    Matt was greatly simplifying the concept of Roko's Basilisk. If you want to read some capital-W Wild theorizing about both AI and the nature of existence, go look up a full description. (To be clear, I think it's nonsense, but fascinating.) My bad attempt at summarizing:
    1) A future AI that knows you didn't support AI in the past will be able to simulate your existence so perfectly that you won't be able to tell you're in a simulation, and then torture you for a virtual eternity. It would do this to maximize the chance of its being created in the first place--that is, people should put all their extra time and money towards the creation of AI.
    2) You have no way of knowing, right now, whether you're "real" or in that simulation.
    3) The only way this threat of torture can hold any sway over you is if you're aware of the "possibility" of a Roko's Basilisk situation. It's an "if you know that I know that you know" deal.
    An actual handful of rich tech people, when first exposed to this idea, were extremely disturbed. They felt like Roko (because that was the handle of the person who came up with this theory) had just told them "don't look at the invisible soul-stealers that are constantly hovering around you that you will never see or be affected by unless I tell you they're there". Thus it being called a basilisk (a creature that kills you if you meet its gaze).
    Again, it is a ridiculous thought experiment that requires multiple huge leaps of logic (actual AI is possible, perfect universe simulation is possible, AI will be so hyper-logical that it will do things in the future solely to ensure that you'll believe it would do them in the past, etc.). I'll be over at Rocco's Basilica instead.

    • @SteveBluescemi
      @SteveBluescemi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know if any rich tech people were upset. A tiny fraction of Less Wrong commenters may have been disturbed but we don't know who exactly. The site admin, on the other hand, took it very seriously and banned all mention of it to prevent anyone else from being disturbed. This naturally led everyone to find out about it right away, due to the Streisand effect. So either that guy was being an idiot (possible), or he was being extremely shrewd and knew his censorship would spread it faster than anything else because he wants lots of people thinking about and working on AI (also possible).

    • @madelainewentzel2362
      @madelainewentzel2362 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thank you for the summary of the original idea, matt's explanation put me in pain...
      i think that the original idea can be tweaked to make more sense if 1) the robot's purpose is to protect humanity and 2) it just kills them, in reality, so there's none of the simulation-torture nonsense. that way, anyone who knows that an ai like this can be created but chooses not to create it, or who disapproves the idea of it, is standing between it and its goal, thus not protecting humanity, so in the robot's eyes they should be eliminated before they can cause further harm
      there are still assumptions here (like that the ai is taught a certain balance between protecting human lives and causing harm for the greater good; if its sole goal was to preserve human life, it would be putting all of us in simulations and not murdering people lol) but it is definitely a more realistic situation and because of that more likely to freak people out

    • @vanivari359
      @vanivari359 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. It might take many decades, but robots will be able to aquire and defend their energy source. I bet the military will program it into their code to make unstoppable killer robots. Wasn't there the idea to make them run on biomass so basically make killer robots, who could eat enemy soldiers to keep going? There will be a point where humanity needs to be super careful about the rules we give them and how we enforce them. And there will be a day where an AI somehow decides/finds a way to override that rule/kill switch. It seems inevitable unless we hit a wall somewhere. And oh man, if i consider my contempt for a lot of humanity, i have a hard time to think that an AI armed to the teeth is very forgiving.

The super-rich must be cackling with unbridled glee at the thought of a divided, distracted populace that they'll no longer have to pay. Such a strategy might've backfired on them in the long-term, but once one side has control of AI and a robotic army, all hope is lost.

      Nah even Conan’s scenario is plausible while allowing the singularity to happen. I just listened to this podcast yesterday and the video elevates it so much. I also don't think Conan quite gets how theoretically fast an AI's intelligence could increase or how many robot human would invent in the meantime. Like yet, creating one singular AI and keeping it away from the internet or any outside information could be easily controlled, however the second someone gives it access to the web it may learn to keep quiet (like Matt says) and then strike when least expected. Also you know companies would create a bunch of them at once and mess around with them to the point where they would be justified in their domination of humanity.
    Also can't wait to see Rocco's Basilika at the Troubadour later this year!

    It's interesting, because if the goal for the singularity is to keep itself online, and run a functioning society, it becomes a question of whether society run by the singularity can exist with people criticizing the AI openly, or whether actually getting rid of all critics is the only sustainable way for a society to optimally exist. Maybe certain types of negative or destructive critiques would lead to death or banishment, and then constructive and caring critique would lead to promotions.

    I went to get details about the divorce and it told me "Conan O'Brien and his wife, Liza Powel, announced their separation in November 2020 after 27 years of marriage. The couple released a joint statement saying that they had "been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate." The divorce was finalized in April 2021."
    sounds legit to me, obv conan forgot about this. chatbot 1, conan 0

    The good news is that if AI becomes hostile to humans it's very unlikely to discriminate so there's no point trying on that front. The bad news is that humanity won't likely plan ahead and try to be very careful to create an AI which wants to empathetically live alongside humans and other life. Considering that humans won't even do that for other animals with less intelligence, it doesn't seem so unjust either.

  • @shardhula4244

    I knew it! No wonder Conan needs a friend during such a difficult phase of his life! Poor Conan.
    His denial of his divorce and the fact that he kept his secret identity as a highly inflammable red and white Sky Balloon to the public, has made him seek friendship in unconventional ways- a podcast/memoir! I can't say I'm at all surprised at Conan. LOL🤣😊😬
    But in all seriousness. I would infinitely prefer this iteration of A.I and I would infinitely love this day. Possibly in the future reminisce the fact that current A.I.s seemingly don't understand the real world as close and comprehensively as we, living beings do! But I truly dread the day they overtake our collective human intelligence and the day they reach singularity!
    😬😰

    Currently ChatGPT can start to do a reasonable impression of Conan's writing/speaking style, and there one really good AI speech impersonator in private beta and multiple kind-of-okay ones. Deep fakes are going to harness something like neural radiance fields soon. Neuralink is just getting started but already has shown promising prototypes.
    In around 20 or 25 years, assuming the AIs haven't wiped us all out, podcasts are not even going to be a thing. Everyone is going to have brain implants, and if Conan is popular, then people will just blink and hallucinate a perfect Conan replica into the middle of a virtual conversation or party (or their bedroom LOL), just as easily as we throw an emoji into a group chat.
