- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I don't see any comments regarding the temperature in the greenhouse. The plants will like it much hotter than the fish, and the warmer it gets, the less oxygen in the water. Just a concern.
Hi Jess, I've kept fish tanks for a while and I worry that fish tank will get too hot in the greenhouse. Since the tank is small it is not the same thing as it being outside in the pond at 90 degrees versus in there at 90 degrees. The amount of sunlight might be too much for them as well. It will make the water evaporate more quickly and may encourage plant and bacteria growth that isn't good for the water. Most people don't even recommend putting tanks by windows indoors (much less in a greenhouse). I hope it goes well but I wanted to pass along that information just in case!
LOVE you sooo much! Thank you ---for being you
Put the lid on. Mollies jump...out. Ask me how I know. I lost two this way. Poor Stanley and Livingston.
Yes, they can be very acrobatic! I learned the hard way as well 🐟
Plus the cats may have fun 😺
Yes they do jump! And if they have babies separate them because they will get eaten!
You mean mosquito fish?
Read about keeping fish in an aquarium, especially the type of fish you have. Do put the aquarium lid as the fish can / will jump. This is a small aquarium so the parents will eat the babies. Best option is to go to a pet store or Amazon and get a hatchery net for the tiny babies. Babies will need very fine food to eat or baby brine shrimp (this requires some work on your part). You certainly need a fine net to scoop babies from tank and into hatchery. These fish are live bearers, the black you see in rear abdomen are the babies.
Be careful the greenhouse where you are keeping the fish doesn’t get extremely hot as you have a small aquarium which leaves very little room for mistake as to water parameters. You need a thermometer. The ideal temperature is around 77 - 86 F. for mosquito fish.
Do buy fish food for adults as you don’t have any mosquitoes as of yet. Also, mosquitoes don’t like moving water or filters, so you might be lacking mosquitoes in this aquarium. Water temperature is of outmost importance when keeping aquarium fish.
If you will put a filter then this will suck in the babies apart from adults eating them, hence the hatchery net.
Water is very important, chlorine and chloramine are very bad for your fish. Buy a thermometer. Ideally water should settle and go through a cycle period before adding too many fish (nitrogen cycle). Fish with their waste will produce ammonia and start the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia turns into nitrogen and this turns into nitrates. By the way plants love nitrates. Ideally you should buy a test kit for your water.
Do not overcrowd the small aquarium (20 gal or so) with fish as ammonia buildup is lethal to fish (read about nitrogen cycle). In the winter months you will need an aquarium heater.
Very good information online. In reality you should of done some homework before getting the fish. We are stewards of our animals and should provide the best animal husbandry possible.
Good luck on a very rewarding and interesting hobby!
My biggest concern is the heat in the greenhouse making the water too warm. And the sun coming through the window is for sure going to make algae grow. Maybe consider an algae eater. Also, they look like guppies, Mollys are usually solid black, if thats at all helpful. 😊
I think they'll do good in the greenhouse but you'll definitely get a lot of algae because of light. Fishtanks hold better in indirect sunlight... And I'd recommend you get a temperature strip sticker so you keep an eye on that. Also agree with other comments about the need for a lid... And we found that cascade filters with a sponge, a mesh bag with carbon pellets and zeolite work wonders keeping the water clean longer and it's not too expensive, just wash those very well of excessive saturation every week and change 1/3 of the water... Add water conditioners as needed... Best practice could be to measure parameters with strips until you get a hang on the sweet spot with your well water
Jess! When you do water changes, you can water greenhouse plants with that water! In the fish tank I mean!
Jess might know this, but there is a whole science behind keeping fish in tanks.. the way she does it here is risky, because a newly setup tank doesn't have the bacteria needed to process the fish waste and it can get toxic for them fast. (Google nitrogen cycle!)
I was coming here to say this.
