  • That's it... I'm moving to Banff. Where else can you ski perfectly fresh corduroy at one resort in the morning (Norquay) and get to the next (Sunshine Village) a few hours later for fresh powder and insane inbounds couloir skiing. After my speedy November rip for first chair, It was amazing skiing Norquay properly. It's an absolute gem and has some of the most breathtaking views I've ever seen. Norquay is all fall line and the groomers were some of the fastest I've ever skied. Even though it's a few minutes from downtown Banff it get's way less traffic and according to locals is absolutely mental on a powder day. If you're visiting Banff, don't sleep on Norquay, it's got loads of character and is absolutely worth getting some turns there, especially if the sky is blue. For the second portion of the day we went back to Banff Sunshine Village so we could ski the opening of the Wild West freeride zone. It did not disappoint. Will the boys ever leave this skiing paradise? We'll just have to wait and see.
Huge thanks to the Ski Big 3 team and shoutout to Dan Evans @danevansmedia for touring us around and snapping the sick thumbnail shot.

Seeing Norquay always warms my heart. It was the home mountain for my ski racing team in the early 80's. I've always described it as the CBGB'S of ski areas - like the legendary Lower East Side dive bar in New York that birthed punk rock. Gnarly, rough around the edges and not for the faint of heart. The North American chair was like a portal to hell cuz it's main runs like Lone Pine had the steepest pitch and biggest iciest moguls in the Rockies. There was a great bit of mythology surrounding the North American in the 70's that you wouldn't be let on the lift if you were wearing a one-piece ski outfit made of slick or shiny material after a Japanese tourist in a shiny Bogner one-piece fell at the very top of Lone Pine and slid all the way to the parking lot at speed hitting his head on every lift tower on the way down. Did it really happen? Does it matter? That "no shiny suits on the North American" tale was traded at highschool smoking doors in Calgary for years. Norquay also had 3 nordic ski jumps for decades. The A, B, and C jumps. The C jump was built into the natural terrain in the trees near the old t-bar and was about 15 meters. The A and B jumps were skiers right of the North American with the A jump around 40 meters and the B jump 30 meters. These were proper ski jumps like you'd see on Wide World Of Sports just not 60 or 90 meters. Of course like any team athletic culture there was hazing involved when you joined up. I'm sure you can see where this is going. Straight to the top of the A jump the first training day that the jumps were open. You'd watch guys go before you and hold back, land right on the cusp of the knoll and get catapulted right out of their skis and do a full scorpion on their belly down the landing hill. At 13 years old it was beyond nerve-wracking. You had no choice but to do it at speed if you didn't wanna crash and embarrass yourself. But here's the thing: making it was one of the most invigorating moments I'd ever experienced on skis to that point. On training days we always had a couple hours of free skiing time after running gates and there were MANY days where my friends and I would just lap the A jump in the afternoon til one of the jumping coaches would tell us to beat it. At that point we would do our next favorite thing which was moving to the hidden C jump and building a kicker on the lip. That would absolutely drive one local jumping coach crazy. I have no idea why we were never banned from the jumps. Ah, the folly of a youth spent skiing! Love Mt. Norquay. It's legit going to be 100 years old in a couple years. Anyway, be glad you weren't wearing shiny one-pieces boys!

Speaking as an American in western Pennsylvania, you all have some of the most beautiful terrain in the world. Western US is beautiful as well, and European Alps are legendary, western Canada has everything a skier could want. In particular, the Banff area is exceptional.
Like I told James, I first heard of Lake Louise from a Max Webster song, “April in Toledo” 40+ years ago. Been wishing I could ski there ever since.

