The broadcaster Rick Edwards said he supports the proposal that voting should be compulsory for young voters. Mr Edwards, author of None of the Above said "a really radical solution like compulsory voting" is required to encourage young people to vote.
The centre-left think tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is proposing the idea that person's first vote is compulsory and are also calling for the option 'none of the above' is added to the ballot paper. Michael Yip, a student at Warwick University and Durr E Maknoon Tariq, a student at Kings College London spoke to Sarah Montague.

It is such nonsense that it is some infringement on your rights. You are forced to pay taxes, do jury duty, not to mention all sorts of rules and regulations that we are forced to deal with everyday. It is more democratic if everyone votes.

"Compulsory voting" is like compulsory volunteering.

Calling compulsary voting 'radical' is alarming to me as an Australian.

The right to vote means that people have the freedom NOT to vote if they so choose. Compulsory voting is an infringement on a person's fundamental right. Forcing people to vote and calling it freedom is like saying people have the freedom to pay taxes.
