    Resin in general is expensive, buuuut there's a type of resin called Art Resin that Peter Brown uses on his TH-cam channel. He says that its alot more affordable, less smelly, and pretty clear .

    A cast of Rex's foot would be something to bring to programs, too. You can let people pass it around to see the feet up close. Also, you can cast a bunch and make small shelves or hooks. Air plants on alligator feet hooks would be awesome.

    I think being able to buy Rex’s foot, or any other critter would be really cool for the zoo. Especially for lil kids who can “take part of the zoo” home with them, could even include a info page about the animal with the body part. And you could charge a lil extra since we know you’re putting the money towards the animals and we all love seeing them happy.

    Hey, great project! Fyi, resin can actually be really dangerous. I would recommend using gloves and having a lot of ventilation. The fumes don't always have a strong smell but can still be harmful. If you plan to use resin a lot, you might want to invest in a respirator suitable for fumes. Also, try out using glitters and mica powders and stuff! You can also embed things like dried flowers and leaves. Or maybe Rex teeth!

    Ok. Some helpful pointers that others may already have made: 1. Fumes are a thing. Be safe. Look at maybe a respirator or something. 2. C clamps will work easier than a bunch of rubber bands to hold the mold together. 3. Use the formula you can find online to add the right about of glow in the dark powder and stir in slowly. This can help with using to much which can cause the uneven dispersal of powder. And 4. If you do end up make more casts and expand this cool project think about getting one of those pressure pots (or vacuum- might have to research which would work better for your needs). These are just ideas to help you make this a bit easier. No worries and love the foot!!! 🐍🦎🐊 Also look at Peter Brown and other resin channels for tips, tricks, and other inspirations. Keep up the awesome work!

    I might be wrong, but I don’t suggest using a vacuum. Use a pressure pot. Vacuums cause the resin to over flow. Pressure pots minimize the bubbles through pressure. Vacuums suck up the bubbles and makes the resin flow out. But this is incredible. The detail in that foot is absolutely beautiful.

    Oh btw! You should use/build a pressure pot to cure the resin in and then your resin will be completely airbubble free! Dont use a vacuum chamber, the resin will explode everywhere. Look on rybonator's channel for tips on what to use and how to build one!

  • @purplealice
    @purplealice 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TH-camr's like Peter Brown who cast stuff in resin often put the filled mold into either a vacuum chamber or a pressure chamber to eliminate bubbles. And I'm pretty sure they buy resin in bulk somehow.

    Best tips for resin castings I can give (if you plan to make more for yourself) is to get a vacuum chamber to remove the air bubbles from the resin before you pour, then maybe some kind of miniature vibration plate for while you pour to encourage the resin into all the little crevices

    So one thing with resin... Don't use a vacuum! Pressure pots work a lot better. The vacuum basically pulls out the bubbles AND the resin, making a big mess. The pressure pots makes the air bubbles so tiny that they're practically invisible, and it doesn't make a mess.

    This kind of thing would be a great tool at the zoo for the school groups. You could also do casts of different snake eggs (from the slugs)! Resin is a great tool that way. I'm sure you could think of a bunch of things to cast or preserve in resin once you get more used to using it.

  • @TapperPlushMom
    @TapperPlushMom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah...when I buy resin, it can cost, wha...(tries to remember what it was last time I went)...$20? I try to go for big boxes so I don't have to go as often. I need to find a more cost-effective way to do that. BTW, what kind of silicon/silicone did you use for this and where'd you get it? I'd love to try to do this myself! (Not necessarily the Step 1 you did with Rex, but the "make a mold and fill it" thing.)

  • @alexg1556

    I recommend mixing the color in after you've mixed the resin and hardener. Mixing it in beforehand can effect how the resin cures. Mixing slower and dunking your resin into a warm bath before pouring can reduce bubbles (warmth makes it less viscous).

    If you have a back massager or Something that vibrates, you can hold that against the wooden slats as the resin is hardening/setting and that will encourage any air bubble to the surface and out of the final product. What a cool project:)

    Tip from someone who uses resin a lot. Stir very slowly next time and when the resin and harder are mixed, set the container in a water bath of very hot water for about 5-10 minutes. That gets rid of every single bubble. Just make sure water doesn't get into the cup
