I use a different pattern, but I use your technique. The combo is fantastic. I really prefer your technique. I also didn't do the elastic around the ears as most of my family wears glasses. Instead, I used paracord. I folded the edges over at the ends to create a "tunnel". I then threaded the cord through both ends of the mask and tied the cord together. This way it is adjustable in size and it goes over the head and around the back of the head. Works great. Combo, but I like your lining and the actual technique the most. Thank you so much for this. It does take quite a long time for me to make a single mask, but it is so worth it. Your liner is the best way and my mask has not fallen apart after about 35 washes in hot water.
Fabulous! I have made about 30 for myself, family, and a nursing unit and I am about to make 30 more.
Thank you!!
☺️☺️🥰🥰👍👍🙏
I realize that normal sewing protocol would have you press that center seam open to make the fabric lay beautifully, but I think it would be better to press to one side. Otherwise, you are creating openings all along that center seam, where particulates (virus, in this case) can easily pass through. Just a thought!
I think the idea is that you will put the N95 (or some similar) filter into the mask? Then later, throw out the filter and wash/disinfect the mask. BUT, I do see your logic in what you're saying...I just think it will be stiff on the side of the fold. If that doesn't bother the person wearing it, I think it's a great idea.

Ae PooiM - thanks for this pattern. Easy to copy and to use.
Thank you for sharing! I made one also, unfortunately it is too large for me. So I expect anyone tell me the size of paper to draw another sketch for S/M size mask... 12x14,5 cm was too big. So maybe 11x13,5 cm would be OK? Not too small? I have no opportunity to print the pattern it to make sure...
In Hong Kong if you have no mask you cannot get into a bus, see dr., or work. Every there needs you wearing a mask! We need it! THX
🥰☺️🥰☺️
A few clarifications from a Healthcare Provider: true HEPA filter masks need an exhalation valve otherwise you are rebreathing your own CO2. HEPA masks have an activated carbon layer with the 5 required layers and MUST fit tightly around the whole face.
What we are making is masks that have opening on the sides and top that allow us to breath out but if you add a HEPA FILTER inside it may make it difficult for people with asthma or other breathing issues to exhale. We can only do our best to minimize the risk by covering to protect others!
Thank you for the fantastic patterns and video with the best sewing directions I have ever seen! I am making them for family as we speak.
Thanks, Jane. I was pretty much aware of this but thanks for affirming. I have Type 2 Diabetes and Innerstitial Lung Disease (NSIP) and would feel a little safer with a mask if I do have go out. I have checked and can obtain some filtering fabric/product at Amazon, but it wouldn't arrive until late April/early May. I've also seen you can use coffee filters. I know this isn't perfect but it may be better than nothing.
I've looked at many videos and agree with you about this being a great pattern with clear instructions.
Hope you and your family keep safe through this crisis.
If you are breathing in air from the top and sides, it defeats the purpose of using a mask. I have heard a paper towel insert would also work.
Gloria Wyble I really hope they listen to your comment.
Guys keep calm over the pins,
The fabric already has tons of holes in it because it is woven, that's why there's a need for a filter, and knit fabric has even bigger holes, besides when the sewing needle begins to sew the fabric together it makes a hole. But get this after you dry/iron the fabric the fibers should move back into place. Please keep in mind that wearing something is better than nothing.
Thank you Gretchen Jewel! Was in the process of gathering materials to create masks and God lead me to ur post. Saved me money and from damaging someone's lungs. Thank you so much for this crucial info😉!
Thank you for posting this. On a related note, existing face masks can be treated with polyethelyneamine and or catechin, an African plant, to create an effective viral blocking mask; Here are some selected citations;
"Studies published by Tiliket et al. and Catel-Ferreira et al. in 2015 demonstrated a cellulose based material for airborne virus filtration in which a low-cost non-woven cellulose material (Kimwipes) were chemically modified by coating them with polyethylenimine (PEI) or grafting in an antiviral agent; catechin."
"The filtration efficiency of the modified filter media was first tested on aerosolized T4D viruses (Enterobacteria phage T4, Doermann’s strain T4D). Then the treated filter was inserted inside a commercial medical mask in place of its cellulose layer and the reconstructed mask was challenged with TD4 aerosols to evaluate its virus removal efficiency."
"Both treatments significantly improved the virus capture factor (ratio of upstream to downstream PFU contents) of KW cellulose wipes and of reconstructed commercial masks when compared to original masks and to masks reconstructed with untreated wipes."
Tiliket, Ghania & Ladam, Guy & Nguyen, Trong & Lebrun, Laurent. (2016) published "Polyethylenimine surface layer for enhanced virus immobilization on cellulose." Search for that article online.
Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a polycation, which is readily adsorbed by the cellulose matrix from a 0.1% w/v solution in NaCl 0.2 M (ca. 100 ng cm−2). Further PEI adsorption steps at higher PEI concentrations induce a linear growth of the PEI films, suggesting that free adsorption sites still exist after the initial adsorption. The adsorbed PEI chains are resistant to variations of the ionic strength up to NaCl 1 M.
"Promisingly, the adsorption of T4D bacteriophages are *15-fold more efficient* onto the PEI-treated fabric, compared to the native regenerated cellulose films, as measured by QCM-D.
This confirms the strong affinity between the negatively charged viruses and PEI, even at low PEI concentration, probably governed by strong electrostatic attractive interactions.
This result explains the remarkable improvement of the affinity of medical masks for virus droplets when one of their cellulose layers was changed by two-PEI-functionalized cellulose-based filters."
Polyethylenimine is commercially available.
This should be of interest to DIY mask makers.
I bought a virus blocking filter at Walmart . It is a 3M Filtrete furnace filter. The purple wrapper is the one that is rated to block viruses. It was about $15 US dollars for a fan folded 20x25 filter. Once I opened it up and spread it out it is over 8 feet long.
that's a fantastic tip! thanks
I cant find the filter that you used. Could you please be more specific.
Free of fiberglass right?
Is there any fiberglass in the 3M Filter?
@@marthahumphrey3849 I called the company at 1800-388-3458 and she said they use no chemicals and no fiberglass. I have been wearing the masks using the filters and i am having no problems.
Thanks for posting this! I hope you don’t mind a tip. Use fabric from heating unit allergy filters for the middle of the mask. Look for the ALLERGY filters at the hardware store that say it blocks viruses.
DON'T USE PINS!
Pins make holes small enough for the virus to get through.
There's no fabric with holes small enough to block viruses. The face masks that prevent the virus get through are very specific ones that people in healthcare should use after certain training.
This ones are so if you are sick don't infect others with fluids.
@@MsCaesalpinia shes talking about the merv 16 ac filters which can be used to make masks which would block virus and particles especially the purple ones that are rated 15000. As long as theres a nose bridge wire to adjust & the mask seals/fits tightly around all sides n the face it would stand up to the virus effectively

