If Richard Farina had lived beyond the early 60s his contribution would have been incalculable. The most tragic death in folk music and experimental writing of that time.

Ed Ward from NPR's "Fresh Air" said if Richard had lived, he would have given Bob Dylan a run for his money as the leading protest singer

@@garyrasberryjr.552 How nice of you to share that. Obviously, you know where I stand. Given that, my
intention is never to deny genius, whatever form it takes. In Chronicles Vol. 1, Dylan does what he would typically not do and that is to criticize the work of a deceased fellow folkie and friend as if Shakespeare once again appears to speak those immortal words: “Thou doth protest too much’.’

Richard Farina also wrote a novel "Been down so long it feels like up to me" which has become a cult classic.

It's more than that. It is a record of the temperament of those times, for those who were observing and thinking about what was happening.

@DougR- if you please allow me a remark- i did read it in that era so long ago, maybe 67 or thereabouts, and found it a little tough to understand. At that time i did not know about most of the things R.F. was referencing- the mcCarthy hearings, huac, cuba, black culture, jazz, drugs, academic/bureaucratic committees making policy which had fascist implications for the general public, individual corruption, evil, and a few other matters. It is a dense and complicated book, not for the faint of heart. Either read it or forget about it. You may have more profound things to do.

I was playing at a coffee house in Ipswich MA in 1965 when I met Mimi and Richard, we had about 5 minutes to chat . I never imagined that only 1 year later Richard would be gone forever. I never saw Mimi again. Cherish each moment in life as there is often no tomorrow.

And so few videos of them. This is indeed a rare clip, with Pete, Richard, and Mimi. I read somewhere Richard and Mimi would hide their songs when Dylan visited their apt in NYC, because sometimes bob would "borrow" lyrics.

@@A_Pa-PlainjaneNot the first time i saw this about Dylan. Dave Van Ronk said it too.

@@DiodeMcRoyall things considered, i guess lt is not a totally cut and dried situation. Im not in the music world or music business which seems pretty cut throat, so i dont have any real knowledge about it. It did piss me off that Led Zepp borrowed Taurus from Spirit to make 'stairway to heaven' and got away with it.

@@A_Pa-Plainjane In a way it's the whole story of music, and especially folk music. Jimmy Page probably borrowed the idea of the descending bass line from the song, but they made something kinda different with it, I don't feel this is really "stolen". Also this idea of the descending bass line can be found in thousands songs, things that were made way before the 20th century. On the other side, Bob Dylan was known to rip off completly certain things. I can't remember which song was "stolen" from Dave Van ronk, but i know Dylan called, asking if he wouldn't mind if he -Dylan- would record it. Van Ronk who wrote the arrangement wasn't super pleased about it since he never recorded it himself. But then, he learned that Dylan had already made it while calling him.
Pretty sure Dylan is a talented dude, but a lot of people from that scene that were kept hidden from the mainstream audience were also super great.

@@DiodeMcRoy fair enough- hard to separate out all the threads. We don't as always know where we got the idea....but then it should not be that hard to say "yes. I have to give some credit to those that came before."...
