  • "The Piano Trio, Op. 8, is a composition in G minor by Frédéric Chopin, written in 1828 or 1829, and published in 1829, dedicated to Antoni Radziwiłł.
    The piece has established itself as a core member of the piano trio repertoire. In a letter to his friend Tytus Woyciechowski dated 31 August 1830, Chopin speculates whether he should have written the violin line for viola, believing that the viola's timbre would "accord better with the cello" Emanuel Ax is of the opinion that it is perhaps fortunate that Chopin scored the work for a standard piano trio, since so few trios with viola exist."

    Performed by the Beaux Arts Trio (Menahem Pressler, Piano; Isidore Cohen, Violin; Bernard Greenhouse, Cello)
    Allegro con fuoco - 00:05
    Scherzo vivace - 10:47
    Adagio sostenuto - 17:42
    Finale allegretto - 23:52

    To see this exemple of the style of early Chopin, it is incredible to note very significant characteristics of the classical period on it and especially how beethovenian this piece sounds on the whole, which was perhaps due to the fact that since this is a very early Chopin, he could still be uncertain on what style he would follow, or maybe it is because of the very traditional music genre that is synonymous with the classical period. Either way, this serves as a great testament to how Chopin was influenced by Beethoven, Mozart and many other of their contemporaries

    The first movement of the Trio is built in a similar way as its equivalents in Chopin's First Piano Sonata and First Piano Concerto: In all three pieces the exposition stays in the tonic and fails to build up tonal tension. This tension only is established in the recapitulation. It seems that Chopin had the idea to turn classical sonata procedures upside down. Donald Tovey called this "a suicidal plan". Chopin made a good decision when he gave up this manner in his later sonatas.

    • @mouf725
      @mouf725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ooh I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this! Yeah I found it a bit weird at first, it's obviously quite a departure from the standard sonata form that is so ingrained in our minds. However, to me it felt a little fresh and different, and it wasn't really that off-putting - I think because Chopin always maintains a great deal of interest in the music with his melodies and use of harmony.
      I wonder why Tovey made those comments - do you think it really is suicidal to try and change the standarf sonata form? To me that seems a little depressing if true...

      And the transition to the reprise (2:32) is so bizarre in its uselessness. Chopin had to find a tortuous way to go from g minor to g minor.

      The first piano concerto the tension is actually between the e minor - major that pervades the exposition. The g major recap of theme 2 is the relief to the original tension - the thing that actually acts to bring us home, since part of it is actually e minor. A great example of turning sonata form on its head. The other two examples dont give any tonal tension at all. Thats suicidal, like Tovey put it

      @@squirrel4727 Maybe the performers are using another edition of the score, which is not the one shown on the video? That could be the case, but I'm not sure. It makes sense though. Many performers in this era are very strict regarding the score, and they play everything on as written on the score. Changing anything in it is considered as a 'taboo', so my assumption is that they probably had another edition which showed them an 8th note instead of a 16th, and that is the reason why they play it as such.