Seen a lot of masks, but this one is the best, thanks for the pattern. Health to you. Be well!! :)
You girls need to sharpen your pins!! You can stick them in bars of soap if you have no sawdust pin cushion. Buying new ones may have become too expensive so like all sewing tools they need cleaning and sharping. Hope this helps you to pin things together with just one stab!
I have a sawdust pincoushin my frandmother made in the 1980's. It's the best thing ever... I don't, however, like digging lost needles out of it. ☺
You don't want to use pins at all when making these masks. Pinholes not good in the masks.

This was the best tutorial I saw. I wish I could just pay you though, lots of work.

Where do you live because I am planning to make this because I have a sewing machine
Nice 👍 👍👍
Most required for present day situations
I love the shape of the mask and insert pocket. It is my understanding pinning the material creates holes in the fabric mask which may not be safe.
If you pop it into the dryer the fibers 'fix' the holes. Cotton already has holes. Which is why a filter or other layering is good
Wow I looked online for 4 days to find the perfect one for me and this is it 👍👍
☺️🥰☺️🥰
great instructions, show me without talking, THANK you. i like that your pattern has all the sizes. studies out in the last couple of days show that the blue disposable shop rags are about the best filter and CAN be laundered (but i wouldn't put through the dryer) at least 2-3 times. The HEPA filters seem like a good idea, but same studies showing they can be hard to breath through. know wat the filter is made of, some have fibers that can be lung irritant. Remember, wash you mask daily. wash your hands after you take your mask off!
I would be very hesitant to make any thing that had the possibility of causing irritation.
The last thing you want to do is make yourself weak in case you catch the virus. I bought hepa vacuum bags but now think I may pass on making them.
barb f Do you mean the paper or fabric shop rags?
The paper ones! That come in a roll
What country are you in? Are you talking about paper shopping bags??

You are good with your hands.
Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, we need a lot of courage and we need a lot of resilience after that, and we will fall down before we stand up… What really matters is the silence of the night in our conscience, when we are alone. We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.

Thank u for the pattern. I made it for my kids. It is very useful. I subcribed this channel.

I love your videos!
Elastic is cutting the back of their ears. Better to use ties. ❤️
My husband bought me a mask that has some kind of knit material for the ears. It reminds me a little of the material used for the pot holders you make on the looms, only slightly thicker. The mask is a soft cloth - double layer and it is made of a soft fabric as well, kind of like a t-shirt material only softer and tighter weave. So, if someone needs elastic around the ears instead of elastic which is hard to find, try to find a stretchy material.
So far the best I've seen
🥰☺️🥰☺️
I’ve made three. Your directions are great! I’m using Merv 11 furnace filter with the metal peeled off to use as the filter.
🥰☺️🥰☺️
I printed the patterns out and cut each one. Then, I followed the video to design the pattern and measured. The video looks like it's showing how to make the Large size. Proceeding to make it, but using serger to cut out some stitching, clipping the curve and top stitching. Like the other viewer shared, the fewer pokes with the needle into the fabric the better. I agree with her. Maybe don't need top stitching in some spots when using serger if you have one.....and possibly trying to use rolled hem feature of serger instead of straight serging on long seams.
I made one so far. My user said the elastic needs a little more added. I made the large for a women who i guessed wears a L or XL.
Did you try to make smaller one? I made one also, unfortunately it is too large for me. So I expect anyone tell me the size of paper to draw another sketch for S/M size mask... 12x14,5 cm was too big. So maybe 11x13,5 cm would be OK? Not too small? I saw the pattern in comments, but I have no opportunity to print it to make sure.
@@Agutuke Hi, you will need to do trial and error. If you have a computer, you could try to display the print file and measure the differences between sizes and adjust when you redraw.

Would dry swiffer pads work as a filter?
They recommend gauze or non woven cotton. Also, for better protection the medical drapes for surgical tools since it blocks moisture. Pinterest right now has many diy tutorials and what materials make good filters
Patricia G. Davis, A materials engineer on the Open Source Covid19 Facebook group recommends the dry Swiffer pads for the middle layer as I recall. They are water resistant, breathable, and negatively charged - which means the virus particles are not attracted to it. That group is growing so fast I was unable to find the original post.
