    Toukiden is a great series, and I feel like it's one of the few "MH Clones" to fully innovate on the genre.
    Moreover, I really do believe that Toukiden 2 has had a tangible impact and influence on the Monster Hunter franchise, having been an open-world hunting game released 2 years prior to World, and featuring the "Demon Hand," a mechanic strikingly similar to Rise's wirebugs.
    MH definitely brought it's own originality as always, but it's hard not to think that Toukiden has had an influence on the series since it released.

      @@CptEddyPrice I think you're being a bit harsh there mate. While I would agree that neither the God Eater series, nor the Toukiden series has quite the level of polish that Monster Hunter has, It's safe to say that Toukiden has solidly innovated on the genre with it's part destruction mechanics (more specifically in the 2nd game where parts can be permanently broken and drastically change a fight.) and that both God Eater and Toukiden have narratives that put all of MH's to shame honestly. That said the last point is a double edged sword imo. at least with God Eater I found myself engaged so much with the story that when it ended I didn't have the drive I typically do in a MH game to grind out new builds and hunt for the sake of hunting (until my 2nd playthrough that is.)
      TLDR Although I agree MH is the superior series between the 3 and as the progenitor likely will be for a long time coming, to say the others are so much worse as to be "Garbage" is not only a bit much but causes you to come across as childish and obsessively fanboy-ee which I'm sure isn't what you want.

  • @YuriaTheWitch
    @YuriaTheWitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I really loved this game and the sequel. Toukiden Kiwami had an extremely dense Maitama system that allowed you to do some really crazy stuff. Unfortunately Toukiden 2 toned most of that back, but the addition of the limb destroying in Toukiden 2 kind of made up for it. In Toukiden Kiwami you can semi destroy limbs and leave the oni with phantom limbs, but in Toukiden 2 you can completely destroy limbs and by doing that you end up forcing the oni to move and attack in new ways.
    Also unrelated, the Naginata weapon type in the Toukiden series is what I wish the Insect Glaive played like in MH. I hate the kinsects, but the fast paced combat with aerial elements is so much fun.

      I never played the first one, but I like the Mitama a lot in the 2nd one. If I had one issue with it, it’s that there’s 200 of them, but I feel like I’m only ever gonna use maybe 60ish of them. If I make a unique build for each weapon type, that makes it 30 exactly. I double it just for experimenting, but I feel like they should make each Mitama have some more unique features rather than 80% of them just being random mixes of skills, even if that meant reducing the total number in a future title.

    • @YuriaTheWitch
      @YuriaTheWitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KenBladehart Definitely more streamlined and easier to understand/utilize, but you can't do some of the crazy stuff you could in Kiwami. It took a lot of work, but getting the infinite combos and the insane one skill builds with infinite hp/stamina regen in Kiwami was so much fun. Toukiden 2 felt very simple and safe by comparison. Not bad, but just not as many options or extreme variety. In Toukiden 2 it never felt like you could break the game, which is good from a design perspective, just not as fun for the hardcore playerbase that wants to put in thousands of hours and make something unique. Thankfully aside from the Maitama system, I enjoyed just about every change from Kiwami to Toukiden 2.

      The tutorial quests barely teach anyone anything, which is why people always claim MH has a steep learning curve.
      Back in gen 2/3, they threw you into a quest to kill some Velociprey, no one's going to learn their weapon's optimal combos, or even how gauges work, hence people thinking that CBs are complicated.
      If MH had a proper training mode, a CB tutorial will guide you through all the combos, starting from normal attack strings, phial combo, shield charge combo, AED combo, SAED combo, counter a monster with guard point, guard point into SAED etc.
      And every single weapon will have entire breakdowns to every move they have, how their mechanics work and which combos are effective in which situations.
      In fact the only time MH has something like this was the clutch claw tutorial quest in Iceborne and people skipped that.

      @@burns5701 well that’s the publisher that they share, but the studios that made these two games are completely different companies. Nioh was developed by Team Ninja and Toukiden was developed by Omega Force. I think they just share similar inspirations in the absolutely badass weapons of the ninja and samurai of feudal Japan. Nioh 2 has done melee combat better than any other game in my opinion, in terms of build variety, jutsu/magic options to mix into combat, the incredible depth of learning each weapons moveset and fully utilizing it, and to top it all off you have yokai abilities! After defeating some enemies they will drop a soul core that can be equipped and give you a move from that enemies moveset that can be equipped and used in battle yourself. It adds so much fun and variety to the game, and I think it really takes melee combat to the next level. It’s a must play IMO if you’re a fan of Souls games. Just one important tip: don’t go into it expecting to play it like a Souls game, it is very much it’s own game and has its own flow and overall slightly different feel to the combat. Anyway I’ll stop gushing about this game now, just play it!!!

    Glad that this series is getting some attention. I remembered playing the first one on PSP and fell in love with it. especially when you reach endgame, the build variety you can make with all those warrior souls(forgot what they are called). I made a katana build that made me run and attack super fast and it felt so awesome to play. It has yellowish wind effects so I look like master Yi's ult from league.

