  • An intimate performance of a song by John Hiatt and Ry Cooder. This is some low-tech recording we did for a Facebook live. I really like this song for its point of view, that of someone hoping to cross the border for a better life. Dreaming of a place with streets paved with gold only to find themself in the 'broken promise land'.
I have always admired the songwriting of both John Hiatt and Ry Cooder. They both have a great way with words. They bring us pictures of the reality that many people live and this sweeping line that speaks of desolation and desperation: 'Up and down the Rio Grande a thousand footprints in the sand.'
The story behind the song goes like this: John pulls up outside Ry's house and plays him the song and says 'what comes next?' and Ry comes up with the 'Broken Promise Land' line. The two have performed together often over the years, most notably in the band 'Little Village.'
