I think when people say sampling isn't music they are mostly referring to people who just slap 2 uncut splice samples together and put some trap drums under it. Any producer can make a beat like that in 5 min and it will sound fine. I totally agree that sampling is a art and i use samples myself but i get what people say. it can be really easy to make something that sounds pretty decent really quick using samples

Dope chopping man, really digging this beat. I need to try chopping my drums like that, I always just try and pick out each individual sound but this keeps the feel of the drums way better I think
I was thinking the same. Keeping the feel is more important than the sound itself. In a way going through and choosing from thousands of drum samples is like learning to run before walking. I like to take sweet breaks and convert the audio to MIDI in Ableton Live, then swap out the sounds on the MIDI track before mixing the audio and MIDI tracks together. Makes for some super expressive drums.
