any field. At the age of 15 Leonardo Da Vinci became a trainee under the famous sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio.
    But Leonardo da Vinci became known for being unable to finish a task. As a freelancer, that is not a good quality.
    He became famous for missing deadlines and not finishing the job. And that was not good for business. So now, no one would hire him. And He just hits 30!
    Many Years passed before the genius of Leonardo da Vinci was noticed. Today he is known as one of the best painters of all time. But did you know that He was 46 when he completed 'The Last Supper'.
    Despite excelling in everything from science to sculpture to painting he considered himself a failure, a disappointment.
    He had so many interests, But spent too much time planning projects and procrastinated on actually finishing his projects.

    I just turned 27, I have a bachelor's degree but I still haven't found a good job. In my life I've been diagnosed with ADD, OCD, chronic depression, mild aspergers, gender dysphoria, & sleep insomnia. Most of my past attempts at relationships have been complete failures and then this year I fell in love with someone who I can't be with because our age difference is too significant so we had to break it off and I'm still really sad that the one time I actually meet someone really nice who probably wanted a committed relationship with me and ofc we can't be together because of something outside of our control like our ages. Before watching this video I was thinking the same thing that I'm a loser and a failure in life and I might as well be dead. Finding out that a great mind in history like Leonardo da Vinci understood my struggles and wasn't successful until so late in his life is probably just the thing I needed to hear right now.

    Also letting go and just getting shit done that needs to get done no matter how poor the execution is something I have to adopt and it was touched on so straightforwardly in this video. Big Up ✊🙏

      What helps me is to realize that even though I'm interested in a lot of things I can still narrow it down if I had to. So if you like baseball, but you also like cooking, and you had to chose only one and you lose the other you'll find that one is more important to you, even if by the width of a hair. Then once you know what the most important thing is to you you can dedicate yourself to that craft, and get really good at it. It feels amazing to get good at something.

      super Severe ADHD sufferer here myself, and yes no matter what the brain craves and flies towards, incremental minimal changes in behaviors and thoughts complement each other will create a much bigger change, the timer technique or "Pomodoro" technique is great at helping one keep motivated for short spurts and be able to accomplish lot more than you initially thought you could. Best of luck my friend!

    • @J_a_k_e_
      @J_a_k_e_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raylax7056 Indeed. You should see my solution for that. I have close to a hundred different timers for mundane tasks that I set on my phone. I turn a timer for one on that I know needs doing, usually it's cooking related, and then I go and do another task that requires my immediate attention. The timer will go off for the previous task when it's time and remind me to turn my attention there. Don't know how many times this simple practice has saved me a lot of burnt dinners 🤣 Pomodoro is definitely effective. Thanks for the tip mate. Best of luck to you as well. 👍

      Please, pass your thesis. My university allowed us only 1 semester to pass the thesis. And here below was my journey of hell. Please. Do what they tell you. Don't be creative. Don't be perfectionistic. Make it very standard, basic. Each time, pick the very first article you find regarding a certain chapter. Does it answer the question of the chapter? Great. Next chapter. Don't look for anything more. If you fall in the trap of procrastination and perfectionism, it can get very very ugly.
      2017, semester 1, 3x different thesis proposals rejected.
      2017, semester 2: thesis #1 rejected. Resit 2 months later, also rejected.
      2018, semester 2: thesis #2 rejected. Resit denied because it was ''too bad''.
      Examination board rules that I did not receive feedback on time on several occasions. Extension given, resit allowed after all.
      2019, semester 1: thesis #2 resit rejected.
      Disagreement supervisor (want to approve thesis) & assessor (want to reject thesis) so third opinion has to decide: rejected.
      2019, semester 2: forced to take a break due to severe depression, anxiety. completely ruined psychologically. can't function properly. almost losing my mind. didn't seek help.
      2020, semester 1: thesis #3 accepted. Graduated. Still experiencing severe anxiety and depression after graduation. Discovered I have ADHD.
      2021, second half, finally things are feeling better.

      An advice on procrastination that follows below was not written by me but by someone else. I put it here for you as it may help you as it did for me:
      'Procrastination is often linked to a desire for perfection. Anxiety arises from fear of missing it. It can be crippling and a walk or doing a less intimidating drawing exercise can break the pattern, as long as you come back to whatever you were procrastinating (or you’ll train yourself to keep avoiding similar situations!). Break it down into manageable chunks, and don’t think too far ahead. Also tell yourself that no one and nothing is truly perfect and doing the best you can is always better than doing nothing. '

He didn't influence science or technology very much because he never publishes his work, and he didn't influence art as much because he only did less than 20 paintings in his lifetime (for comparison, Van Gogh painted 900 paintings in the last few years of his life).

