My comment reflects my opinion that Joel can do more good continuing with his current role of educating and contending for a sensible, sustainable, resilient food production system that working for an organization already subjugated to the forces intent on the control and exploitation of life on Earth. Just because you worship God does not mean God will keep you from death by the evil ones. Ask Jesus, his disciples or John the Baptist. By confronting the WHO, Joel would become a target. Jesus himself avoided Jerusalem before His time had come, because He still had work to do in the provinces.

Absolutely. This is one of my favourite permaculture/homesteading videos. Has convinced me to look at buying (ideally) sloping land. The conversation type presentation of the video is absolute gold!
I believe Joel is a living, walking, breathing book of knowledge! I'll be honest Mike, my head was spinning from some of the stuff he was just able to rattle off and know like the back of his hand.
Joel was raised by a family with generations of agricultural knowledge done the right way. In addition, he has gathered an abundance of knowledge from reading and interacting with pioneers that went before him. His books list the authors on whose shoulders he has stood. We all have an obligation to pass on the good knowledge that we have learned. In addition, the best way to learn a subject well is to teach it to someone else.
My goodness, I wish I had 1% of the knowledge this man has. So intelligent.
Real life knowledge trumps Marxist PhDs any day.

Governments should learn from this man
That water system in the stream is something I used to do with my father. We had the same kind of water set up and the best tasting water. It supplied out house which was totally off grid, no electricity. We had a generator we’d run a few times a year. Once for Christmas for the tree, also to run a slot car track, and the occasional movie night.
13:38 Blew my mind. It was slow at work yesterday and I spent most of the day researching about irrigation, sprinklers, and pumps. It became obvious right away that the pump would be the most expensive aspect of the system. It took me looking at pumps all day to realize that I was all wrong, that the cost of a pump capable of the flow and pressure needed to spray from many large sprinklers to water a pasture would be many thousands of dollars. The answer was to look at small, cheap, high pressure pumps that could slowly pump water uphill into a reservoir. Joel is absolutely right, gravity can give you all the pressure and flow you need to run even a large irrigation system.
I love how Joel has that " I love when the new people - GET IT - look on his face 18:24. JS is a very solid Man. !

As a New Mexican I couldn't agree with Joel more. We are in such a critical water situation, The problem here is the people that make the decisions about where to spend the money in our state are bunched in 3 CITIES. Those of us that live in the country have a hard time making them understand that they are wasting OUR water.
show portions of this video to your city council and county leaders....it has to be socialized because they are in a mindset of concrete/construction for every solution....vs. organic.
@@AB-ol5uz My city council is so far removed from the "powers that be" I live in a very rural, farming and ranching area. Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces are the most populace areas They don't care they want pretty streets, clean areas and would have a coniption fit if someone put anything like this anywhere near their Mc Mansion. Very sad. We are always last in education, 1st in child hood hunger, 1st in crime both property and personal. Now mind you most of those statistics on crime come from those same Ivory tower neighborhoods that are destroying the rest of this state. Not a night goes by that we aren't hearing about another murder or 2 in Albuquerque, Guess where they are trying to defund the police. Sorry I'll get off my soapbox, just very frustrating.
I kept trying to get this idea through to the mayor & city council of Colorado Springs... to no avail. They don't get it. They also don't understand that it would both prevent flooding and help stop wildfires, and provide water sources to put those fires out. They don't listen.
I don't live there anymore.
It is quite frustrating to have some of the answers but no one willing to listen.

The problem is not only where the state leaders are located but who they are. If you'll notice , Democrats gather in and control the cities. The mayor , the city council , the city attorney , are usually Democrat . Thus they have control of a large number of people in a concentrated area. And from the city their power spreads out like the tentacles of an octopus to the county. If they control enough counties they can control the state. They will get the people to believe that they are going to do for the people while their real goal is to gather political power. It's like the child molester offering a lollipop to a child without the child asking what do I have to do for the lollipop? Or what happens if I take the lollipop? Makes me think of the story about the turtle and the scorpion at the river that both want to cross. The scorpion asks to ride on the turtle's back across the river. No , replied the turtle because you'll sting me and I'll die. No I won't replied the scorpion. I promise. So the turtle let the scorpion get onto it's back and started across the river. Just as they approached the other bank , the Scorpion said " I can swim from here " and stung the turtle. " But you promised " said the turtle. " I know " replied the Scorpion. " So why did you sting me so that I'll die ?", asked the turtle . " Especially after you promised that you would not sting me and I gave you the ride on my back , " said the turtle. " I am a scorpion after all and that is what scorpions do ! " , said the scorpion. " You should have known better than to trust a scorpion . "
It is that way with Democrats. It is not what they say they will do for you. It is what they do to you that matters. So who is responsible ? Those who voted the Democrats into office are the ultimate responsible ones. And for those who keep the Democrats in office ? Shame on you !

