- This tutorial will teach you how to make a sparkling wreath decoration with crystal berries, as seen with my drum finish of Stacy Nash's Wonderful Life chart.
The kits for Wonderful Life will be available on Tuesday, July 9 at 8:15 am PDT at katie-strachan.com/shop
The practical instruction (after the introduction and overview of materials used) begins at 14:50
Supplies needed:
Glue: tacky glue or archival PVA, and toothpick for application
wire cutters and pliers
Inexpensive scissors
Your thread of choice for wrapping - I am using DMC 936
Multiple gauges of wire - I have silver tone craft wire in 20, 24, and 28 gauge
For berrries:
Round beads, 6-8 mm in size
Small sequins for cap
15/0 seed beads for cap
28 gauge wire
Details on items I used:
I like the Apex scissors for all purpose (non silk) cutting: hoopandframe.c...
I used 12 6mm rounds in Crystal Moonlight, and 11 8mm rounds. You can find Crystal Moonlight rounds here, although non crystal beads will be much less expensive: artbeads.com/p...
2mm sequins, color Bailey's: bedeckedandbea...
Miyuki 15/0 seed beads, 15-1882 dark topaz gold luster: www.caravanbea...
My drum is displayed on a small pedestal from Amazon: www.amazon.com...
The specific leaves I sourced were from a local grocery store (Draeger's, if you're in the Bay Area) that has a large floral department with good fakes. I had trouble finding quality greenery, especially out of season.
Crystal pearls come in a variety of colors, make for excellent berries, and are less expensive than the crystals: artbeads.com/p...
Fire Mountain Gems is an excellent online source for many different types of beads - please tag me on Instagram @kstrachanembroidery with the variations you come up with!
Wire brands I have used are Artbeads Designer Wire (their house brand), Bead Landing (Michaels' house brand) and Beadsmith (widely available at beading stores and on Amazon)
Katie thank you for sharing your techniques with us. So pretty
Thank you! I hope you'll give it a try - it's really fun and very easy
After watching your video where you mentioned having a problem finding silky leaves for your design. I was at hobby lobby today, and in the paper crafting section there were packages of different types of leaves… they looked like a fabric type material. I so enjoy your videos…your work is amazing!!
That is such a good idea! I hadn't thought of that - I was in the floral department and didn't look further, but I'll have to give it a try - thank you!
Wow! Beautiful! Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it
I am so excited for this kit to be released! I missed out on the Stacy Nash needle book and vowed I would never let that happen again! Thank you for a lovely tutorial!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy it! I loved stitching this piece!
Oh this was a great tutorial. It turned out amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your talents. It sure is doable to get the bling we all love.
Thank you! It really is incredibly easy - there's truly nothing to it!
Thanks Katie for the tutorial. I love how you spend so much time going thru each stage. It makes us feel it’s doable. By the way I have just re watched the tutorial on specialty threads as I needed help choosing the correct threads for a project
Thank you - it is very doable! Truly, there's nothing to it at all.
Such a BEAUTIFUL finish! I'm excited to try this too! Thank you Katie for taking your time to show us how we can finish our drum like you do! I love that! It's adorable!! I ordered the stand for mine! 🥳🎉🥰
Hope you have a good day! 🥰
Thank you! It's super easy and very fun.
Thank you for a great tutorial. I will have to check our craft stores for greenery now. There’s a lot of Christmas in July going on here. Your finish is beautiful and sparkly.
Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it!
Thank you so much!! What a fun project to make and your instructions are terrific! Can’t express my appreciation enough for your generosity. Thanks. Barb
Thank you, that's so kind! I'm glad you like it!
So beautiful! Thank you for the tutorial.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
Very pretty. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the interesting tutorial. Love the project.
Thank you for watching!
Watching with great interest. I am wondering why wrapping with thread instead of floral tape?
You could use floral tape, I just don't particularly like the look or the feel. I think thread gives more control and a more finished look so I prefer it, but there's no reason why you couldn't use floral tape.
Beautiful. Do you use 9ne strand of floss for wrapping?
Yes! You could use more but I think one provides a neater look and more control
What kind of containers for beads and sequins do you recommend for storage? And where do you get them? Thanks
I just use little clear plastic or acrylic boxes - you can get them on Amazon or Michaels
Thank you for making this so doable.. I've got several ideas for this technique! 🪡👠
Thank you! But it really just is very doable - there's nothing hard about it at all - enjoy!
