  • I got some action on HF today, I only took a few clips of it and put it into a video. The screen and sound of this radio are just amazing. The camera will never do it justice.

    They're nice little radios. I bought one of the late model 991's (no more blown finals from bad factory bias setting) prior to the 991A's hitting the store. I'm just at the 1-year mark with my 991. It doesn't have a real-time waterfall, so I use an SDRplay along with a DXE RTR-1A to make up for it. :-) If your 991A treats you as nice as my 991 has treated me, you'll be a happy camper. Mic gain out of the box seems a bit high from reports I'd received. So I backed it off from 50 to the 40-45 range. Also, get in there and play with the 3 band parametric on SSB. Don't use the "Proc" function. Sounds too robotic. And with the factory USB port...FT8 is a piece of cake, as are the other digital modes.

      Folks, the issue with "blown finals" was that an original version of firmware caused the tuner to do dumb things. This could cause the finals to fail. So, if you don't use the internal tuner, there won't be an issue with the finals. And, if you upgrade the firmware, the tuner works fine, and won't hurt the finals.

    The biggest debate for me is FT991a, or 7300? I feel like you get a lot more radio for the money with the FT991A. 2M sideband alone seems really appealing. The only thing the 7300 does better in my opinion without ever owning either is the waterfall. The refresh rate on the 991A's screen is not the best, but I have seen people connect them to computers and that seems to help with the refresh rate problem.

    The gigaparts site says the md-100A8X will not work on mobile radios due to difference in impedance . Also did you need an adapter to fit the mic to the 991a? Reason I'm asking is because I am definitely getting this radio and would like to have a desk mic.

    • @mistermeanor968
      @mistermeanor968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Md200 is best mic for this radio or m100. The supplied lead should have the telephone style plug on and will just plug directly imnto radio. On the rear of the microphone both 8pin and telephone style plug is fitted to cater for any kind of plug. If you already own an ft991a then just unplug your fist mic at the base and plug into rear of desk mic .

    Eric, I know you did this video two years ago, from the date of this post. But, if you still have the 991A, would you consider making another video of the waterfall display?
    I've seen videos of the Icom rigs that sport a waterfall display. I don't know if it is a feature on the Icom's but, their waterfall display, seems way finer, displaying the signals. Don't know either if it is a matter of present noise, while making the video, but, looking at this video and the waterfall display, there didn't seem to be enough peaking? for me to clearly see and tune to an active signal.
    Call me a scope head, but, that 991A way of displaying signals on a waterfall, it's nothing like what I've seen on the Icom's. I'm a technician, looking to upgrade to general. The Yaesu appeals to me as it does Fusion/C4FM, which I can currently use as a technician. Not too crazy about getting an Icom that can do DSTAR, though.
    Thanks.
    K4HPD.

    Just curious as to why the receive audio sounds so muted in this and other FT-991A videos? Is the speaker system inadequate for this transceiver,or is this the limitations of the camera recording ?

      @@sixsix4025: I own one now.The audio speaker system is the only flaw I can find with mine,but I do like the CW QSK on my Icom transceivers a bit better than those found on Yaesu Amateur Radio products.

    I am thinking of purchasing this radio but I have heard they have an issue with the finals, along with an issue with turning on the actual radio itself. Do you know if Yaesu has fixed this issue?

    • @K4MJV
      @K4MJV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue with the finals was with the non "a" version and it was resolved before the "a" version was released. Not sure what the other issue you heard about is but I have never had an issue turning on the radio.

    The FT991A I have when turning on the DNR Digital noise reduction setting 1thru 15 voice signals change to very basses sounding and the operators sound like they are under water, also with the noise blanker set to on, NB level adjustments setting 7thru 10 the voice signal are very distorted, default level is 5, the last firmware update for this radio was in 2016,Yaesu needs to fix these bugs and maybe other problems/setting I have not found at this time, nice video about the radio but a new owner needs to test drive this radio first before putting out $$$ then you see some of the problems it has and then more of these radios will be listed for sale on QTH for around $900.00 Posted 22 Mar 2019

    The resolution on the waterfall is horrid. The IC-7300 is much nicer and more like a real spectrum scope/waterfall.

      @richardg2360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      IC-7300 is HF/50 MHz only.The FT-991A is HF/50MHz, VHF, UHF, C4FM, WiresX. Not a good comparison.

      How would one DX without finding a signal and keying up?

    • @exKC2HMN
      @exKC2HMN 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you find (Or see?) an active frequency with a QSO in progress, QSY to an unused adjacent (As close as practicable.) frequency, reduce power, and tune up. Tuning up directly on top of the DX, or an in-progress QSO is bad practice.

    • @mikesimpson7748

      I think what he is saying, is shift slightly off frequency before you tune and then shift back to frequency as to not disrupt communication

    • @tommyd22277
      @tommyd22277 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my Extra license and have been an operator for years. Obviously you don't key in on their conversation, I thought that was implied, but just finding and tuning in on the signal I see no problem with that. Re-read the initial comment. Thanks
