I had a friend whose mom worked in japan as a factory worker. Sadly her mom was one of the victims on that fateful day. Tragic for her that she cried during our interview. Still traumatized to see photos of her mom after that tsunami. They barely recognize her. But she is thankful because her mom's company gave assistance to her family. . Yet,no amount of money could replace the lives lost on that fateful day. Kudos for japan for the haste recovery.
I'v watched hours of video on tsunami in Japan and this video is the best. Wave velocity, close up encounter, sound, and all around impact including a man luck to survive being washed away in the torrent of water, and lets not forget to mention the residential fires with nighttime coverage. Absolutely amazing. Nothing the Japanese people cant handle, they are strong and valiente people
Every time I see this Tsunami I am just completely taken over as I try to imagine being there through these videos. I tremble to think of the amazing people and spirits who lost their lives. It’s disheartening and terrifying. I can’t say enough how sorry I am for these people. I hope you have a piece of your lives back since that time.
Does anyone know who took the video or the city where it was taken? I wonder if there are any videos showing the city today. Maybe some interviews with the people who survived the tsunami.
I really feel for the Japanese. Having to put up with serious uncontrollable forces of nature like this, and all they can do is stand and watch, as it destroys belongings, properties, and worst of all, takes loved ones. Their bravery and strength to push through this, is admirable. It's horrible to think that they put time, money and effort into restoring their homes, and other surrounding areas, only for it to be swallowed up again, which sends them back to square one! Respect to you, the people of Japan. My condolences goes out to all the people who lost family and friends to this.
I remember seeing this happen on live TV from Juneau, Alaska. We had a brief tsunami alert as a local broadcast right in the middle of the news footage. I was 17 and in love with everything about Japan. Well, until this. Now I mourn and weep for this sweet nation of wonderful people. I still cry sometimes. This was so hard to watch. And then they had the Fukushima disaster right after. How much can one nation suffer? Well, here is the answer. I pray the missing are found and that those lost forever are at peace. I am FASCINATED by these videos. Just entranced everytime I watch them and cant help myself to think about all the people we see and hear in the videos that didn't make it. We are witnessing some of these peoples last moments and dont even realize it.
Some friends and I were on the beach on the Columbia River in portland when 2 large cargo ships past each other . Soon the water reseaded and our boat was on dry land then wave after wave crashed against our boat and the shore . It was scary but nothing like this .
Yeah that right. In Indonesia, there was a tsunami happened after 3-5 minutes of the earthquake. People were underestimate it first, they thought the tsunami mostly come after up 20 minutes.
Plus you cant win with the water....God BLESS them all who passed away in this terrible horrible act of mother nature ..so very sad as they arent ever going to be able to Fix the water problem at the plant tho. They are now making ice holes to hold the radioactive water in !! I hope they work but if the electric goes off what happens to the water than ..the BBC had alot of interesting articles about this the other day ..I just hope it doesn't happen again to Japan..

Wow - first video I've seen in 10 years of not just the initial destruction but the eerie aftermath too - everyone still trapped together in random buildings, freezing cold, fires... after all the footage I've seen all this time I still can't imagine what it was like for those people to live through something like this. Rest in peace to all those who didn't make it.

It's easy in hindsight, but the Japanese are used to tsunamis and their warnings. NOTHING to the degree of this one, but they didn't know that until it was too late in some cases. It's The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf. It's why people live on/around volcanoes, live on a beach in the US East coast and in earthquake-prone zones. NOTHING big will ever happen to them until it does. @@truthchaser I'll give you the answers I've got. A few hours before the tsunami, there had been a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the 4th biggest one ever. Japan is prone to earthquakes and japanese people are highly prepared for this kind of disasters. The population were alerted a few minutes before the earthquake through alarms in their phones, tv, etc. That's why they knew about what was going to happen. About drones, it wasn't something popular at all between common people at 2011. I guess he had in mind that safe place beforehand. Sadly, not everyone had enough time to save their lives and around 20,000 people died.
You'd be surpised how calm you'll be. We fear and be nervous of things until we are in them. Just like someone is always very nervous before sky diving vs being calm after jumping
To me what really makes it so scary is how it just doesn't stop. I mean an earthquake might last for a few minutes... but this? It just keeps going and going.
That's because your point of view and the point of view of the people living there are different. Public broadcasting is for all the residents living there who have to flee from disasters.
I can hear that "the siren from Kesennuma city"(Miyagi Prefecture). and the building in front of him is probably Kesennuma Minami Elementary School. According to Wikipedia, it is said that the most damaged elementary school and it was closed in 2012. I'm live in the south of japan, so i cannot be sure.
And also nuclear meltdown that followed this devastation is still on-going...The people of Fukushima are suffering from cancer and other illnesses caused by massive radioactivity in this region. It would be nearly impossible to cleanup the radioactive mess just like Chernobyl.
Before watching this I though I was not the panic type, but I now have to admit I most definitely would have panicked if I was on that balcony- those people seemed so calm hope they made it ok
The frightening thing is this could happen to any country situated near the ocean along a continental plate . There have been many tsunamis of this magnitude over many millennia. Its just that this one in 2011 and the 2002 boxing day tsunami were recorded on modern technology that that has only been around 20 - 25 years. It could happen to any country situated near a subduction event of any tectonic plate making up the the Pacific ring of fire or the Indian and Burma tectonic plates as well as others. If you live anywhere near the coast in these parts of the world .....best be ready people. it could happen at any time. Very scary.

