In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a blank made with coloured plywood into a baseball bat to celebrate independence day. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.

I grew up in an age where we were allowed to use a wood lathe in middle school wood shop class. I still have the bat that I made. Miss them days.

These are all skills that need to be reintroduced back into our schools. Sadly it's one of the 1st programs to get cut out of school budgets.

There’s something relaxing about watching woodworking videos that so can’t accurately describe.
I can’t even whittle a stick, but watching someone turn hunks of wood or other materials into beautiful things is just so relaxing to me.

@@JackMackWoodturning I certainly have and I’m always impressed at you being able to turn any material you work with into something surprisingly sturdy yet visually appealing.

@@JackMackWoodturning I do, actually. It’s likely due to the colors appealing to me greatly, but my favorites involve those with paper (even one fabric-related one if I recall correctly) and a bamboo nightlight.

Yeah, you definitely would NOT be able to use this bat for Baseball...or even Tee-ball. Would break after a couple of good hits lol.

When I took Wood 🪵 Shop for Mother's Day I made a Napkin Holder for my Mom and she kept it up on a shelf and only would use it for Special Occasion's like Thanksgiving 🦃 or Christmas 🎄.

Don’t see many people with their hand on the work piece while it’s spinning (for safety reasons I guess ) but I kinda like it , gives you a real sense of how fast the piece is spinning and how the finish is coming up since you can’t really see it. Nice job

@@JackMackWoodturning yes. I made one in high school wood shop. I actually have a good wood shop. Most of my work has been furniture and scroll work. Now I’m 61 and retired and am learning the lathe all over again. And you my friend are one of the best. Love your work.

Now I’m very curious how this design would perform in an actual baseball setting. Also curious if any consideration was given to making the knob out of ply as well?
She strikes a ball very well indeed but is not intended for use. This is a decorative piece. I felt ply “knob” would have made the piece look sloppy and unconsidered, 3s is always a good rule for design, be it amount of colour or division of area.
Pretty cool. The weight would be a determining factor of this bat.

Was that epoxy used to glue the birch ply onto the bat? Very slow setting it seems as it would catalyze in the cup during that time.
Yeah.. the open time on this particular resin is 40 mins which was more than enough time to to the glue up