I keep goldfish in all of my water troughs and rain barrel. They eat the mosquitoes and keep it clean. I have rain barrels under every downspout. I water all my plants from the, fish infused, rain barrels around my house, my chicken coop and green house 🤠
Add pothos cuttings to the fish tanks! They love it. It helps clean the water and they can hide in the roots
I do this to propagate it’s amazing how much faster they grow!
In 1970, we had a fish tank. This was before air conditioning in the home unless you were rich. One summer day, we left home for a few hours and came home to find all of the fish dead from the heat. I haven't had fish since.
The babies will end up in your filter. Get a filter sponge to put on the intake to minimise loss
In 1960 when I was 8, I lost my 18 year old brother and I was hysterical and had nightmares. Our old fashioned regular Doctor, told my mom to get a fish tank for my bedroom to watch and calm me. It worked. I had fish all my life to calm me till I retired 6 yrs ago to senior housing. For the fountain, get Miah to problem solve a large resivoir of water, so it does not go dry. Maybe a stock tank (which you can put more fish in as well), just outside your perennial garden that he can trench a drip hose, for water demands. P.S. get a tank scraper (with a razor blade) to keep up with the algae on the glass from the sun.
There are all kind of algae eating fish to do that job for you. I prefer to get pleccosomus (sucker catfish) to eat algae & clean the glass, rocks, caverns, & decor in my tanks. There are many varieties of pleccosomuses. They're all very hearty imo. The smaller Japanese algae eaters tend to get killed or ate by my other fish in my tanks. I've had fresh water fish & tanks for 30+ years. When I clean my tanks, I use fish fertilized water on my plants, flowers & gardens every mo. It's a win/win. You can also grow plants, especially micro & salad greens, year-round hydroponically in plant trays floating at the top of your fish tanks. Just like the rest of the homestead, everything works together aquariums/ponds, vegetation, water, microorganisms & nature are a wonderful team & another great resource for growing food especially if you raise fresh water fish your family likes to eat. 💯😉🙌✌️💖🌞🌊
“Like I need one more thing to do”, as we proceed to do the thing 😂 I so relate ❤
Like buying 40lbs of tomatoes at a time to put up lol buying work is what I call it 😅
Hopefully the heat of the greenhouse doesn't cook the fish, watch the temps.
Bwahahahahaha, a gardeners famous last word…….”i need to get more plants for this”
I got addicted to aquariums prior to gardening and man there is so much more to it than most would think. I saw a few mention the nitrogen cycle/temperature for the fish/algae issues due to the light and heat etc. If you can learn all of the nuances of gardening you can certainly learn fish/aquarium keeping but I needed and still need to research and learn. I started with one 20 gallon, went to 4 tanks and now I’m down to a 16 gallon, a 3 gallon with just yellow shrimp and a less than 3 gallon with just plants and a nerite snail for my husband to soon keep on his desk at work. Some channels I learned the most from are…Aquarium CoOp and Prime Time Aquatics.
Best of luck and I truly hope you don’t lose many little guys but I cringed a tiny bit at this video only because I didn’t realize there was so much to learn before I got my first tank even though my dad kept a tank when I was “little”. You’re a smart and caring woman so I know you’ll figure it out 🙏🏻💗
This was 3 weeks ago and they all lived
@@RootsandRefugeFarmyay I’m glad to hear that! Like I said, I honestly know you have a big heart and are certainly a smart cookie! I saw others approaching this video in a very abrasive way and I truly hope mine didn’t come across that way! I use water from my tanks when I do water changes and when I clean my filter material to water my plants and of course they love it! Again, I hope my post came across just as a little concern and not attacking! I can’t stand when people do that to one another! I absolutely love you, you channel & your beautiful family! PS- my 7 year old daughter loves you too. Her birthday is Dec 26th and her middle name is Lane (named after my mom whose middle name was Lane, passed way too young to cancer when she was 57 and I was 27). Blessings to you and yours always! 🙏🏻💗
@@RootsandRefugeFarmI meant to type that my daughter’s bday is also December 16th not 26th 🙃
Fish water poop is a great natural fertilizer as well! Every time I did a water change on my tank, I'd feed the water to my plants. They love it!