Don't ya worry, Firstly, I don't even know any local secrets and the ones I do, I don't advertise mainly because it's exciting for people to discover things on their own. Secondly, mountains only get busier because of pure raw population growth, development/accommodation improvements on/near the resort, and Epic/Ikon takeovers.
When I first started making YT videos I got tons of hate & threats in the DM's telling me I was going to ruin Whistler. 3 years later, I'm still skiing pow in my favourite zones every weekend. Snow will always continue to fall. The real SECRET, especially for those who are passionate about resort skiing and despise crowds is to create a work/life where you can ski weekdays and work weekends. Even Whistler is line-up free most weekdays.
I watched my home resort Manning Park, close for many seasons while I was growing up because they couldn't pay the bills and ownership would go bankrupt. It was a serious bummer. Recently, Chilliwack BC boomed, Manning is a lot busier these days, but at least the lifts can stay spinning for the locals.
Also I always get a laugh when people comment about keeping public mountains secret. Isn't commenting about your zone just making people more intrigued about the mountain itself?

I have been snowboarding Banff and other nearby resorts since the early 90s. Crowd come and go. Older generations move on and the new ones come in. The only problem is that SUVs and Trucks have gotten bigger and ruined the parking situation. The only secret spots are in the Backcountry.

Great memories skiing norquay, waist deep, bluebird day. it had snowed 3 feet in town in 24 hours. Had to hike up for the first run as lifts were closed due to avalanche control, a concept that was foreign to me as I came from Quebec to spend the winter. Also we skied delirium dive well before any of the infrastructures now in place. All we had was a well worn out rope to climb down the entrance. It was a blind climb down as we could see where to put our feet as we dropped off the top.

Oh boy, stuck snowboarders. I've seen this before and if not treated properly it can be a serious problem as it can lead to clogged runs and lift lines the entire day with stuck interconnected boarders all over the mountain and not enjoying it all and we just can't have that! No worries though we'll fix them all right up with fake mountain doctor extrordinaire Andy in his own mind has the solution though some say it might resemble something from a childish 80's ski movie but who am I to judge they were aweseme movies because you know, skiing stuff with brief episodes of nudity. Ski up to the boarders and introduce yourself very politely then throw them some hot sauce, take a swig yourself making sure they see it. Now question their man/woman hood for not doing the same while bashing their boarding skills, wait 20 seconds. Oh yea I almost forgot you need to be ready to "Ski Fast and Burn Ass" outta there, very important step I probably should have listed first, oh well you took a swig already anyways I'm sure. I tell you this right and it works like magic! Keep at it until they disconnect from each other and you'll have that ski artery unclogged and slicker than gooses snot in no time for everyone including other boarders. Now if you come across other stuck boarders make sure you do the same thing to them just do it a lot faster. Now there might be a large angry mob chasing you but that's ok, we're hear to ski right? Of course we are just make sure you beat them onto the ski lift after every run then throw some more shade at them once your on the lift and moving and they are still stuck in line. Laughing at them can help if they aren't quite motivated enough but you can try name calling too as that also works just make sure they are stuck on the lift first mmkay. Now at the top of the lift take another swig of "Ski Fast and Burn Ass" for good measure and wait for when they are close to getting off the lift then throw them some more challenges and shade and be ready to "Ski Fast and Burn Ass" the 1st of many of the fastest runs of your life. Now once they start to disembark take one more swig for good measure and start slowly skiing away with a huge smile on your face while starring directly at them the whole time and when they are 20-30m away yell "I'm just trying to help you out and educate you" then "Ski Fast and Burn Ass" like you've never done before baby! Rinse repeat and have a glorious day skiing in all that wonderful snow sunshine and happy faces, I mean who doesn't like skiing or boarding eh? Just make sure you don't stay in one spot for too long and at the end of the day ski right to the truck open the ice chest and throw out a 6 pick for them and get the heck outta dodge as fast as possible. Bam! Just like that you solved all the worlds problems and had the most and fastest ski runs of your life while bringing complete happiness and enjoyment to the entire ski mountain boarders included. You're welcome. Hahaha, please don't anyone actually try to do any of that except maybe taking swigs and Skiing Fast whilst Burning that Ass, it's just a joke people. You boys keep rocking it!
