Professional Model here: Tell them you want a "high tapered combover". And if they are a really bad hairdresser who doesn't know what that means, then say: "Short on the sides, longer on top, no hard line (You want it blended usually)." How short on the sides? 2-3-4 is the usual range. 2 is short enough to usually see the skin, but sometimes doesn't blend in nicely depending on your noggin shape or how your hair naturally falls. 3 is the safe short, and get a 4 next time if 3 still comes off as too short for you. I personally do a 3 on the side. How much you have taken off the top doesn't matter. You can have a lot of hair up there, or very little, as long as it is longer that is what matters. If you want to try a bunch of fun styles keep it longer, if you want it to be less hassle then keep it shorter. I usually go in once every 2 months and get an inch off or so, but my hair grows fast. Styling tips: Start simple, take a finger of matte and rub it in hands and evenly places through hair. Start at the back by your cowlick as that is often a problem area that needs the most attention, then work your way up the front and along the sides evenly. Sometimes take an extra small amount of matte and use it up front or at a part. You don't even need hairspray most of the time when your hair is shorter, but it does help. I hate that stuff personally, but I use it a lot when I am doing photoshoots. Last tip: play with your hair. Every weekend day you aren't going out try a new hairstyle or perfecting an old one. Practice makes perfect. Also, even on weekdays where you have to see friends or family just remember you can always just run your hair under water and reset. So no shame in attempting a new look even on those days. Hope that helps!

My hair is low porosity so its needs tons of moisture and none to little protein. Ugh its so hard to manage and so much to learn :/
