Make a Wizards Pendulum Clock

    This is a tutorial showing you how to make a pendulum clock. We keep it simple and it doesn't keep actual time but it does show phases of the moon as it runs. Fun project that uses foam board. And you learn about how a pendulum clock works and why it makes that tick-tock sound.
    With this project you actually make a simple pendulum clock without having to make all those gears. This one uses an escapement and a single gear to progress the phases of the moon.
    The template for this project with all the parts is on my website right here:
    stormthecastle....
    About escapements and pendulum clocks.
    Galileo invented the first pendulum clock in 1642 but didn't build one. Christiian Huygens built the first working pendulum clock in 1656. A wide variety of escapements have been invented and designed. The type we use in this tutorial is called a single pin escapement. It is a very simple configuration and it was invented by Charles MacDowell in 1851.
    Want to learn more about Galileo, escapements and pendulum clocks? I have more right here:

    That's amazing. I can see that being an instant conversation starter for someone entering a crafter's lair. I like how it just uses some wooden dowels and foam board as the base materials. Great job.

    +epicfantasy , what is the tps/m (ticks per second/minute of this clock? If it is appropriately 1tps, it shouldn't be that hard to add a catch pin on the main wheel to drive a minute wheel, which could catch an hour wheel should it?

    I notice you don't place templates near an edge to save the largest area of foam for other pieces or projects. Is it just not worth the time or is foam board too cheap to bother?

    • @epicfantasy
      @epicfantasy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +nintendolunchbox Great point. I buy a lot of foamboard. I should be more frugal with it. But generally I tend to favor whatever is best for the camera angles.

    Awesome project! It looks great, and it really seems to work! I would have liked to see it running an actual clock, but I understand that it would then have to be really precise, and be made form metal or some other thing.
    I did wonder how you set it up? You tie the string with the counterweight, and then how does it start moving? Do you curl it in the stick?
    I would love it if you made a sword from Dark Souls. Maybe the Greatsword of Astoria? Or a Dragon Crest Shield!
