Jon Batiste just adds class and substance to late night that the other bands of late night TV can't top. I love Questlove, The Roots, you name it, but I think Jon Batiste was the perfect fit for Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
John is one of the nicest guys, a down home southern boy, who’s mama raised him right. Always good natured with people. Just a cool young man and artist.
@@KandiKlover So true! That first note was even in key!! I love when people comment on my old comments because it brings me back to these glorious videos from years ago. I laughed so hard again. Thank you.
He keeps saying things and Stephen ignores him like when you crack a joke in a group and no one laughs lmao. People are just uncomfortable because it's awkward. It's like when you see someone fail on stage at a talent show and you feel angry at them for forcing you to experience second-hand embarrassment.
I've not yet heard of anyone complaining about Jon's mic on nor about his comments. There's nothing annoying about Jon, so to those that you've heard about complaining, ... just because everyone has an opinion, doesn't mean everyone wants to hear "your" opinion. ;-) I agree, "Just chill and enjoy the show".
Something that was never on my bucket list was to see Stephen Colbert go down on a Trumpet. I had no idea what I was missing, and now I'll never be able to unsee it.
Having done improvised comedy for 5 years....you can't beat how Colbert gets the feel of what he needs to do to crown the moment beyond just "haha" to Awesomeness!
Okay. The other few comments about the trumpet were HILARIOUS, but now I'm crying real tears from laughter!!! Had I seen this three years ago, martin_e, moments after you posted it, you would have won the internet that day..., in my world, since I just now saw this video and then read your comment, you've won the internet today too.
Stephen, I love you. You're so silly. I really like John Batiste. I've seen a number of his videos and he's very talented. Thanks for adding new and fresh talent.
Honestly, if Stephen hadn't played trumpet much before this, that was pretty damn good playing once he finally got around to it. I get the feeling he's played before though.
+Geoff B It's a bit hard to make out with the saxophone in the background, but he did play like 10 notes there. Pretty sure you can learn that in a few hours. And the band improvised around that.
Conto I've tried playing trombone out of nowhere, after about 10 years playing viola. I could barely get a note out, because of how tight the embouchure was--on trombone. Tuba was fine, after an hour on didgeridoo. Maybe it was just me. I dunno. I just find it incredible how anyone can play trumpet at all after less than a day's effort, let alone do so decently.
+Geoff B I remember hearing in an interview with him and his wife that back in Stephen's days at Second City, he had to take on a part that required him to play some sort of horn, and he only had a few days to learn it, and he also used his skills on the instrument to serenade his wife outside her window back when they were still dating. I'm gonna go see if I can find it... edit: th-cam.com/video/QOmsvZZ3f10/w-d-xo.html
If you're talking about the blowing itself, I played saxophone when I was young and yeah it was pretty hard to get a sound out of a trumpet. But if you meant the music itself there were a lot of sour sounding notes to me, but the rest of the band carried him. I don't want to sound pretentious or anything, I was just listening really closely on purpose
Stephen Colbert, you got a remember the time that Jack White came on the show and they went and recorded a 45 right then on the spot. And sold it. It was really good. And I still have it I haven't even opened the packaging it came in. Stephen is rather cool in his own strange and odd way.
+Adam Johnson Yes. People don't seem to remember what the bandleader is there for. The bandleader is there not just to do the music and lead the band. The bandleader is there to help the jokes, help when the jokes don't go over so well, help the host by providing someone to play off of. This goes back to Doc on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Jon isn't the best at banter, but I'll give him some time. Maybe he'll get better at it.
This year my high school jazz band actually performed at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and we had the honor of visiting and even playing at NOCCA. The entire trip to New Orleans was just amazing.
Yet another Jon Batiste and this one dances. You are so alive, so exciting to follow your career and see you open each new door. I loved this one! And still play Jen's Blues often.
Things I know exactly what he’s saying had the honor of being taught by a Saint Aug alumni Dr Morris Lawrence. As a kid my father would take me down Bourbon st. Get an ice cream and just walk up and down the street taking in the music. Jazz is the ultimate communion between musicians and fans. The more the give them more you back. It’s a shared experience. Unique to that place in time
like what Stephen has done to this show bringing Jon Batiste was one of his best decision, keep the raw music going this kid is talented
Yessss
Won an Oscar
You were spot on!
I concur!
this aged like fine wine
Jon Batiste just adds class and substance to late night that the other bands of late night TV can't top. I love Questlove, The Roots, you name it, but I think Jon Batiste was the perfect fit for Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
I wish I could love this comment. I completely agree! Jon is Da Man.
