At first I was thinking "Just turn the amp off before unplugging the guitar", but you do make a good point about switching while on stage. That's way easier than having an amp per guitar.
Also, "It's the holiday season, cut the postman some slack". This is probably the most wholesome thing I've ever heard said about any postal service :)

Most guitars have volume knobs that if you turn down they cut off and I think it fixes that although I never really tested it

    • @coryman125
      @coryman125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Iirc, turning the volume down to 0 on the guitar doesn't stop the amp making noise if you unplug it. Though it does at least stop noises from hitting the strings or bumping stuff :P

I know that only a very few people hold the same view, but the noise while you plug in a guitar is just ✨iconic✨. For me, it gives the feeling as though the guitar had woken up to life, being dormant before it was plugged in, and gives me that extra first motivation when I start playing.
The only place I see myself using the noiseless cables are when I am swapping guitars on stage, which hasn't happened till now.
Don't get me wrong. I know that the noise annoys a lot of people. And this product would be a game changer for them. I am just stating my point of view and this product is just not for me and also not for the people who think like me.

The jack plug is magic... I have a couple of cables with quiet jacks.
Only about $12-15 if you need to replace a jack on an old cable anyway (and can solder). But.... it doesn't work well on active basses and far less common, active guitars. Plugs in silently, but the preamp powering up usually makes a racket that varies with type of preamp but they all have some (usually loud) power up noise.

What would REALLY interest me (not being a guitar player but an electrical engineer interested in music) is: How does the "silent" plug work? ---
O.k., I just found a video that explains: A reed contact which short-circuits the live and the ground connection, operated by a small magnet which is pushed back when the plug is fully inserted into a socket. Quite brilliant and straightforward! What still astonishes me: That you don't hear a pop or crackling noise when the contact opens or closes.

Awesome guide but I'm going to give an alternative to your quiet cable and a tip about the recording mic: D'Addario/Planet waves has a cable that has a physical switch on it, so you can decide when you want your audio back on (it can get dirty though and make some noise but some contact cleaner clears it out). These cables, at least 10+ years ago when I bought them, were coax and solder free. You just make a straight cut and put the connector to the cut end. The mic tip is if you are trying to write and just need to capture the idea so you don't forget, put the mic up against the body of the guitar and capture the resonance. Works best with electrics, haven't tried with acoustics, but people have asked if I used an acoustic or DI on those scratch recordings.

Those silent plugs are available separately from Neutrik. Neutrik daughter REAN also makes a silent plug that looks like a vintage switchcraft plug. Shiny chrome instead of the ugly red. I wore out a couple of those, but they are like $2. Bought a dozen, only need them on the guitar end, so that's 12 cables. I'm sure they will last me until my last strum. Stuff just wears out, but in the mean time this is awesome! Not affiliated with them, just a user.

Thanks for the tip on the guitar stand. The ones I've had have driven me nuts. On one of them the feet folded when I put a morgan jazz guitar in it resulting in it falling on the floor and cracking the neck. I also had a strat tipping out of one because there was no lock holding it in place and I stupidly gave it a nittle nudge whilst vacuuming. Lucklily no damage other than a tiny nick at the headstock and a broken string. The rubber feet on many of them also have a nasty tendency of leaving black marks on wooden floors - grrrr! I've resorted to storing all my guitars in their cases in a closet.

I love the Silent plugs too! And you don't even need Klotz cable. The plugs are made by Neutrik and they have an angled version as well. Being Neutrik PX-type plugs, they are modular, and this is why that matters: for thick cables you really, really need the BPX-L replacement bushing & strain relief. All of you who have struggled to get Neutrik plugs onto thick cables (as I once did) now know what they have missed. :-)

Paul, I would add the Line 6 Pocket Pod as an 11. Fun with MANY cool features at Great price. Battery or AC powered, expandable with your computer but small, smart even with a belt clip. While it won't replace a pedal board its surprisingly cool via headphones or into a small amp. This is not your average toy.

I also allways brought a plug, you could just stick on a cut cable.
Sometimes, you have a break in the cable.
It's a good adiea, to bring a spare, but if you didn't , you could just take a scissors,
cut it in half, and stick the plug on, in no time.

Past year I asked Santa for a nice pack of 10 jazz III picks (several materials, thickness,...) 😉👍. That changed forever my approach to string attack and giving me new feelings specially while soloing if It is really what I do 😆. Man, this new list looks sooo ambitious. Thanks, very useful.

I think I've heard of this Transcribe software before, but I never bothered to check it out. I just downloaded it and boy, it's pretty good! It does a great job of slowing down sound files without introducing weird artifacts.

The plug at the beginning is actually the Neutrik Silent Plug that is being manufactured separately to this cable. The manufacturer of this cable just used those plugs.
So if you want to solder your own cables or just dont want to buy this particular cable, you can just get the Neutrik SIlent instead.
