Oh gosh I had such a bad reading slump in 2020 when my husband was bed bound with covid for 2 months during lockdown, so scary and difficult to get into reading when your mind and your heart are filled with sad/scary/despair emotions. I found my way back in was light reads, being kind to myself by dipping in and out of books and removing pressure. Audios are great, like you said! The Crazy Rich Asians trilogy was one that took me out from myself and our context. But sometimes also it's okay to take a break. Big hug Charlie!xx
Have been through times like this with grief and illness and Charlie just be kind to yourself. Your body will let you know when you are ready to be reading more again. Take care xx
With hindsight it’s quite unrealistic to go from two books a month the last two months to thinking I could jump back in and read all the Booker books. I just get frustrated with myself. I know you are right it will come with time. Thank you Brian ❤️
Ah Charlie, I feel so sad for you. It’s absolutely natural to be struggling to do something so closely linked to your recent loss, your grief is still so fresh. Whatever you choose to do is the right decision for you. When I have experienced bereavement I’ve tended to go for books that explore loss, like Mitch Albom’s Five People You Meet In Heaven, or something funny to change the mood (John Boyne’s The Echo Chamber springs to mind). One day at a time ❤❤
Things that can work for me when my reading is slumpy is rereading an old favourite or reading short stories. And anything plotty/ page turning works for me. But like others have said try not to worry about not feeling like reading, it will come back and the books will still be there 😊📚
We all have ups and downs with our reading and there has been a time when I have been in the mood to get rid of all my books too! It does come and go sometimes. Have you thought about maybe rereading some books you love? I also think there is nothing wrong with taking a break from reading all together for a bit -- as your love of reading is definitely connected to your memory and thoughts of Alice as well. I feel like it is part of grieving as well.
I started to find my reading groove again whilst away so hopefully as long as try and balance everything it should all be ok❤️ Thank you for being so lovely.
Hi Charlie. I'm sorry that you are experiencing this difficulty. Your video does resonate with me. When I first retired, after teaching English for 39 years, I found that I had ALL the time in the world to read and I was COMPLETELY UNABLE to concentrate on reading. There were so many terrible things going on in the district where I had spent most of my career, and I was hearing horrible things every day from my friends. I could not shut off the internal monologue/dialogue inside my head about all of this really stressful stuff. I couldn't read. It actually was audio books, as I followed along with the actual text of books, that did finally get me out of my own head and back into reading. So yes, what you are doing does resonate with me. And I also discovered booktube, and I started reading things outside of my normal, regular genres. That helped enormously too. I hope things pick up for you soon. 🥰
@@CharlieBrookReads It absolutely will get better with time. You've have had some very sad things happen, and you have a lot of stressors right now. Be kind to yourself. And give yourself a break. ❤
Your relationship with Alice revolved around reading, so it's normal that you are trying to avoid that at the moment. I only knew her as a viewer and have had a hard time enjoying reading much of anything for many weeks. I'm now reading the most ridiculous fantasy and paranormal romance (romance and any kind of relationship story are normally the very last thing I would ever consider reading - lol) as a means of escape. Treat yourself with love and give yourself time to adapt. You may find that you enjoy types of books you've never before read. Sending hugs❤❤!
That’s awful, Charlie! I’m so sorry. I can’t give you advice from personal experience because that hasn’t happened to me, not a day in my life. But I’m sure reading will come back to you, since you’re such a big reader! ❤
I regularly say I hate reading and am never going to read again 😂😂 I usually focus on some non-fiction and just read it really slowly until i fancy something else again. hope you're doing ok, maybe those short books will help. xx Sian xx
I found it very difficult to read after my Mum died. There were so many books we shared, I missed telephoning her to chat about some great book I was reading and I just cried when I read. You will get your mojo back. Big books are good, as you can put them down, and when you pick them up again you still know the characters. Sending hugs.
