  • My first ride on the fully automatic treadmill by Tacx. I was super skeptical about the limitations/ride feel/practicality of riding on a treadmill, but after a minute I liked it... and after five minutes I want one. Remember to hit SUBSCRIBE to support this TH-cam channel: bit.ly/3aUph9W

    I love it that Tacx is so innovative and willing to take the risks with these kind of bold ideas. The Tacx Neo is already a good example of it, with it's near silent training and road feel. But this shows it even more. Huge respect for these kind of companies taking the risks and investing in these ideas.

      Is trying to make a trainer quiet and realistic a "bold idea"?

      No, it's an almost impossible task.

    Another benefit of this type of unit is real feel for steep climbing. You are fighting gravity, a resistance trainer only creates resistance to moving the pedal forward. Gravity is a force that pushes back against the pedal.

    I have been waiting so long for someone to come out with a consumer level version of one of these. I don't ride a bike just for the sake of pedaling so normal trainers really don't appeal to me, with this you actually get to ride your bike and your tires aren't being eaten by rollers! Awesome! Now I just have to wait another 5 to 10 years for the price to come down to my level.

    • @cibbicale1164
      @cibbicale1164 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      look up bike rollers. They are a mere fraction of the cost of this thing I'm sure. You ride your bike on rolling pins basically and its much safer than a moving belt that can burn you if you fall.

    I ran on one of these in Zwift running at a Zwift demo event in the UK last year. Was great fun as it was completely automated like on the bike - move forwards to go faster and back to slow. No need to press a button to slow up or down or use a foot pod to relay the treadmill pace to Zwift. Saw a few trying cycling on it as well but looked like some skill required but seems you got the hang of it quickly. However it is reputed to be about £7K so seems to be a high-end concept device. Also it has been "coming soon" for about a year but still no sign of a release date.

    In running treadmill mode does the Tacx Magnum work as a powered/“automatic” treadmill... or does it function as a “manual” treadmill where treadmill adds resistance, but runner moves treadmill with legs rather than motor spinning the treadmill?

    For a cheaper option get some floating bed rollers. You get exactly the same forward/back side to side movement, also mine have optional resistance. Full on standing sprints. Had mine years and can do proper interval sessions. Never going back to turbo training.

    5:55 you can think of this as a reverse electronic traction control on any car. Jerky movements is really only jerky from the rider's perspective. From the viewpoint of the electronics, we are all in super slow motion. they can easily evaluate the situation at 1000hz and even higher with no problem.

    I have a treadmill and recall that when i bought it the motor size was a key to longevity. My treadmill hits 20kph which is fairly high end but this must incline significantly at 30kph top speed for a 1500 watt all out sprints. What is the size of the motor to sustain that level of training over years?

      You need to know when the laser pointing mouse first became a thing, everyone believed it was overpriced and saw "no significant" benefit to use one instead of the good old mechanical one. However when you look again today, all mouses you could buy on the markets are laser based. So the point of this piece is not that it is for everyone, but to bring up something could be improved as time pass along. By then for sure the price is going to drop.

    I wonder how loud this would be at home though because if it is loud at home it would drive you crazy. They have it in a warehouse and it sounds loud. We are all so spoiled with how quiet the Neo and Neo2 are. I had the Kickr climb and Kickr 2018 sold it for Neo2 for the ease of use and noise levels.

    I was going to ask why these things haven't really made an impact - then I saw the price..... ouch. I mean it is cool, but they need to come down to under half that to be viable. Also, on a trainer you can bury yourself on an effort and not have to worry about stacking it, but I feel like the margin for error on this thing seems pretty low. What happens when you hit the sides?

  • @joshuafoster8976

    Yes it's expensive and it's not for those without a spare room to dedicate to training, but what a machine. Great to see hands on view of new tech cheers Shane. Only thing is full on sprint issues?? Is it responsive enough? filling out insurance claim for full on sprint "er while I wanted to win on zwift" "yes it's a game" "yes I crashed indoors"

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It has a front roller, but jumping for a maximal sprint would put your head through the TV screen for sure. The steady state and other sub maximal efforts on it were a lot better than I expected to be honest.

