- WCW/nWo Thunder... Are we dealing with what is undoubtedly one of the worst wrestling video games of all time, here? Yes, yes we are. Thunder, to this day, carries that reputation, and with good reason. It sucks! But the most memorable thing about Thunder, though, isn't the awful gameplay. No, the most memorable piece of the Thunder puzzle... Are the promos. See, each and every wrestler on the character select screen has a built in promo that they cut on the player. With one press of a button, you can listen to Sting, Bret Hart, Scott Hall, Diamond Dallas Page and more tell you why you should (or shouldn't) pick them for you match. Here today on 616Nitro, we're going to rate each promo out of 10. Let's get to it!

Oh man, the promos of this game and Nitro are the stuff of legends! Really reminds you of better times when almost everyone in wrestling was filled with charisma and energy, whether that be WCW, WWF, or ECW.

The Giant at 7ft 4in tall and 540 lbs gets a 1/10 for accuracy. Also Kidman's "Flock" character was clearly a drug addict and the "7 year itch" is a term referring to the struggle of staying sober.

My theory is they recorded some of the “heels” to be cutscenes/FMV’s for a deleted game mode. I don’t think Scott Hall misunderstood the assignment, I think he nailed it. The programmers just copied what they had out of context to his character select screen.
Some of the wrestlers that were in Nitro like Hall probably recorded multiple promos, the programmers went the lazy route on guys like Hall & Alex Wright using the outtakes from Nitro. They are wearing the same attires in both games for these promos
It's fun theory but it's not true. I know one of the devs of this game. They just offered the wrestlers zero direction.

This was when Steiner first turned, they were calling him Superstar Scott Steiner for like 2 weeks.
DDP's promo was a jab at D'von and Bubba Dudley too. At that time, 1998, D'von was using the whole jacked deal in his ring entrance, and Bubba would say "when you get JACKED up 7 feet in the air, and I CUT you, you'll be seeing 3-D." again, this was around the time they established the 3D as THE finish.
I've never heard anyone connect DDP's phrasing to the Dudleyz before, interesting.
Sting gets a 1 IMO. He clearly couldn't be assed to cut a promo and didn't even use the right name for his finisher. I did pop for your tan comment tho.
Raven's was always my favorite.
Also I bet Ultimo wore different gear because the blue/green from his portrait didn't work well with the green screen. Or because the black didn't look that great, they imported a different picture for his portrait.

Man I forgot how much I played that game when it first came out. I was a big NWO fan so I pretty much only ever played as NWO members. I will admit with the promos Piper and Page probably had the best. Seemed like a lot of the fromer WWE guys kept using their promos from there

Whenever I would watch all these top 10 worst wrestling video games this and Nitro showed up and I thought to myself, oh man the game cant be that bad can it? then when i bought it a few years ago then i was like ah now i see why but its one of those games its so bad its good. still working on getting backstage assault just for craps and giggles and others

*And second sidenote lol i believe the reason why the audio is not synced correctly is because ur playing the ps1 discs on the ps3 so its emulstion is only slightly delayed, but not too much to be a bother. I noticed it when playing resident evil on ps1 to ps3 some slight differences.

Roddy Piper: Yeah, now that's how you make a case for a player's arcade playthrough, you tell him you kicked the shit out of Nash and Hogan. Roddy was always the action movie man, he was great even when Duke Nukem kept stealing his lines.
Buff: Okay, fuck it, I'm so utterly a shameless fan of this promo for all the goofy rhymes. I use it on some of my game profiles.
Ultimo Dragon: I only recognized "zettai ni" from his promo, but I can tell he's got spirit and professionalism to spare. If anyone can translate, that'd be really helpful. I'd give it an 8 myself. remind me to watch more puroresu stuff.
Kidman: I felt his promo felt a bit obligatory, but a friend of mine once wrote on her twitter that she didn't realize Kidman's whole scratching thing was akin to drug addiction, she just thought he had a really itchy shirt.
Chris Kanyon: The rest of it is just there but MAN I just loved the way he rasped out "FLATLINED." RIP dude
Disciple: "When I put the Apocalypse...ANDDROPYOU!" Did Brutus forget his lines or something? The verbal equivalent of the time Hulk Hogan tried to throw a fireball at Ultimate Warrior.

He was in a contract legal dispute with WCW at the time he was also removed from WCW/nWo Revenge on the N64 too.
He was in Thunder, but you had to type in the "Unlock All Wrestlers" cheat code to play as him. He only had the green attire he wore in Nitro, so I'm assuming they just used his model from that game.
Lawsuit. He was hidden in the unlockables.

Any else think if Hulk saw the Might ratings he'd want WAY more green? I'm still a bit confused by what the ACTUALLY represented. Like the legs mean high flying? As Ultimo Dragon has green legs but then Goldberg has green legs? Why does Saturn have green legs? Kanyon has green arms and legs but grey body...what the fuck does it all mean? Also what does green head mean?! Smart? Good talker/promos? Or how thick it is? I serious DO NOT get it. Is it in the manual what they mean? Also there are SLIGHTLY reddish greys too on some people like Hollywood Hulk has a red head 👌🤣 Poor Alex Wright not only has all grey but his head and body are red.