I am really enjoying your Polyface farm series. Such a wealth of knowledge and information! And how generous of Joel Salatin to spend so much time taking you all around and explaining all of his systems. I think this will be extremely helpful for homesteaders all over the country and the world.
My dad knew where my great grandmother's homestead was and we'd take rides there to pick apples from trees they had started. There was a natural spring on the land we'd drink from delicious!

One of the principles of Permaculture is to identify the God-given resources that sustain life, like water, solar and organic matter created by microorganisms in living soil and allow them to nurture the environment. Industrial agriculture destroys the natural resources and replaces them with synthetic inputs purchased from corporations.
Why? Because there isn't any big bucks in being self sufficient. Why? It makes too much sense.

Also..adding in ponds means more plant growth, that in turn stops soil erosion. Also help as a fire break too. So another couple of wins.

In general , the eastern states do not have the extremely dry wild fire conditions as they do in the western states. But controlling soil erosion would be helpful as well as helping to control flooding.

I'm from QLD Australia so don't know a great deal about weather and land conditions in America. Here everywhere has the potential to do everything. Lol

Well , California has six seasons. Spring , summer , fire season , fall , winter , flood and mud slide season , and that brings us back to spring again. The way te cycle works is this . Spring brings the end of the winter rains. Then there is the growth of the weeds and rush such as the tumble weeds . The photos that you see of a nice green flowering California are not like that much past the beginning of April. Mid April is when the heat starts and the drying begins. Summer is hotter and drier. Then the fire season begins and burns the vegetation off and burns on into fall . At the end of fall it cools off and the fires are usually over as the vegetation is now all burned off. Then comes winter and the rains. Then you have the floods and the mud slides because there is not vegetation to hold the soil together.
Because of the rains the weeds and tumble weeds grow again in the spring and we are now prepared to begin all over again.
It's a yearly cycle. Year after year. Any ideas ?

Mister Mike, have you ever watched Weed 'em and Reep? I feel like this incredible video goes hand in hand with their "flood irrigation". They live in Arizona and have flood irrigation that comes from a natural pond and allows them to water their yards naturally, therefor not using up water from the aquifers. It's pretty cool stuff!
Also, I had no idea you were doing this series and after watching the pig video and seeing that you had this video..... I am so utterly, even more impressed than I already was with your channel! (Does Polyface Farm allow visitors in general? If so, how does it work? I'm not near the level of homesteading as your family is but I'd love to go see his farm and pick his brain. I have chickens for the first time this year and I am absolutely in love with raising them. We are thinking about getting a couple of pigs (Yorkshires thanks to the other video I saw of you with Polyface Farm) for meat but I'd love to ask him some questions as related to my current property and possibly building up the environment around me.

Water, water everywhere.. Great opener.. Dead right about how important it is... In fact it is THE most important factor when considering any homestead or off grid habitat.. It is the life blood of everything.. Utilities ie gas, electricity etc you can do without, they aren't life essentials,, Water is..Great video. 👌👍👌

Research water rights in the western states. Water rights are actually purchased, and you can get in serious trouble (and even wind up dead in some areas) if you violate them.
@@Jasonsfarm So true! Water means money out west. People fight over the rights for it and jealously guard access to it. A friend who lives in Albuquerque told me land along the river is $1 million an acre and land a mile up the hill is $1 per acre.
@@jackfanning7952 Property with water rights is far more expensive, no doubt. You can find decentish land for less than $2k an acre in Utah, but with no water rights. That'll be another $2-3k per acre foot of water right. By the time you add it all up, in North Carolina or Virginia, in fertile soil with plenty of rain and ownership of any water on or under the land, $4300 per acre doesn't look so bad.
Joel is amazing with what he does. Having grown up drinking water from Lake Superior, I am just a bit jaded in that regard.

I can't thank Joel enough for showing you guys all of this, and that y'all got to taste the water ! I remember as a kid, the water ( from the well) on my folk's farm here in Dunn county, WI ( the western, very hilly & clay soils side of the county) , tasted pretty good, now it's harder, and not quite the same. I'm sure this was so much better than most any I've ever had tho.. . SO glad your kids were there for all of this , so amazing for them ! So useful for them to carry with into the rest of their lives ! My husband did point out that in even a 3 story home, you'd have very little pressure, for gravity fed system. Not that it can't be a great way to live off grid ! Just that you won't be able to have pressurized sprayers in your shower or kit. sink, etc. . Thanks for all of this !!

I saw a negative comment on Amazon about one of Joel's books. About how Joel gets on the pedestal to talk about all the worlds problems ect. evt. Which is the gist of the problem with a lot of people in the system. They don't see the holistic planet wide system of nature is what trumps the fake industrial systems that have attempted to replace nature and failed miserably. Joel's wisdom like old Indian chief's is priceless. His ability to put it all together needs to be followed by as many as possible. The state and their Artificial Imtelligence surveillance satellite systems war machine and operation dumb em down television additive drugs disguised as food ect. wants us all to think about anything and everything except where we came from and where we ought to be heading. We used to live in the Front Royal Va up on a mtn. We live about 45 min away now. We frequently drive down skyline drive just for those views. Had a visitor last week and I was telling her how much I love living in this area. Unfortunately we had to move off our farm and now live in a small town. Would love to be able to do most of this stuff for some fantastic water once again.