He's just so cool and so smooth!
He's a musical genius!
Jon is so patient with Stephen. He is a saint!
You can see the friendship and admiration between Jon and Stephen. Both are masters in their arts
I love melodica
the expression on the band guys' faces everytime he's about to play is classic
Steven and Jon Batiste together are ENTERTAINING AS HELL!
if they did a comedy movie i would watch it!!!!
Congratulations Jon Batiste 👏🏾 🙌🏾 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 on your Grammy wins ...well deserved!
the trumpet had to join a support group afterwards
I'm dying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
CrzyLion: I agree
ahahahahaha! It sure did!
i nearly pissed myself when Stephen violated that trumpet
I think it ‘twas welcomed
Me too! The saxophonist deserves a medal for being able and laugh simultaneously!
The looks on their faces, omg
For sure, I woke up my partner when that happened because I lost my shit watching this in bed. 🤦🏻♂️😆
If your a fan of dissonance, we're There!
Extremely funny and heartfelt. Stephen shows late-night what's what.
Love the way he says yeaaaahhhh!
this killed me - just found this, 3+yrs later, hilarious - and boy, those players, they are REALLY class!
The more I watch the more I appreciate Stephen ans Jon's chemistry and humor
John is one of the nicest guys, a down home southern boy, who’s mama raised him right. Always good natured with people. Just a cool young man and artist.
omg I'm dying... watching the sax player's and the drummer's expressions lmaoooo. I think we all jazzed a little, Stephen!!!
I’m surprised he managed to get a sound out at all as a new player.
@@KandiKlover So true! That first note was even in key!! I love when people comment on my old comments because it brings me back to these glorious videos from years ago. I laughed so hard again. Thank you.
Seriously Idk why people think leaving Jon's mic on is such a big deal. It's not even that annoying...just chill and enjoy the show.
We live in a world of entitlement.
i love his comments
Ardent Wisteria I quite like it
He keeps saying things and Stephen ignores him like when you crack a joke in a group and no one laughs lmao. People are just uncomfortable because it's awkward. Colbert is so freaking hilarious!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 him “playing” the trumpet
I like John and the band on the show, they add an authentic feeling to the show
"I think I might have jazzed a little. Something came out." LMAO
Stephen is terrific. It's respected that he respects Jon and his music. Great choice SC. Love your show ❤
Something that was never on my bucket list was to see Stephen Colbert go down on a Trumpet. I had no idea what I was missing, and now I'll never be able to unsee it.
More of Jon Batist please! With love from Québec Canada, A!
Colbert is a such gracious man.
Pretty funny! I love him licking his lips for the trumpet!! Thank you for brightening my day.
Having done improvised comedy for 5 years....you can't beat how Colbert gets the feel of what he needs to do to crown the moment beyond just "haha" to Awesomeness!
5:06 The sax player be like seeing deeptrumpet for the first time.
+spinvalve His expression says "Oh, that's an interesting technique!"
+spinvalve hahahahahah
+spinvalve sweet catch... Comedians beget comedians :)
+spinvalve you shou've watched the drummer's facial expression... more epic.
The drummer looked like his brain short-circuted 😂
He almost made that trumpet jazz in his mouth.
+martinaee GENIUS
FUCKING GENIUS
h no
lmao
+martinaee lol

Why am I only now seeing this precious segment? Jon & Stephen need to go to another music city and repeat this!!
Stephen, I love you. You're so silly. I really like John Batiste. I've seen a number of his videos and he's very talented. Thanks for adding new and fresh talent.
I'm ashamed for watching what he did to that trumpet. this is the best skit I've seen all year
Good guy Stephen Colbert....
Jon Batiste is awesome!! An incredible talent and human being
Steven seems to be afraid of the trumpet. He fears he will blow it....
GET OUT. xD
Lol 😆.
Seeing these two together just makes me happy.
Stephen, you trumpet-tease
Jon is a National Treasure and brings joy wherever he is 💫✨❤
Honestly, if Stephen hadn't played trumpet much before this, that was pretty damn good playing once he finally got around to it.

It was the baritone horn. So yes, he does at least know how to make sounds on a brass instrument.
2:05 solid dig at Jon's monologue reactions!
The look on the drummer face when Stephen started playing. LOL 🤣
😂😂😂 jons expressions were everything in this clip .
We need more of this. NOW!
wondering how W. Marsalis would react to that! awesome! Colbert is hilarious - Batiste is a musical genius.
