Pan Am Training Videos: Pax point of view vignettes (circa 1989)

  • Filmed inside the aircraft mockup training classroom at the Pan Am Flight Academy in Miami, Florida by Keith Smith. Linda Reynolds can be seen as the purser. This video was played during a day long seminar for all flight attendants in 1989 to provide the point of view of the passengers. After each clip, the training team would discuss better ways to serve passengers and reduce distracting noises and loud conversations from crew.
    Special thanks to Linda Reynolds for saving a collection of safety and training VHS tapes from the Pan Am Training Academy in Miami, Florida after the airline closed on December 4, 1991.

      Videographer was flight attendant Keith Smith, who filmed many of the videos for our training department. His idea for emulating the passenger's eyeshades going up and down was simply brilliant!

    That flight attendant who is on the thumbnail provided excellent service throughout and displayed genuine care for her passengers. Top marks for her! Loved how she recommended the lasagne for the economy class pax. The other F/A was awful in the bread roll, red wine and hot towel scenes. That hot towel scene was unbelievable! The bread roll scene was just bizarre, she uses ice cube tongs to handle the bread roll, does not explain the various types offered and clunks it onto the plate without a word. Nice. And the red wine scene was just as bizarre. Pax asks what type of red wine she is offering as in grape type, not brand name. You would never see a wine bottle covered in a napkin these days. Some excellent and appalling cabin crew service for your entertainment!

      I think it's that same flight attendant who diffused the "this is my galley" conflict in another video. She also looked professional and cared for the passengers in that clip.
      There's also a training video on how to properly do the meal service in first class. It's quite simple: everything should be plated on the cart gently, then placed on the tray table, and the wine label should be shown prior to pouring.

      The box is only a few inches over, they didn't care much back then. A ream of paper is 8.5 x 11 x 2.5, so a 10 ream box is a little over 11 x 17 x 12.5. Carry-on limits today are 14 x 22 x 9.

    • @straightpipediesel
      @straightpipediesel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is true today, union contracts usually require business class meals or better. Where available, the crew can trade for leftover first food in seniority order, captain going down. I know certain airlines ban crew eating the caviar, though.

    • @LMReynolds
      @LMReynolds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In those days, on Pan Am, yes. There were additional first class entrees provisioned for both the cockpit and cabin crew. Any leftover hors d'oeuvres, cheese, dessert, etc. were also up for grabs.