We were looking at a property that had a leaking pond and Scott was telling me about using pigs to seal the pond.
A well known, old time technique to seal the bottom of a pond but you still need to pay attention to other techniques to keep the dam from breaking. See pond-building by Geoff Lawton.
I love a good water tower. For home and garden use you don’t need a ton of pressure so as long as it’s 8 feet up you’ll be happy. Just remember if you want to use irrigation systems or drip lines, they are designed for certain pressure which needs to be regulated.
The climate is getting drier here. I'm working on how to distribute my spring water without grid tied power.
First step is three small ponds in the main section. Then a 12V pump connected to a solar panel to pump water to tanks uphill.
Can you use a water ram pump?
Awesome video Joel is just full of information because of his experience and what I like the most is it's usually not expensive to implement. For one he doesn't fight nature but tries to utilize it and work with it. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

This was so informative! We recently bought 6.4 acres in the mountains and it's slightly sloped, now I need to figure out how to get the most out of that slope. Would you recommend any videos and/or books to help with that? His explanation of the water being gravity fed down the slope was amazing. I could totally get on a bike and have awesome pressure lol great video!!

But you don't need to use a Bicycle to pump the water. You only need to save and store the water up on the slope. Gravity will bring the water down. You don't even need a lot of height. Check out Doug and Stacie on U-TUBE They store the rainwater in tanks in their barn which is only six or maybe eight feet above their house. In fact , to look at it , it looks almost level. Gravity takes the water from the barn to their house. The source of the water ? It comes from the roof of their barn.
There is a fellow in Arizona that collects rainwater. His land is very flat. He collects the rainwater from the roof of his house. And now he has made a collection " roof ? " about three feet above ground . But it is sloped by three or four inches. ( the pitch ) . The rainwater is collected and directed into pipes which go to the water storage tanks that are buried in the ground. In his case he does have to pump the water to his house. For him the main thing is to have a source of water.
My land has only a very slight slope to it. So my pond is slightly elevated above ground level. I use a roof system on ground level to collect rain and direct that water into the pond. My chickens use that roof for shade and shelter from hawks. Water is gravity flow to my gardens and chickens. The pond is replenished every time it rains. Or even with a heavy dew .
Give your situation some thought. Brainstorm some ideas. One or more of them may work. If you have a slope you are already a step ahead. Now devise a way to collect and store rainwater.

First thing is leveling out a way to get onto the property lol cutting trees down and planning! These are great tips and will be making notes of them for the future, thanks again!

When you were driving with Joel that reminded me of my cousins in WV they call it ridge running lol we would go berry picking and ginsinging❤️

just a response to his comment about figuring out a way to prevent the landscape from getting drier each year. We are constantly destroying plants which provide shade to the ground which keeps the soil moist and prevents the loss of soil. wouldn't more efforts of replacing the trees and vegetation we are destroying just restore the moisture in the landscape and improve the ecosystem all while trapping and collecting more water? just some thoughts im not very smart or knowledgable on agriculture and irrigation.

Mankind needs the acreage, it rips trees out in the Amazon rain forest at a rate of minimum of 3 billion trees a year.. Man needs the space to grow food, and put domesticated animals, plus housing.. I agree with you and the gentleman n this video,, we are crazy.. We are blundering this earth to a point of No return.. When in fact we should be enriching this earth.. But Mankind never, ever learns..
Well, we don't have a lot of beavers these days to build all the ponds they'd be building. And of course, planting more cover crops, hedgerows, and trees would be a good help in restoring the soil's water. Allowing livestock to stimulate plant growth also keeps more water in the soil.
Soil organic matter (OM) is a key component of increasing water holding capacity within the soil, which decreases need for watering and can have direct impact on groundwater levels. Joel talks about it at length in a number of videos. His grazing method increases OM. Check out the Savory Institute and White Oak Pastures Down in GA to learn more. It’s easy to fixate in the rainforest, but reality is you can make a noticeable effect in your own ecosystem before you will in that ecosystem. Not trying to downplay the issue, just instead focus on what the average landowner and person in the US can do now.

One of the first things to understand is that weather patterns tend to flow from west to east
The moisture ( humidity ) rising from the Amazon basin tends to form the rainfall for Africa. So removing millions of trees in the Amazon Basin changes the amount of rainfall for Africa. So , why are the trees being removed in the Amazon Basin ? It is mostly to provide grazing for beef. But , the former forest land is not good for growing grasses. It will only grow good grass for about three to four years. And then you need new forest land again for growing grass. So , more trees are cut down. It takes so much time for the trees to grow that the former forest land will not recover . In the meantime , Africa becomes drier and drier from lack of rain. More and more land becomes desert. A self defeating cycle.