    • @gplama

    @886014 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, thanks Lama, very clever. Looks like a standard treadmill with some sensors to measure where the bike is.
    30 kph max speed though? Hmmm, you've got to wonder what the market is with that limitation, fine for simulating climbs, but that's about it.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll need more time on the unit to know how that 30km/h limitation works in regard to training. On the unit the other day it wasn't an issue. 30km/h up a 15% is hooking along nicely... that's assuming hill climbing is the training you're after.

    Seems like a futuristic bike roller. But with more noise and a much higher initial cost plus electricity. Screen would definitely distract me. I've stepped on the sides before running on a treadmill with a screen in front of me. Don't use those anymore :) I feel like the screen would distract me enough so the front wheel would hit the sides. Not sure what would happen if they did. I assume its been tested though

    • @doctorSpoc
      @doctorSpoc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No... because it functions like a “manual” treadmill where its the user (not the treadmill motor) that spins the treadmill.. the treadmill is mostly adding resistance.. maybe +/-2to3Watts here and there to keep you centred the unit or simulate coasting. if it was treadmill motor spinning the treadmill you wouldn’t be doing any work! Contrary to an “automatic”/powered treadmill, manual treadmills come quickly to a halt when you stop.. since YOU are the motor.. equivalent of turning off an automatic treadmill...

      That’s belt speed. Simulated speed can be anything. It’s watts that matter.

  • @MrHotpl4te
    @MrHotpl4te 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does the belt move because of the cyclist peddling and the belt keeps up with you, Or is the belt powered like a treadmill, and you have to keep up with it?
    I see the vertical incline is powered, just wondered about the belt

      It adjusts belt speed to keep you in the middle of the treadmill. So it's motor powered, and belt speed adjusts rapidly to match your bike wheel speed.

      The concept of indoor training is about training, not simulating sitting on the couch riding down hill all day! ;) Just joking. I didn't do any full course simulations like Zwift. The gradient at 0deg was just like rolling along a flat road. I'd need more time on it to test everything. Maybe if I get to do a full 'Unbox, Building, Second Ride' video I'll cover this.

      Yep. Specs/details: magnum.tacx.com/ It'll be similar to the Neo for power (at a guess). I didn't grill them for the teardown.. that'll come later on. Or at Eurobike when I have a list of questions for them. :)

    • @elidouek5438
      @elidouek5438 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tacx would've had to really work outside the box to integrate a power meter. I can't really understand how they can make an accurate power meter when there is so much drag in the system from the weight of the bike and rider causing friction between the belt and the baseplate...

    I love cycling and I live in Scotland. I struggle to cycle all year round but it is doable. I find that the waste that all these machines generate is significant. How long will that engine last? 4-5 year at best? It is scary how sports are becoming focused on extra gadgets and this one is a very large one. Btw, this is no criticism to Shane Miller. If you weren't going for that roller sensation and just wanted the gradient change Tacx could make a front trainer block that moves with the incline/bounces you on the cobbles.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They'd need to move the rear or redesign the rear skewer/clamp. Any up and down movement on the front will grind away rear dropouts.

    Nice review. I think Tacx are reaching here as the units footprint is overly large for home and for pro teams who have limited space in the mechanics trailer. So I don't really know who this is marketed for? I don't see this being a big seller at all and I think in years to come will be discontinued.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a premium product. I don't see it being carted around by pro teams as a replacement for a set of rollers or a basic trainer to warm up on. RE: Space. Much like a caravan, or a boat, people find space for things they'll use. It's the progress I applaud here. If we didn't embrace change and progress, we'd still be riding horses.

      There's a lot more going on under the hood here in regards to automatic speed regulation and safety. The motors stop almost instantly when you drift back too far the unit. And Gumtree is how you get murdered! (kidding... but damn I've had some shoddy dealings via GT!).
