    I was a Passenger Service Agent. We worked for Pan Am not a third party vendor. No such thing as automation and kiosks. You waited your turn in line and we had to hand write a lot things and look up tariffs in a giant book. Then we boarded the flights at the gate.

    It takes real skill to say “sounds exciting” in such an unexcited way!

    I remember going to the PanAm World Port (Terminal) at JFK in the 80s. That was a time when you could park on the rooftop of the Terminal and even watch the planes come and go. PanAm was the airline to fly in those days.

    I can remember when virtually all of MIA was Pan Am check in counter space. Vanished over night.

    Those were the good old days. Now it's use the self-service kiosks, charge you $35 extra just for one bag, put the luggage tag on yourself, then give your bag to a person at the counter with your bag eventually getting lost. :/

      Ehh I would not say those were the good old days for those reasons. If you remember, without the self-service kiosks, you would have to wait 15-45 minutes to check into a flight which sucked.

      @@erwina4738 Agreed. The last time I had a flight cancellation, I rebooked myself in a minute via an app. I remember long lines and waiting 45 minutes to be rebooked just because one flight cancelled.

      You’re right. Those WERE the good old days. Real agents who dressed professionally. Look at some of these girls now who work for Spirit and Southwest. They look like they just threw something casual on before leaving the house.United doesn’t want to deal with people with their do it yourself everything. I fly Delta where I still always check in with a ticket agent.

      @@visax8550 Agree. I think even the major airlines use a lot of contractors for people who work in check-in and the terminals. The way they act, it seems like they were just hired off the street by a company they brings in breathing bodies to work each day.

      @@roachtoasties No mainline US carrier uses 3rd party workers for inflight services. Some smaller airlines may (rarely) use contract services for ticket counters in the airport and for luggage handling (on the tarmac, not at check in) and all use some level of contract service for ground maintenance in different locations. As a pax you will never come into contact with anyone but a mainline airline employee at AA, UAL, DLT, SW, JB, Frontier, Spirit, Alaska, Allegiant. Regional & commuter flights, its a coin toss

    Which reservation system did PanAm use? (SABRE, Apollo, etc.)

    • @PanAmMuseum
      @PanAmMuseum  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Panamac, Pan Am's custom computer system, but most of the bookings from travel agencies originated with SABRE. In the late-1980s, Pan Am was considering transitioning exclusively to SABRE because at that time Panamac was outdated, but due to the gloom financial outlook...these plans were abandoned and Pan Am went out of business in December of 1991.