The most surreal part for me....watching the massive amount of debris coming out of nowhere...houses, large boats, cars...you name it. Horrific and fascinating at the same time....and then when the water retreats and leaves behind the terrible trail of destruction and debris, it's almost as if it's mocking everyone by saying, "I was here, but I'm leaving now, see you later, bye."

あれは何だろう白いの駆け上がって行ったけど
私はここに映ってる南気仙沼小学校の当時2年生でした。地震発生時は集団下校をしていてものすごく大きくて長い横揺れでした。目の前に止まっている車も激しく動いていたのを鮮明に覚えています。まだ学校を出てから数分でしたので学校の方を振り返ると私の担任がしゃがんでと合図していました。揺れが収まると、メガホンで学校に戻ってくるように言われ、みんなですぐに校庭に集まりました。その後校舎の3階に逃げて親の迎えを待ちました。周りの友達が迎えに来る中、私はいつなのか少し心配でしたが、母が迎えに来ました。その後保育園にいる妹も迎えに行きました。
どこに避難するか母が車で市内を回ると、市内が津波に飲み込まれていました。結局その日は高地にある小学校に避難しました。1週間ほどそこで生活しました。3人で一日におにぎり2個くらい配られた気がします。あとは結構歩いて自分たちで買いに行ってました。周りの方から貰うこともありました。本当に協力的な人ばかりでありがたかったと思いました。
あの当時、家に既に帰っていたら8歳の私は1人でどうなっていたんだろうかと怖くなります。2階建てのアパートに住んでいましたが、下の階は完全に水没していて2階は床下浸水でした。
自分が生まれ育った街がこんな風になるなんて悲しいです。この小学校も無くなり、避難所生活以降、友達の誰一人とも会えていません。
この春進学で上京しますが首都直下地震がとても不安です。
てことは今は18歳？高校生？
友達の誰1人とも会えてないんですか？本当に悲しいですね。

南小6年間の最高の思い出が。

自分は東京都小平市の出身・在住で、1987年の「千葉県東方沖地震」を経験していますが、この年は国分寺市立第一小学校に在学し、校舎四階に学年の教室が有りまして、同級生の女子の一人が「四階は揺れるなあ」と言っていました。
内陸かつ標高が40メートル位ですので、津波の影響は有りませんでした。
映像の当日は市原市でも「コスモ石油」の油槽施設が火災となり、衝撃でした。
亡くなられた方は都内だけでも７人のみで、江戸川区でのトルエンの吸引、千代田区の九段会館での天井崩落の下敷き、町田市の「コストコ」での駐車場スロープの崩壊、多摩市のマンションでの階段からの転落で、津波によるものは有りませんでした。

私は九州に住んでて、目の前は海です。よく海で遊んでいました。
当時小学生、幼かった私は「どうせ水じゃん…あんなの浮かんでたら助かるよ…流された人も助かってるよきっと」なんて馬鹿な事思ってましたが、水の力、勢いは恐ろしい。
しばらくして多くの死者、行方不明が出て「津波は助からないんだ…浮かばないんだ」と知る事になりました。
あれから10年…20歳を過ぎ、子どもを育てる親となりました。
もし自分が住んでいる地域で津波が起こっても正しい知識で逃げれるよう、また津波の恐ろしさを忘れないようにしていきたいです。