    He was known as a procrastinator during his lifetime and mocked for it to his face allegedly by Michelango (in regards to the incomplete horse sculpture) so this is not conjecture. He accomplished wondrous things during this lifetime in various fields, including mapping, river diversions, painting etc., that made him a coveted, paid advisor to various kings and heads of state, but was also famous for some notorious failures. The Last Supper was painted with a faulty technique that made it deteriorate immediately after completion, for example.

With all his amazing work, he did compensate for the lack of feeling enough. All the great procrastinate. Even Elon Musk. When he said he is working like crazy hours... Yes he did, but believe me, he accounted thinking into that because the nature of his job is to decide what is the right thing to do... While growing up, i had a tendency to take my time and work slowly, it felt more natural as i was working to go at a slow pace, and let my inspiration drive what i do. Our society does not like that. I began to procrastinate to force myself to complete work in a short amount of time. I am now extremely fast and efficient in what i do. I think the obsession with speed and efficiency discourages some great works from happening. You can't let the art happen naturally, like a meditation. There's no time to wait for inspiration to strike.

    I really doubt that he was "just procrastinating and worrying" like the video suggests.
    How was he procrastinating? He did exactly what the video suggested as a solution. He made plans for great projects and broke them down into countless small steps, which he also followed: he did tons of research, learned new skills for his projects, practised them, made imperfect sketches, kept working on them, improved them over and over again and so on...
    He didn't just "sit around doing nothing", he didn't just "worry about his tasks", he did a lot of work, most of it was preparation for the project, but that's what all creative work is - over 90% of the work is skillpractise, brainstorming ideas and preparationwork, that most people ignore or even dismiss when the final project doesn't get finished.
    Even "normal" jobs consist mostly of learning specific skills, practise, preparation, thinking and planning, even housechores. Cooking a simple meal consists of brainstorming ideas what to cook, buying ingredients, preparing dishes and tools, a lot of cleaning all kinds of stuff before and after, mixing stuff together and learning all kinds of specific skills before that, then practising them and improving all the time... When you add everything up, the same conclusion stands - most of the time and work going into a meal is invisible to someone who just wants to eat something, and I'm not even counting factors like collecting cooking utensils, building kitchens and other cooking areas, growing the food and all the preparations and maintanance going into that... The final effect is just a fraction of all energy put into something.
    What if someone goes through all the steps and the food gets burned in the end? All the work, no meal to show for it. Would anyone call that procrastinating or worrying?
    The difference between cooking and working on novel, revolutionary projects is just, that most people understand cooking and help eachother with many steps to bring about the final effect quicker and easier. We are forgetting to count in the work of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, farmers, sellers and so on, into preparation time for our meal. Many artists and and groundbreaking engineers, on the other hand, do most of the steps in a project on their own, because the time they would have to spend on explaining their project to people who are unable or unwilling to undertsand the details (or even the main concept sometimes), they could just spend imrpoving and testing their project. It's actually logical and more efficient to limit the amount of participators in some projects, but the downside of that is, that people who don't know what happens behind the curtain, will judge the time between putting an order and the final result, as idle work or lost time..

But I don't have that time and reincarnation isn't real, so I'll just have to make my mistakes and learn as I go on. Which makes my brain want to turn and spin, but as this video states time isn't on my side.

    It doesn't sound like he procrastinated. It sounds like he just worked a lot and was dedicated to perfecting his knowledge and craft. In other words, he was more interested in the work for its own sake rather than satisfying his patron's desires.

    When i hear about genius’s who ‘suffer’ from ADHD, i wonder, would they be a Genius without the ‘suffering’?
    I believe suffering is necessary part of human expression…without it, we are just not relatable to anyone.

    • @N0noy1989
      @N0noy1989 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably the case. Some with ADHD can go into hyper fixation mode. That thing where he studies horses for years is probably a sign of it. A genius with hyper fixation is like a bodybuilder juiced to the gills with roids. As a "side effect" though, he only completed a few works. But those works are worth millions now. And even his uncompleted works are worth millions.

    • @wilhelmvg9978
      @wilhelmvg9978 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@N0noy1989 nah anyone can go into hyper fixation. ADHD is a disability and in the 100+ years that it’s been documented and studied, there is not a single benefit that ADHD people have been shown to have over a control group.

    According to Gretchen Rubin's 4 tendencies it's very likely Da Vinci was a rebel personality. They have difficulties to fulfil not only outer expectations, but also inner expectations. That's one of the most common reasons for procrastinating regarding for example a freelance job (= outer expectations) or private projects he was interested in and he wanted to finish for himself (= inner expectations). Rebels reject both!

THE PROCESS will cause procrastinator. Even working a car I know that I am going to have issues with a certain part or bolts.

    It is not procrastination, people this day use this word whenever they see someone laying or staying still which in reality people tend to take time off to think about things further and it isn't necessarily wasting time. it is a part of the whole process of creating something unique.