It’s amazing that you introduce mosquito fish to your farm. Just two weeks ago, I introduced goldfish to our homestead. We have rain barrels placed throughout the homestead. One is by our herb garden, others are next to fruit trees. During the summer, we have very little rain. When they are almost empty, we fill them up so we can take a watering can & water our plants. It works well. The mosquito larvae was a big issue. The goldfish took care of them in just a few days. The goldfish have two jobs: eating the bugs & provide fertilized water for the plants. One warning, if you have a cat, it may go fishing. We put wire cloth with heavy rocks over the top of the barrel so our cat don’t accidentally go swimming.
You might want to add a sun block on the back side of your tank to help keep the algae down. And great idea on adding more live plants.
Five decades ago, my first job was in a pet store. Your new fish look like they are Guppies. Mollies are wide and have giant eyes, like gold fish.
Thank you for researching the fish. They are very, very invasive and prolific. The only thing I would suggest is to watch if troughs and fountains overflow because of heavy rains. The fish can get washed out into your pond or nearby creeks. They can be devastating to other species. Mollies and guppies are different fish species.
I was thinking the same thing about them getting to her water source. Even a bird ( I think she has Heron) can drop them in the pond as they fly over. I did a research paper on this exact invasive species and they are like roaches. You will never get rid of them once they get into that water.
Here in Australia we can buy a fishtank temperature gage that sticks on front of tank, be careful my mother cooked my fish as the water got too hot Jess. Great idea.❤
That old claw foot tub you have would make a beautiful water garden in your green house.
I will chime in with what others have said, a new fish tank either needs time to develop beneficial bacteria, the nitrogen cycle, or you can get beneficial bacteria at a pet store and add it to the water. Without the bacteria the water will become toxic very quickly. Remember, fish basically live in a bathroom.
I'm laughing out loud over here. You showed your cut beets and I said out loud "ooh that's a pretty beet" right before you said it 🤣
Hello Jess, glad you are back. Had to look for you, and now hope you show up again! Enjoy your farm. Hugs, M
Watching fish is like watching chickens very peaceful 😊
But you also had to take care that it doesn't get TOO hot. It can happen. Right now I have parrot , Bachardis, and Angelfish fry. So yeah, I know something about fish. 😊
You will still be scrubbing that fish tank at least weekly, along with a partial water change. The greenhouse will help it grow WAY more algae than one that lives indoors. Ours with the heater stays at about 72 degrees which is good for tropical fish. The greenhouse will heat that tank up far more than that, and I'm guessing those type of fish are more of a cooler water fish (?).
I’m finallly catching up on your videos! I was 2 months behind after being sick every day with morning sickness and also spending a month living with family on hospice.
Awe how fun, we love fish! I have gold fish in my rain barrels they do a great job at esting the mosquito larvae
Your garden is looking lovely!
I used to have a separate Fry Tank tank for the momma to be in. That way I could scoop her out after so she wouldn’t eat the fry … The fry would then be added back to the main tank after they gained some size ..
Awesome idea. I was wondering how will you regulate temperatures for the tank within the greenhouse? Looking forward to seeing how this works.
Blessings
Great minds think alike. I just bought some goldfish for my rain barrels and my water feature. The rain barrels were full of mosquitoes and their larvae. In a day and a half all the mosquitoes and larvae were gone. I can set in my yard and not have to worry about mosquitoes. No extra effort needed on my part. And I enjoy seeing them.
Oh that strawberry lavender jam sounds amazing. I wish you sold them to out of state people. I imagine it would be a bit of a nightmare tho. I just think you do everything perfect and no one could make anything better than you😊😊😊
FYI, ordinary goldfish work great in stock troughs. They winter over surprisingly well, too. We have several goldfish that have lived 9 years (so far).
Very cool. Blessings to you ❤
Cool fish. Guppies is what we called them as kids. And yes they breed like rabbits. God bless you and yours too 🙏📖🐟
You back 🎉
I’ve had that lavender lemonade at all of the markets and it is delicious!
