    I love this! BTW it's not so impossible. The restorers of the Second Bulgarian empire were actually of Vlach origin (Romanian). We have a lot of history in common. The languages influenced one another so much.

    As a Romanian, I think this would have been somewhat preferable to actual reality. 😅 But I do have some pet peeves with this version of events:
    1) A state which would have included Bulgaria would have at some point in the 20th century made a play for the territory of the current Republic of North Macedonia. It could have been a negotiated settlement with Yugoslavia, perhaps splitting the territory in two, but North Macedonia was Bulgaria's great white whale which caused them to enter the wars they did on the sides they entered - the Second Balkan War, the First World War, Second World War - so it's unlikely the Bulgarian part of the confederation / state wouldn't have pushed for it. The most likely course of events would have been that at the end of the Balkan War, because of its increased clout given by the larger size, the Kingdom of Bulgaria and Romania would have been able to negotiate a more favorable deal regarding Macedonia, which would have been an important red line for the state. As such, at least part of the territory of North Macedonia would have been part of the Kingdom, especially the part more heavily populated by Bulgarians and Vlahs.
    2) Given the presented state of events, it is illogical why the Kingdom of Bulgaria and Romania would have entered WW2 on the side of Germany. The two constituent countries have entered for some reasons:
    - Romania entered because of the Second Vienna Award, where it lost both eastern Moldova (currently the Republic of Moldova and some small parts of Ukraine), as well as Northern Transylvania. The local politicians had a choice to make, between aligning with the Axis to recover eastern Moldova or with the Soviets with the aim of getting Northern Transylvania back. In the presented alternative history, Moldova isn't ceded - thus, it makes no sense why Romanians would have allied with the Axis in such conditions;
    - Bulgaria entered WW2 to recover what was lost in the Second Balkan War and WW1, plus North Macedonia. In the presented alternative history, the Second Balkan War didn't happen, and Bulgaria didn't lose those territories. The missing part of Northern Macedonia alone wouldn't have been enough for a casus belli, especially when weighted with the loss of Northern Transylvania by the state - a significantly wealthier province.
    In the presented alternative history, the Tsardom of Eastern Balkans would have either entered the war on the side of the Allies, or it would have otherwise remained neutral. Do keep in mind it was the main source of oil that facilitated the German offensives of WW2. Thus, if the Tsardom would have threatened to destroy the oil refineries and oil rigs around the Romanian city of Ploiesti in case of German armed intervention - situated several hundred kilometers away from the border - it is unlikely that Germany would have invaded. On the other hand, if the Tsardom would have joined the Soviet Union, Germany would have had no more reason to not invade, because the oil supplies would be lost to them regardless. Thus, the most likely situation is the Tsardom would have given preferential trading rights to Germany for oil while maintaining neutrality in WW2 - a situation Germany would have accepted because it would secure the southern flank against possible allied intervention, and accepted by the Soviet Union because the hypothetical Tsardom would have been a significantly stronger state due to its size than either Romania or Bulgaria were on their own at the time, plus it would not have wanted another army of hundreds of thousands to join the Axis campaign.
    Given these premises, the fate of the Kingdom as a communist state in the post-war arrangement is in question. It is far more likely that it would have served as a neutral demarcation zone between the communist and capitalist powers. It would have had a fate more akin to that of Finland or Austria, but less wealthy, because of the less advantageous position. It would also have had to invest far more in military development than Austria, something more akin to Finland, because it would be surrounded by countries with certain revanchist wishes against it, especially Hungary, Greece and Yugoslavia/Serbia, but would also be neighboring the Soviet Union during the Cold War, so it would likely be a playing field of spies on both sides. As a consequence, the economic situation of the Eastern Balkan Tsardom in the 21st century would be more similar to that of Italy than of Austria. The population too would be significantly higher, because of it being a facile target for immigration from the USSR during the Cold War, being an Orthodox kingdom with similar culture. It would be expected for it to be situated somewhere in the 60 million range today, so very similar to that of Italy.

    I'm genuinely surprised Bulgarians didn't declare independence once the USSR began marching towards their half of the state. It was, after all, the _Romanian_ king who'd bowed down to the Axis and invited disaster on Bulgaria as well as Romania by committing both to the catastrophic Eastern Front.

    Bulgaria was off the map for 6 centuries and in all this time Wallachia/Romania was a good mother for Bulgarian refugees and fought on Grivitsa, Pleven and Smardan to free their land. Nowadays, Romania is by any means twice as big and is hard to believe she lost her leaders, language, culture, anthem, currency to Bulgarians. Romania, 21th century's tsardom??? Mat Mapper, you're laughing stock!

      Romania betrayed bulgaria in the second balkan war stealing what's bulgarian, in the first world war we just got back what was ours , in the second world war we were Allie's. You are just like the serbs... betraying Bulgaria and making it look like we are the bad people.
