Hey folks! Welcome Michael Cripe to our 3 Minute Reviews team! Michael has been writing news, interviews and op-eds for The Escapist for the past three years and is now making the transition to the video side to work on some 3 Minute Reviews as well. Enjoy his first one on Amnesia: The Bunker!
I love how Frictional learned from Rebirth's criticism and evolved the tired old hide and seek simulator formula to deliver something a little different. Hopefully they stick to this approach with their next game, I'd love to see a more survival horror RE-inspired take on Soma.
@@duongtran642 The common ones are: - Not scary (as TDD) - Protagonist talks too much Didn't personally have a problem with either. Not as spooky, but still found it had some great atmosphere. SOMA hit me way harder. Found the ending.. well the one I got, of Rebirth to be a bit underwhelming.
"Random Documents and Audio Logs; We find them stuck to notice boards, we find them under dogs; We're going to put them in a file and give it a review; And we're bored of all the gameplay, but we've nothing else to do." -Yahtzee Crenshaw
This is the right balance of horror: A complete stealth focus (Outlast and previous Amnesia games) - Tends to become tedious ones you stop finding the roaming monsters scary and instead view them as obnoxious obstacles that prevent you from exploring and going forward. An action focus, on the other hand (RE 4 and Dead Space) - Tends to leave you with too much ammo (because directly confronting the monsters is mandatory) that at some point it's starting to feel more like a power fantasy than a horror. A balance of these 2 is what a proper horror game should strive for!
You worded it perfectly, I started this game up last night with some friends watching and being a big fan of both the stealth horror, and the action-survival horror types of games, this one just did it all perfectly. I am a heavyweight when it comes to horror games, jumpscares and stuff are cheap at this point and I simply do not get surprised or scared playing these types of games anymore, but the start of Amnesia Bunker had me (rightfully) shitting myself. The first time I head the creature in the walls or above me make a sound, I jumped out of my chair, the sound design alone is one of the most horrific things I have heard in gaming in a long time. The design of the creature itself isn't all that scary to be fair, when it first started chasing me I was like "oh shit, it kinda looks like a dog" but before that, the game never showed the creature, it was always just out of sight, but still present enough to be a constant threat, trying to leap out of the holes in the bunker. The sound that the thing gave off made my heart fall into my ass though, it sounds like a creature almost trying to mimic a human voice without the same vocal cords if that makes sense. The first time I heard it, it sounded like somebody calling to me and with the surround sound headphone, the game didn't even need some stupid linear scripted jumpscare, it was that alone that startled the hell out of me.
I love The Bunker because this time around, I'm actually playing the game, making interesting decisions regarding what I want to do, where to go, and how to get there instead of being shuttled linearly through the game. This is certainly the best horror game I've played in a very long time!
Congratulations on such a good first video! I really enjoyed all the points and the overall structure of the review. I think that the speaking speed could be just a bit slower but I guess that is the cost of squeezing so much information into 3 minutes. I am looking forward to more reviews from Michael.
I think the noisy flashlight mechanic is actually a really cool substitute for the sanity system in TDD. At the very least it's an interesting idea that they can develop in future games. Hopefully they keep innovating in the future. I'd love to see a sort of combination of this game's design philosophy and TDD's.
2:48 I rather take a good 5-6 hour game than whatever Amnesia Rebirth was. A bloated game with too many flashbacks and constant talking. I feel that The Bunker is going to be the best Amnesia game just because how much it focuses on gameplay and replayability.
Omg for real! I loved how the puzzles in thoses ones, and the bunker never felt like they were holding your hand. Made for some very satisfying moments that made me feel smart lol
@@todeskult2818 haha I was joking that when I saw the trailer but we actually gather couple of dozens for the revolver and maybe one full mag for the shotgun
It is so SO fucking good so far, easily one of the greatest horror games I have played in a while and I only just started, it takes the amnesia formula and throws in elements of Alien: Isolation and the new Resident Evil games with some of the most horrifying mechanics, sound design, and atmosphere. The game just does horror so well, it makes you feel helpless and constantly stressed, I am a horror gaming vet and even I had to take breaks because it had my sweating. The only downside is the monster design (at least the first one, not sure if their is more later down the line) is actually..not all that horrifying. It's presence is made so much scarier by its sound when it is off screen or in the darkness, but the design when it is spawned in and actively hunting was actually the least frightening thing about it. Might just be me but it looks too much like a fucked up dog lol, I saw it once and my first thought was "oh shit, its not all that bad" even as it was actively chasing me down, idk I am a big animal person so even a horrific monster loses a lot of that fear factor if it looks too much like an animal. Overall a masterpiece of a game so far, I can't wait to see mods and custom stories too.
