It amazes me how obsessively protective the BBC are of a 44 year old show that they almost never rebroadcast. Sometimes I think they don't want this stuff to be seen at all.
As I suspected, the copyright police have been very strict with this one! But posting it with a filter is better than not posting at all, right? As said in the video, If you want to see it unfiltered I have it up on my Patreon! www.patreon.com/MeganRuth
It's weird, this sketch used to be free all over the Internet like all their other sketches still are but all of a sudden just this one was scrubbed off. Its as if the powers that be have decided that they associate it with something politically incorrect or something even though it isn't in any way associated with anything like that. It's very strange.
An amazing fact about this sketch is that "flange" is not the collective term for either gorillas or baboons, but because of this sketch, is increasingly used for the latter in serious contexts. It is quite possible at this point that there are zoologists using the term who have no idea of its comedic origin. 😅
You beat me to it. I believe this is now internationally officially recognised as the collective noun used in science, and many official scientific papers have been published which use it. Reminds me of the term for junk e-mail "spam" which of course derived from Monty Python, of course I am not a "Pythonist" myself, but then that is a different Not the Nine O'Clock news sketch....
Utterly brilliant. The NTNON bad language sketch is also highly funny, where they have a conversation bemoaning the fact that bad language has become such a normal part of conversation that you used it without even noticing. Whilst using bad language without noticing.
Saw this sketch the first time round on the TV in 1979, when I was 13 , loved that series , pencilled in on the TV weekly schedule , we still on had 3 channels, so if you missed it and didn't have a VCR you had to wait for the repeats which could of been a year later or you could of bought the 12 inch vinyl album disc with all the sketches on it , which is what I did, still got it but no record player to play it on 😊
I'm having a genuine Mandela moment here. I've seen this sketch dozens of times and I could've sworn they said a "gaggle" of gorillas. Brains are weird.
You should react to some of their musical sketches such as I Like Trucking; The Hedgehog Song; Nice Video, Shame About The Song; The Bouncing Song; Wet And Lonely; The Ayatollah Song; Baronet Oswald Ernald Mosley; and, of course, Kinda Lingers, the song they closed the final program with.
Though a lot of those songs you enjoy more if you were familiar with the song/video they parodied - the Kate Bush and ABBA ones for example. As for Kinda Lingers, I have always wondered if the BBC censors _were_ that naïve, or whether they were wiser than portrayed and decided to let it through as it was the closing song of the last episode (and they probably enjoyed the show anyway! [If nothing else, it kept them employed!])
Three other superb "TV discussion" type sketches they did were "Jean Pierre the Perve" (Rowan Atkinson as a rather strange French art critic finding British public monuments suggestive), "Cut their goolies off" (a discussion on law and order which takes an unexpected turn) and one where the panellists keep inserting rude words into everyday phrases without realising it.
One of my favourite stories is how the scientific community have adopted "phlange of baboons" and "whoop of gorillas" rather than the official collective nouns, and used them in scientific publications, even though the terms were made up for this sketch.
Listening to the radio earlier, and someone mentioned this scene, which I've seen many time, so I came on here, and look who it is. Hope your well..... Not The Nine O'Clock News is a classic!
Is this the only sketch that’s blocked like this? I only learned about it today and it’s quite frustrating not to be able to watch it. Can someone please explain why?
I would like to ask, Miss Megan, The British humour you watch, is there anything comparable in Canada? I hate to be THAT person but if someone were to ask me “Name some funny Canadian stuff” my response would be “Kids in the Hall, Letterkenny and Justin Bieber’s discography…”.
Rowan Atkinson.. aka-mr bean in gorilla costume. Hard to see facial expressions due to foggy view, due to copyright concerns from you, shame. Even the audio alone was funny..another British classic comedy 🇬🇧
Congratulation! Great reaction! Great idea to post it with a filter then not at all, and on the platform "Dailymotion", one can still see it in its original version. I agree this sketch is hilarious, but unfortunately, it's no longer politically correct and apparently, it's racist in the modern world. Obviously, creators and actors had no intention of producing a racist sketch, but if people feel offended as they do, I read comments, one has to accept it, reluctantly. What a shame for such an innocent sketch.
How on earth is it racist? One really doesn't have to accept it all because it clearly isn't racist in any way shape or form, the guy's playing an animal! If people feel want to feel offended that is entirely up to them. Being offended is entirely subjective.
Hedgehog Sandwich? I still have that somewhere! I had a huge book/calendar thing too that had jokes and news items like in the show running through every day.