When you go to clean the tank, bucket out the water to water your plants. My sister had a saltwater tank at one point. It is incredibly expensive and an incredibly immense amount of work.
Yes guppies, and if you have heron they will need lots of cover plants. Thieving buggers, those heron.
You may need a sponge cover for over your filter so the babies don't get sucked up. We had to do that for our guppies.
*SIM UM AQUÁRIO PARA OS PEIXINHOS 👏🏻 UMA EXCELENTE SEMANA PARA VOCÊ JÉSSICA 👏🏻*
So cool. We keep a goldfish in a pond. It is a tiny little concrete trough thing that we turned into a pond. He she has lived through 2 or 3 winters and it's pretty shallow. I'm still amazed it is alive. It keeps mosquitoes down and frogs normally take residents in it too, during the Spring.
A local coffee shop has a lavender mocha coffee that I am in love with and now that it is getting warmer they have a honey lavender green tea too.
"I need to get some more plants...for them." 😂 Sure, the plants are for "them"
I love watching fish in the tank.
I never keep the tanks near the windows.
BLESSED MEMORIAL ❤️
DAY MONDAY.
JUST DROPPED 20°
65° 🌧 ❤🎉.
GLORY BE TO GOD.
Fish can be a challenge in general once you get to the cleaning phase down the road a few cleanings in a home. I will be curious how this works in the greenhouse. Maybe put some gravel on the floor or something? Good luck!
I would think that being in a hot greenhouse, the water would get too warm also.
Yes. Guppies! ❤ we had them when I was a kid. 😊
What a great, natural method for controlling mosquitos! I have mosquitos really bad in my yard and have been making trap buckets with the Terro brand mosquito bits stuff. I think with my next water change, I'm going to switch to fish.
One thing that helped me with algae blooms was painting the back side of the aquarium. My aquarium is near big windows and the algae was nearly impossible to control. Painting the back of the aquarium helped more than the algae fix products from the pet supply stores.
Aquarium Coop has a really good sponge filter that is great for establishing healthy bacteria, and aerating the water without a lot of movement that smaller fish and fry might find intimidating.
I found the health benefits of making water kefir at home and have had a blast this spring trying out basils, mints and other garden flavors of kefir. OMG, it's becoming the perfect summertime beverage!
Those are Molly's ❤ I worked on a tropical fish farm in Florida. Incredibly fun 😊😊
I am shocked, I was literally thinking about you getting into keeping fish earlier today, and I get onto TH-cam for my lunch time catch up and find you walking into the greenhouse with a fish tank 🤯 The reason I was thinking about it is because I've been deep diving into the aquarium hobby lately because I'd like to get a tank in my new home. And so for some reason this morning the thought crossed my mind. 🤷🏻♀️ Mind blown.
Happy Sunday, Jess! Sending love from sunny Southern California....
Yes, your cats will go fishing. Mine did. Then the racoons found my fish and thought it was easy pickings. Lost all my fish over one weekend 😢
Fish can be a challenge in general once you get to the cleaning phase down the road in a home. I will be curious how this works in the greenhouse. Maybe put some gravel on the bottom? Good luck! Hope this works
I love the thought of being a little entity inside Jess’ camera and being put down on the ant hill 😂❤️
I saw your merch shirt. I saw ZB in concert last week in OKC and it was the best concert I’ve ever been to! Revival was next level. ❤
Awww, I love this. We have them in 2 trough ponds and a 2 tier fountain. We first made the trough ponds when toad tadpoles showed up in a 1940s pool. They are awesome. We watch them all the time. If we had large animals they and goldfish would go in the water animal troughs for sure. We also added shrimp to our ponds for other algae control.
😂Timing is everything! I’ve used my little fish tank in the house for watering plants for years, but 2 weeks ago the last of my fish passed away. My husband put the tank by the side of the road because fish are not part of our retirement plan in 11 years. Then Jess, you go and get a tank set up. 😂 Nope, when we have power outages the tank was always my first worry, but no more.