@@upsidedownpyramid7617I am stuck in the bunker trying to get to the arsenal. I've already spent 2 play sessions wondering around aimlessly trying to figure out how to proceed. If I have to spend over 2 hours in total to come close to advancing to the next area that takes all the fun away. I don't play video games to play chores. Sorry just venting, I'm mad because I was wanting to enjoy this game, if I have to look up multiple tutorials I just feel like deleting the game all together
@@harmondraws Truthfully, getting the lighter and wrench were the only things I needed to look up. Where you are currently at is slightly confusing I admit, but I would recommend fully reading through the notes marked as missions and paying attention to the surroundings. With Arsenal, you need a code to get in, which is only broadcasted through the communications room in Soldier's Quarters. The two large rooms, one of which has rats, in that section will have a key somewhere that allows you access to Comms. From there you need to turn on all the power switches, requiring you to trek from the main area into the door that leads from the barracks area down into the mess hall and pantry. After turning on power and unlocking comms you will be able to turn on the radio which will broadcast a code to enter Arsenal. If you search everything most of the game is linear enough to not miss stuff but when you are around this point in the game the map expands a lot and leads to a lot of wandering, which isn't easy, especially for me on hard mode with the monster hunting every few minutes. Amnesia has always been a puzzle horror type of game and Bunker ups the ante a lot. If you don't want to feel stressed playing a game, I don't think Amnesia: Bunker is the best pick for you lol. I am a long time horror vet, I don't react to jump scares, everything is played out for me, but this game was so good even I was shitting my pants and sweating during the beginning of my playthrough until I learned the monsters patterns and stuff. This game was my introduction to the series. Feels a lot like re 2/village eight e puzzles and combos.. I’m playing on easy but still die from the monster lol
I wanted to try it out since some reviewers I watched were giving it solid scores. The game can be scary with some intense moments, great design on the monster, and audio-wise it's super immersive. The graphics look good although a bit outdated I think opening the doors by pulling out was a bit clumsy and some environmental objects would get in the way but I guess they were going for more of a riveting experience. Fantastic game, just not my cup of tea. This is a must for survival horror fans. 8/10
I've been a fan of Amnesia since the beginning and switching it up with a sandbox element sounds cool, but I think I'm going to wait for a sale. 25$ for a 5-8 hour game with replayability that is switching up locker combinations and the placement of a few items sounds a bit steep to me. I'll be picking it up during a sale.
Am I the only one who didnt like this one very much? The monster after the forst section felt very dumb and progressing via alerting just felt tidious. Every time it was the same bland encounter
the game’s 4 hours long at *best* with an egregiously annoying gameplay loop that involves running to and from your Safe Room dying over and over from one hit kills because trial and error is basically 50% of what you’ll be doing the entire time and AI that will hunt you down ruthlessly and break the laws of physics, teleporting through walls, traps, doors, anything that you left behind in an attempt to slow down it’s chase because the game does *not* reward you for quick thinking or strategy but punishes you instead for wasting your time using your brain and not just running brainlessly back to the safe room for the 100th time like it seems to encourage seeing that the monster’s AI will find you no matter what you do or where you hide turning it from a terrifying heart thumping encounter to a downright annoyance whenever you see or hear him in any way, shape, or form making this game probably the *Least* “scary” amnesia game I’ve played so far. Save your money.
Agreed. One time I heard the monster coming so I hid in a closet. I was crouched, I had my light off, not moving, nothing at all. It still decided to look inside the closet, glitching through it at first. It opened the closet and fired off a shot of the revolver. It didn't run away, it just stood there unmoved. So I kept shooting one bullet after the other to see if it eventually took off running. After all 4 of my bullets were gone, it ran away and the next room was locked with a padlock. Basically the game was telling me that I shouldn't try my very best to survive, or that one shot at close range to the face would scare it off. Instead I should just accept that I wasn't hiding well enough and the best course of action would be to run away like a lunatic into the darkness - not that it would matter because there's holes everywhere it come out of at any time - and I should just willingly get killed to start over instead of trying to survive. It's still a good game but it's a little disingenuous how much praise this game is getting when it's nowhere near any better than The Dark Descent.
@@jamesdempsey4194 Yeah, I mean don’t get me wrong- I beat the game, played the whole thing and tried my best to enjoy what I could but it just became so frustrating so quickly. It’s an okay survival horror, but there are much better out there right now IMO.

Nice review as always but with a playing time of 5-6 hours it's slightly longer than (Justine and) A Machine for Pigs, isn't it?
Justine is maybe an hour 1st playthrough. AMFP was around 4 hours? That was really a waking sim with a decent story.