It's strange because it seems it's just this one they have a mare with! My other reaction to this show didn't have any issues at all
We paid for it
It's in case,in 2023, anyone identifies as being a Gorilla..
They show it on BBC iplayer
Is it the BBC or is it TH-cam ??
"Wild? I was absolutely livid!" One of the best lines ever said by anyone. 🤣 Hope you're well, Megan.
Was going to say the same thing, one of my all time favourite lines that I have used many times!
Actually, it was said by a gorilla.
agreed.... one of my favouite comedy lines EVER

IT WAS STILL FUNNY, THE BEST SKECTCH OF NOT THE NINE 0' CLOCK NEWS.

"How she kept a straight face" She was Pamela Stephenson, now Dr Pamela Connolly, wife of Billy Connolly and a funny woman in her own right.
Dr & Dr Connolly. ❤
And extremely intelligent; she is a qualified psychiatrist (or -ologist, I can never remember the difference).
@@G6JPG Psychologists are interested in the workings of the brain...psychiatrists are interested in the workings of your wallet.
The Greek he broke into there translates as: “Life is a cucumber. Woman is a bicycle.” Though I’m not certain Aristotle said this😅
Thank's for that. I was never sure if that was actual Greek or not. I need to tell my Dad.
- and inside that Gorilla costume. Rowan Atkinson, Johnny English, Mr. Bean and all.
ohh yes I realised that! Rowan Atkinson is a complete treasure :)
And Edmund Blackadder!
I saw this sketch ages ago but i had forgotten how much they were bickering with each other
They have amazing chemistry! I imagine a lot of it was improvised
Utterly brilliant. The NTNON bad language sketch is also highly funny, where they have a conversation bemoaning the fact that bad language has become such a normal part of conversation that you used it without even noticing. Whilst using bad language without noticing.
We Apes remember seeing this live long ago
You should see the sketch when Billy Connelly is interviewed 😂😂😂
ohh thanks for the recommendation!!
@@MeganRuth There was so much chemistry in that one, they ended up getting married, and still are. She is now Dr Pamela Stevenson-Connelly.

Years before Mr. Bean, there was Not the Nine O'Clock News. Amazing so many Mr. Bean fans don't know that Rowan Atkinson was first on this show.
Love this clip & your reaction, so glad you found it 👍😆🥰🦍😂🇬🇧

Stevenson, and I think they married after the series (though that may well be where they met).

I enjoyed the video and your reaction made me laugh even more, I laughed with you 😂 They say laughter is the best medicine, how true.
I remember this... it was absolutely hilarious for it's time and still is today!! 🤣🤣🤣
The terms "whoop of gorillas" and a "flange of baboons" were made up for this sketch, but came to be the accepted collective nouns for those species.
I think the interviewer was Pamela Stephenson, now Dr Pamela Connolly. Married to Sir Billy Connolly.

It was piss easy to find on YT for about a decade, then it suddenly disappeared one day, and hasn't been reuploaded since.
@@quasarsphere I read somewhere that the producers realized that they could make money from it, and that’s why it was withdrawn.

A lot of the most famous American comedians are actually Canadian.

"Wild? I was absolutely livid, never been treated like such a twat in all my life!"
Amazing fact that the sketch it changed a group of gorillas into a woop of gorillas.

I think it was inspired by a short story by Kafka?
Probably!
