Bangkok Slum - alone with no tour guide.

- This was a completely unplanned visit into Bangkok's most well-known slum - Khlong Toei. It's located by the docks by the river on the southern side of Rama IV road.
I was near the area and I decided to wonder in and see what it's like. I'd never been before and I was told I should probably get a guide. I'm completely fluent in Thai and I always feel like going in groups is often more dangerous.
It turns out, they were all really nice and welcoming. That's not to say there aren't any problems.
I have walked through that area a couple times, never felt in any danger, always bumped into super friendly people (more friendly than people you bump into in Thonglor) Glad you made this, I was also getting annoyed with the recent youtubers filming and misunderstanding this place.
It’s a fascinating labyrinth of vendors, homes, and culture. The TH-camrs likely wanna have an “angle” or make it look like they were “brave enough to go in”. In fact, they’d even made me a bit worried about going in! Instead, I found a lot of really friendly people who were happy to say hi and have a chat.
The word "slum" in common people's minds is probably a dangerous place. A "slum" in Thailand is a place for homeless people to come together. However, these people are Thai people who receive the same welfare from the government as Thai people throughout the country. And I can confirm that the "slums" in Thailand are not dangerous.and Welcome all visitors
Wow, slum in Thailand looks not bad really.
yes it’s a slum but the people that live there still take pride and keep it clean to the best of their abilities
Slum klongtoey is quite safe. They are not really that poor. Some houses even got air condition and TV. Downtown San Francisco is much worse.
Even those dogs smile back at you 😂
they are very friendly. different from what I thought.
One thing for sure that Thai people have good minds and you can speak Thai to them.
Welcome back. That was pretty decent. I don't care much about technical things. I liked what you came up with to say. You can think on your feet. And you treated your subjects humanely. Kudos. Gave it a like.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I've just re watched this video, great effort Mark, this is definitely the best tour video yours I've seen so far. Mate it's all about the people, it's great that you can use your Thai ability to really introduce us to people that, though financially poor, have a much richer life than many. One example would be the quality of their food etc. Please make more videos like this Mark, real people! 💯🙏🍻
Thanks mate. Hopefully I’ll find a way to get the time to make more videos 💪🏻
I have stumbled on your channel since coming back from thailand, i agree with your love for thailand, i love the culture, the food, i met some really great people. Thailand is an amazing place and bangkok cant really be described it has to been seen to understand it. Love the content. Keep it going please.
I thoroughly enjoyed that!
Thank you. Randomly went out yesterday with my camera and thought I’d see what คลองเตย was all about!
Great content Mark. If you could post videos more often and have them longer that would be epic. Greetings from London. 🍻
Working on it!
Most of them got a job like grandma said it look not like slums anymore. You speak thai like thai people good job.😊😊😊anyway that dog is not cheap .
Great video! Thanks so much for the tour of this slum. Your speaking abilities really elevate the quality of the conversations with the locals so much and you can tell that rapport and trust is developed (much more so than other TH-camrs who just speak English or use 👍🏼 as their main word). I plan to move to 🇹🇭 this year and aspire to speak as well as you! You just got a new subscriber 🙏
Doubtful that this was unplanned and you just happened to be nearby and have a camera and mics with you so you took a few hours to walk around. That obvious misdirection aside, one of the best videos like this I have seen. Poor camera work and edit aside, your ability to have honest and genuine interactions with the people in that area really make this shine, more than just you speaking thai, showing a genuine interest in the residents, having genuine interactions came across really well. There are dozens of videos like this, most probably in the same area, and this is the first one that took the time to showcase the people in a genuine fashion and not over dramatize the situation.
I appreciate the doubt, I’ll take as a compliment. I actually called a couple of friends and said we should make a video about it because I was nearby (it’s quite central Bangkok). I thought I’d walk in and make a quick impromptu video and then go back home to plan out a better video. After the guy with the chickens and the “yakuza” tattoo, I decided to actually post this video because those were really cool things that I didn’t think I’d see again on a second trip. I work in production so I often have my camera and mics with me. It’s a good camera and the mics work well (when I actually set them up right). Thanks for the kind words about the video. I’m definitely planning on making more like this as it didn’t take much time at all to make. The next ones will have better camera work and audio!
Amazing video. Would love to see more like this from you! Lovely.

Good video, enjoyed watching 👍
Thais are very nice people.
The sunglasses look so nice and it may suit me too. I tried to see what brand it was. But I still haven't read it all. Please give me the name or store you brought it from. I would appreciate your generosity. Kob khun krub.
Good video 👍
It real I like it
Did any of them recognize you from ring announcing? Great tour, that white cat looked really cool in the dark!
3 people recognized me from my other TH-cam channel and one from the ring announcing. On TV I’m in a suit and tie, so they rarely recognize me if I’m dressed casually and/or have a hat on.
what camera did you use?
A7siii with GM 24-70 f2.8 lens.
I normally try to avoid going to this kind of place as much as possible. I just hate to see dog/cat poop on pathways. Whenever I see it, it sticks in my mind for 2-3 days(I guess I need to see a shrink 555). By the way, many of those people live there because it's conveniently located in the heart of the city, not because they are really poor.
Yeah, you can see the difference between people who are very poor and people who live there because it’s near the docks, warehouses, and local businesses etc. Their houses are more like townhouses on the peripheries. The central shacks in the shanty town area vary greatly too. Some have very little access to any opportunities and others may have grown up there and chosen to stay, or they’ve chosen to allocate their financial resources somewhere else (vehicles, businesses etc.)
Bkk Pat knows how to do a proper slums video
I just checked out his video. Yeah, he did a solid job. Very different style to me. His videos are great - very well researched and informative. I’m aiming more to meet the people and show what it’s like for those who live there and let them tell their stories a bit more.
Show me your country's most vulnerable community.
Which country?

the guy who own A chichen is not Thai. -I can tell from his Accent.
Either myanmar or cambod if in thailand 🤞🏼
He’s Cambodian.
In the subtitles, on the top left, I wrote that he’s Cambodian.