Jon’s band is just the best! 🎶🎵😍
Stephen Colbert, you got a remember the time that Jack White came on the show and they went and recorded a 45 right then on the spot. And sold it. It was really good. And I still have it I haven't even opened the packaging it came in. Stephen is rather cool in his own strange and odd way.
That was amazing how you taught Stephen Colbert about Jazz music cousin
4:08 "uuh got a trumpet"
ooh boy, this is going to get interesting.
5:08
I've got to turn the screen away, children avert your eyes.
These are clearly two very good friends.
honestly one of my favourite segments of the show
All the people saying to turn his mic off don't remember Kevin Ubanks from the Tonight Show
+Adam Johnson Or Paul Shaffer lol. HRAH HRAH HRAH

I Can't Even Remember The Last Time I Choke/ Laughed Puked But I DO Know It was With You... Needed This Again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤮😭😂
LMAO! I have a new found love for Stephen
HAHAHA, this is exactly what I needed to get this day going. Hilarious to watch the rest of the bandmates too!
Fell outta bed laughing! Thank you!
This absolutely killed me hahaha
This year my high school jazz band actually performed at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and we had the honor of visiting and even playing at NOCCA. The entire trip to New Orleans was just amazing.
Love that Jon won 5 Grammy’s!
4:46 Jon's expression.. XD
I love this show
LOVE THIS MAN…..JON BATISTE ❤️❤️❤️
Yet another Jon Batiste and this one dances. You are so alive, so exciting to follow your career and see you open each new door. I loved this one! And still play Jen's Blues often.
that jazz hands bit! loved it

Jazz is the ultimate communion between musicians and fans. The more the give them more you back. It’s a shared experience. Unique to that place in time
Jon must be the most incredibly beautiful human being.
YAAAAAASSSS!
I love you Stephen Colbert! You are so amazingly funny!
Jazz will never go away.
OMG!! The "Jazz Hips" made me spit out my pomegranate juice! LOL
I love high school jazz bands and seeing that generation enjoying the genre and having fun with it
Loved this bit. Gotta practice my "jazz hands. "
I think Mr. Batiste's musical knowledge goes much, much deeper than Stephen can say.
@4:24s; Omg, I want this song!
The many expressions of Jon Baptiste: Yeah...! Yeah. Yeah? Yeah...? Yeah... Yeeeah. Yeah...! Yeeeeeah...?
the trumpet thing is such an accurate prediction tho. Everything else is also so spot on lmaoaooaoaoa
haha.. my son plays the Trumpet since High School and IT doesn't look that difficult! Lol ;) Colbert is always a pleasure to watch! #JonBatiste
6:35 Look at Mr. Casual on the far right :)
it's January 24, 2021 -- does anyone else notice how much stephen colbert has become more a jazzy human since this episode in february 2016
Jon Batiste and Staying Human is playing at the Hollywood Bowl over the summer!
This was so, so funny 😂😂
As a sax player in marching band, jazz band, and symphonic band, this killed me 😂😂😂
Someone should write fanfic of Stephen and that trumpet😁 #Profoundbond
Excellent young man.
There's nothing wrong with this going on. It's just funny as hell they're loving it.
love it when you do segments on music
Freddy Mercury Jr. voyeuristically watching deep trumpet. Never thought I'd see that.
+Brenda R *Freddie
+Connor Ridge actually his full name was fredward
Farrokh Bulsara
Thanks for the good laugh !!
i watch this video just to hear Jon saying -YEAAAAAAHHH BABY !!!-
The drummer looked slightly alarmed/shocked there at the end haha
A6FootMidget he couldn't believe Steven got that sound out of that fucking horn
Who knew? Stephen "Ornette Coleman" Colbert ;o)...as always Jon Batiste pure cool cat class
Can we please take a minute to appreciate this sax solo?
Stephen's jazz hands is LOVE.
Yaaaaaas!
Okay those jazz hands are what just killed me lmao!!!
Awesome. Loving it. All that "Jazz".. wow!!!!!
Genius.
Those yeah’s were spot on.
I like SC because he's open to trying new things. He's funny too.
2:10, Jon couldn't hold back the laughter
I love Stephen's suit. White suits may not be the best for all occasions, but I wish he would wear darker colored shirts more often. Looks great!
Sadly, I think it'll be a New Orleans only thing.
Let's all recognize the amazing effort from the sax player trying to "follow"(disguise!) the horrible trompet sound from stephen! :)
Pretty sure that's Eddie Barbash! He's an amazing saxophonist!
Steven Colbert is such a tease!
Love Batiste!!!!! :D
sitting here thinking "if he doesn't blow that fucking horn I'm going to go crazy"!!!