宮城県の内陸部で被災したので津波の被害はありませんでしたが、仕事中に乗っていた、1トンの荷物を積んだ車重8トンの重機が左右に揺られてタイヤが浮きました。
住宅の倒壊は免れましたが、ヒビ等のダメージはかなりありました。
沿岸部に住み漁師をしていた親戚からは、車で避難をする方々で道路は渋滞し、逆走、衝突、人身事故が発生していたとのこと。
また、当時は季節的にまだ降雪があるような気温のため、避難の際に海水で濡れ、そのまま避難せざるを得ない方々の中には寒さで一夜を越せずに凍死してしまった方もいました。
今後、どこで大地震、大津波が発生するかは分かりませんが、とにかく用心をし、できる限り早く避難した方が良いです。

It's easy in hindsight, but the Japanese are used to tsunamis and their warnings. NOTHING to the degree of this one, but they didn't know that until it was too late in some cases. It's The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf. It's why people live on/around volcanoes, live on a beach in the US East coast and in earthquake-prone zones. NOTHING big will ever happen to them until it does. However, I DO agree with you. Want to yell at them, but...

It's easy to think all people of the world think like us, but in reality most don't. They do their own thing through cultural evolution. It makes sense to them even though science has told them it's not the smartest move.

@@truthchaser he started filming when it was already starting - the water retreating is a sign of an incoming tsunami even if they hadn't already known it was coming

A few hours before the tsunami, there had been a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the 4th biggest one ever.
Japan is prone to earthquakes and japanese people are highly prepared for this kind of disasters.
The population were alerted a few minutes before the earthquake through alarms in their phones, tv, etc. That's why they knew about what was going to happen.
About drones, it wasn't something popular at all between common people at 2011. I guess he had in mind that safe place beforehand.
Sadly, not everyone had enough time to save their lives and around 20,000 people died.

You'd be surpised how calm you'll be. We fear and be nervous of things until we are in them. Just like someone is always very nervous before sky diving vs being calm after jumping

@@63hakaider20 まぁ誰も予測できなかった。岩手の山田町にいたんだけど、津波を初めて見た時は、目がおかしくなったのかとおもった。20メートルは軽くあったと思う。あぁ、俺も死んだなと思ってたらすぐに足元まで水が来て、しらないおじさんにはやく逃げねばなんねんだぞ！って言われて初めて逃げようと思った。 目の前で人は流されていくし、近所のおばさんは水門を締めに行ったまま帰って来なかった。

I can hear that "the siren from Kesennuma city"(Miyagi Prefecture). and the building in front of him is probably Kesennuma Minami Elementary School. According to Wikipedia, it is said that the most damaged elementary school and it was closed in 2012.
I'm live in the south of japan, so i cannot be sure.

そりゃ認識しない人はいるけど、津波自体の認識が変わった人が多いって話ですよ。
特に経済大国で技術もある日本でコレが起きた事と、鮮明に多角的に映像が残った事はかなり大きな認識の違いだよ。
ただ、人は正常化バイアスと言えば良いのか、恐ろしいものを現実の脅威として認識したがらないとこがあるからね。
『思ったより怖いみたいだから、南海トラフ地震来たら終わるじゃん』位で思考停止してると多いと思う。
だから、分かりやすくまずは地域の防災マップ等を見るとこからですよって話。
一人でも見といて良かった人が増えれば良いよね。

Worst catastrophe of this century...so far! Fukushima/Tsunami.
And also nuclear meltdown that followed this devastation is still on-going...The people of Fukushima are suffering from cancer and other illnesses caused by massive radioactivity in this region.
It would be nearly impossible to cleanup the radioactive mess just like Chernobyl.

The frightening thing is this could happen to any country situated near the ocean along a continental plate . There have been many tsunamis of this magnitude over many millennia. Its just that this one in 2011 and the 2002 boxing day tsunami were recorded on modern technology that that has only been around 20 - 25 years. It could happen to any country situated near a subduction event of any tectonic plate making up the the Pacific ring of fire or the Indian and Burma tectonic plates as well as others. If you live anywhere near the coast in these parts of the world .....best be ready people. it could happen at any time. Very scary.

The most surreal part for me....watching the massive amount of debris coming out of nowhere...houses, large boats, cars...you name it. Horrific and fascinating at the same time....and then when the water retreats and leaves behind the terrible trail of destruction and debris, it's almost as if it's mocking everyone by saying, "I was here, but I'm leaving now, see you later, bye."
At 3.31 when the 1st wave reached the small boats, people should have known that the tsunami was not joking around his time round.