    I remember trying Toukiden 2 a while ago but bouncing off it big time. Mostly because the NPCs you fight alongside tended to just solo every early game monster in minutes before I could even get my bearings. But if I'd go in solo, it'd take me like 40 minutes despite hitting the monster constantly. I felt very reminded of my early MH experience, funnily enough.
    The footage here seems much more slower-paced thanks to the demon claw hookshot not existing. I think that might solve my issue with NPC slayers at least...

    • @RicochetForce
      @RicochetForce 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could change the aggression of your NPC slayers. If you went in with all of them but set half for support or only 3 and you're golden. I do agree that they were way too aggressive and effective for early to mid-game stuff.

    Before MH World came out I played Toukiden Kiwami on PS4, and it did a great job of scratching that hunting itch. As someone who prefers playing on console over handhelds, this game was the perfect stop gap for me until World was finally released. It was interesting and fun to see another company's take on the MH formula, and I liked how they simplified & streamlined some aspects of the game. I think my favorite aspect of Toukiden was being able to choose which AI hunters I wanted to bring with me in offline quests, and they actually did a good job! The combined team attacks were also a fun addition, I think it could be cool to see Capcom bring those into future MH titles.

    i remember 4U having tutorial quests in the arena actually, the difference is that you get told everything first and then you fight the monster. i agree that they could implement this with the toadversary in rise, but most people tend to skip these tutorials anyway, and from what i can tell, the real problem new players tend to have is with item use, crafting weapons, skills, and basically everything else that *isn't* combat. then you throw in wirebugs and dog riding and all those other complications and this is where people tend to suffer.

      @Wemple I mean looking at the move lists you can see in rise and world that it doesn’t have the more secretive moves. I would bet even if they did give us a tutorial they wouldn’t show the more hard to find moves because I think it’s a deliberate decision to make these moves hard to find so that you get the cool moment when you find it after experimenting or accidentally imputing it and trying to reverse engineer it. What I know isn’t for everyone but it’s far from a objectively bad game design error.

    That is good and all, but out of all of the good features in Toukiden the one that MH should without question steal super hard is the way Tenkos behave when you meet them in a quest.
    Namely, if you send your Tenko to an area, and then take a quest in that same area, you can find your Tenko wandering around doing its thing. You can then run over to it, the Tenko will do a little dance of happiness (Ninja Dude will smile because he loves Tenkos), and then the Tenko will follow you around for a bit as effectively a 5th Party Member who is solely focused on a Support Role. Imagine if you could find your Meowcenaries or Exploration Teams when you were out on quests. Even if you couldn't interact with them like you just saw them in an unreachable area fighting, I don't know, a couple Jagrases or something. Or you met them and they would give you like a couple First Aid Med + or something. Just little things like that.
    The second game replaced this with finding other player's avatars fighting in your world and getting them to join you for a bit if you helped them out which is 100% a downgrade but whatever.
    (I wrote this comment before I had gotten to the part where you mentioned this.)

    A kind of downside is that it uses Monster Hunter's old mission progression where the Story missions have separate progress from the Online portion (Phases), thankfully they at least made the required/key missions to progress to the next Online/Phase rank show up as red.
    There are also some DLC missions which kind of sucks that some stuff like weapons & armors are stuck behind a pay-wall.
    There is also a Soul Sacrifice collaboration quest where despite the monster's "encyclopedia" entry and weapon being transferable through Data Sharing that save into the PS4/PS5 version, that collaboration mission only shows up within the Vita's Phase missions and only other Vita players can find & join it if someone tries to host it.

    I miss this game and I played this a lot back then on my Vita, it feels more casual than other "MH clones" I played, but seriously fun bundled with lots of content I spent over 700+ hours in it. It made me remember that having a SPD build while using longsword is the most broken thing ever, you'll get purple slashes for days and Destroyer (unleashing an ultimate attack when the gauge is full) that will sometimes restore your mitama stocks.
    I even got my girlfriend a Vita copy of this game too even though I need to wait until she replaces her Vita-1000 battery.

    I’ve been replaying Toukiden 2 recently. Honestly I love that game. I’d very much like to see a 3rd game. Even today, I think it holds up well. I only have a couple gripes with it, even 5 years later since it came out. The lack of transmog for armor is a big one for me. I guess I’d also say some weapons could use a little more complexity, like the Chain Sickle. Compared to the sword, it just doesn’t feel like you have a lot of options. I still love the chain sickle, but I would like to see some more options when it comes to attacking.

    I hope you plan to cover the God Eater series as well. One feature in particular I really appreciate from those games that Monster Hunter should also copy is being able to end your completed hunt early in the menu instead of having to wait out the full timer.
    Makes farming for materials more bearable, even though the missions are generally A LOT shorter anyway compared to the average hunt in any MH game.