Yea! Jess on a beautiful Sunday
My lavender infuser puffed exactly when you said “wish you could smell it”, lol. Blew my mind for a second!
I was just reading that making your garden dragonfly friendly helps with mosquitoes.
Cut lemon grass has really helped keep algae down in our outdoor water tanks
Perhaps put the tank on the floor under a table or bench in the greenhouse to keep it cooler and out of the sun. Or put it outside in a shady spot
Aww,girl! Love you Jess💕💚🙏🏻
Enjoyed the video 😊
Bless you😊
MMM lavender coffee sounds yami
Lavender peach jam is sooooo good!!
I also have several aquariums and learned this art before gardening. I have been thinking about a spot that my blood parrots can enjoy outside near the garden. Get both of my hobbies together ❤️
Ohhh. I need to see if they can survive up here. Our mosquitoes and black flies get nasty. The trout take care of them in the stream, so fun to watch them jumping for them, but close to the house is unprotected.
Hey nice to see you getting into fish, they are awesome. Watch father fish for a very easy minimal maintenance set up a natural tank.
We had fish like that, when I was a kid. The males had long, colorful 'swords' on their tails and we always called them sword tails. They may be a different variety, but boy do they look like what we had..
Hi Jess, just a quick note but lavender shortbread 😊, ❤
Jess,
Totally off subject here. I'm having some success with soil remediation with Garrett Juice, at least the plants are perking back up and producing. Foliar feeding seems to be quickest. I'm seeing potato leaves open back up... Stay tuned.
I love having fish! I have a tank in my house to water seedlings, and a pond (a galvanized trough) in the garden. I just use feeder goldfish in it, and there are no mosquito larvae! They totally eat them. Our local vector control offers mosquito fish to the community for free, but I haven't taken advantage of them yet. Excited to see how yours do. What fun! ❤
They are guppies. Yes, they are prolific!
They do look like guppies! When we had horses we used to put goldfish in the water troughs over the winter ,also in the rain barrels.
I keep gold fish in my rain barrels and they do an excellent job keeping mosquito larvae down
That's an amazing idea. My mom just got a greenhouse. The mosquitoes are terr at their house.
I’ve put spider house plants in my fish tanks with goldfish; maybe these fish wouldn’t mind them? Great idea for bug control. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
All fish eat mosquito larvae 😊 I've raised Coy and every fish on mosquito larvae. They do a great job in any water like lakes, rivers .....That's one of the many foods God gave them 😊❤ all fish
The ant pile wasn't bad. Oh, I thought you knew I'd sat in one earlier. LOL (Yes, my butt itches!) I enjoyed our fish tank, but when we moved from GA to TN it broke. Not had one since because I worked 50 hours a week for years. Thanks for sharing. Hope you get loads of little ones for your farm. Stay safe.
I used to keep gold fish in my garden rain barrels and frog pond. They also multiplied like crazy and were hardy enough to over winter in IN, as long as I cleared a hole through the ice every few days.
🇦🇺I had a large fish tank with a red tail shark, a silver shark and a kuhli Loach ( looks like a striped purplish worm). It eats the rubbish from the bottom of the tank.
Yes they are called guppies!! Had them to exercise my lazy eye , after surgery and for yeats!! They Are good relaxing entertainment!!
In case you didn't see my comment about the Crepe Myrtle...it is not a Crepe Myrtle. That weed tree will grow huge you need to get it out of your bed. I had those grow a couple times so I know they get really big. ❤ much love to you. God bless you.
Those fish are actually native to North America, western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). They do look a lot like guppies, but different fish. Cool experiment.
I used to keep fish, and there is a net box that you can hang on the inside of the tank to keep the small fry in. That way, they're in the same water and you don't have to have a separate tank.
Fun! God bless you too❤
Nice addition to the farm, but fish in tanks are extremely hard to care for ... even with a filter since it must be cleaned and maintained. Good luck.
I think I know those as guppies. I had Mollies that were black.
