As an American born in Pennsylvania and living here most of my life in all regions of this country I really appreciate your commentary. I have cousins in Manchester and I lived for a time in France so I follow France 24 in French and LBC and other British news outlets because the world matters. MAGA here and the Tories where you are are holding us back and endangering humanity. Keep up your fine work, sir! 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 Slava Ukraina 🇺🇦

The 3 big reasons young people aren't having kids are 1. The financial pressures 2. Not wanting to pay the motherhood penalty (partly because of the financial pressures) and 3. Environmental pessimism.
Also fertility rates are a misnomer. The women are still as fertile they are choosing to not have as many children, if any at all.

I'm terrified of the election. What has happened to my country? This is the 11th Presidential election I've voted in and I don't recognize either political party anymore. Nothing of elections has been "normal" since 2000. Right wing media told so many lies so often that "alternate facts" became acceptable. No child was left behind, even if he couldn't read. And here we are.

Spain never voted to install Franco. Franco was allowed to remain a dictator because he had the support of the financial and cultural elites in Spain, the Spanish Catholic Church and the U.S. And the parts of Spain that benefited most from his economic policies were Catalonia and the Basque Country, where local seed money was available to create the likea of Seat or Talgo. Dali loved Franco, Samaranch was a minister in a Franco government and later head of the IOC and poor people in Spain (everywhere minus Madrid, Catalonia and Euskadi) went to work in the factories of Bilbao and Barcelona, because there was no investment in their own part of the country.

On the kids front I think there are some converging factors. I remember in the late 90s when the feminist movement took off and they were telling women they could have it "all" or have kids later in life I knew a lot of women who went to travel or try for a career or freeze their eggs even then later on never got around to it and were too old. Even the ones who should have had early 20s were having late 30s. This is why too the groups like East Indians grow in numbers because they have kids at 20 and lots of them were 30 and on their 5th or 6th so if you aren't even having a couple by 25 or even any till late 30s you aren't producing like previous generations.

These Trump = Nazis comparisons are becoming tiresome and regarding the question what does it mean for the UK? - well again who cares what a has-been country with a standard of living now comparable to Slovenia and continuing for second world status thinks anyway as Seri Lavrov correctly pointed out a few years ago "Britain is a little island that no-one pays much attention to anymore" - ouch !

No. It is very much a racial insult because it doesn’t deserve the dignity of just letting it be what is it and letting her be who she is. It was meant to be degrading, as if she assumes any culture or race.

We worked a lot harder back then and went without things that today’s generation aren’t prepared to do simple

Went to work walking distance from your home and finished at 5pm paid overtime and healthy pension. A factory worker could buy a house, things that are luxury today you had as standard.

@@infosuge Yeah, I bought this house in 2004, almost 20 years ago to the day. $450k. I earned $100k in my corporate job. Now the house is about triple the price. There is no way I could earn $300k today, and certainly not back when I was 33. Given that housing is the main cost for most people, the median-house-price vs median-salary ratio is very relevant. People my age didn't know how lucky we were.

What a waste of time this discussion is , it is naïve to think that UK can have much independent will, UK will do exactly as what is ordered by US.