Hello Charlie, I have been where you are now. Stress, emotional turmoil, etc. have all interfered with my ability to concentrate and enjoy reading. My lovely Charlie, don't be hard on yourself. I think some of your trouble finding joy in reading is a natural process of your grieving process. It is going to take some time. 💕💕 When I have trouble reading, I read Picture Books. The art and stories help my mood. Shorter books helped. Be gently with yourself. It is perfectly fine if you read 2 books a month or even 1. Don't force anything or feel badly. It's ok. 🦋🙋🏻♀️💕💕 Sending so much love , Charlie. XXOO
Best to go with the flow and not worry about the amount , just how much your'e enjoying it, find a good narrator and listen. I often read romance when I'm slumpy, or stressed. I used to read a lot of it when the kids were small and I wasn't sleeping, I think we can put too much stress on ourselves, I'm not reading the right books or not enough reading but in times of stress, I try and remember it's fine.
I'm sorry Charlie. I have definitely experienced this. Something that helps me is children's book. I always find them a comfort and a good distraction. I'll usually go to the library and get a stack of picture books to bring home. I love how the illustrations and the simple stories have this ability to ground me in stressful times. Sometimes graphic novels work too, as long as the subject matter isn't too heavy. It's ok if nothing speaks to you. You'll find your way back to books.
Grief can take all the joy and color out of life. The shock of losing someone as young as Alice makes it even more difficult. You can get back to reading on your own timetable.
@@CharlieBrookReads I lost my sister when I was 24 years old. It about broke me when it happened. Grief can take longer than you think it should, but you will get to the other side.
I have definitely been here. I find it is when life is busy and my brain is overstimulated with information and I am focusing on that. I don’t have the capacity to enjoy the reading, so I stop reading. Audiobooks are a good choice for me. Alice would be encouraging you to do a different crafty thing to help you relax and not worry about the reading. We are here for you 🥰

You are not alone! I’ve been leaning into ‘not reading’ rather than beating myself up about it. I’m putting books down temporarily and/or dnf’ing at a ridiculous rate. I stopped adding things to Goodreads and storygraph (I was trying to keep up with both like an idiot). I’ve now started adding only things I finish otherwise my currently reading shelf would be ridiculous. It’s been getting easier for me these past few weeks but mainly because I leant into being ok with not reading and I’m also working on the principle that I need to be captivated otherwise I won’t want to pick up my current read so if I start something and it’s not pulling me in straight away , then it’s a dnf (in some cases dnfy as I recognise it’s my mood and not necessarily the book) but I just want to be totally captivated. Katie’s book captivated me, Sparrow has currently captivated me. A couple of children’s books have and some picture books. But I’ve got tons of books I’ve started and dnf’d or half way done. You’ll get there. My biggest bit of advice would be avoid the booker but that’s not practical for you 😉 😂
My poor Charlie. You know I’m the opposite and I read more but I’m finding it harder to love books that I’m reading at the moment. Sending hugs 💜💜💜💜 xxxx
I’m sorry to hear you are struggling right now. I found myself in a reading slump last month after breaking my leg and needing surgery while on vacation with my children. I finally had all the time in the world to read, but I couldn’t concentrate on anything. After starting and DNFing a few books and consuming far too much booktube in between, I decided to try reading some lighter, easier audiobooks. It was what worked for me! My favourite and the one I’d recommend most is Sandwich- Catherine Newman. It’s a short, easy heartwarming page turner about a woman who is part of the “sandwich generation” on vacation with her young adult children and her aging parents, and all the life changes she’s going through in this new phase of life, including menopause and what it is doing to her body and mind. Is it the best book I’ve ever read? No, but it was very enjoyable and was what I needed to bring me out of my slump. Hopefully you are back to doing what you love soon!
Thank you Katriana. How are you doing now? Breaking your leg sounds awful!! I have taken note of your recommendation. Sending you loads of love too ❤️😘❤️

I've definitely gone through periods like this, sometimes as short as a few days, others much more sustained. For me, I believe it's when real life has taken up too much space in a negative way in my brain; grief, anger, anxiety and stress. My brain won't allow me to sustain concentration no matter how good the book may be. I always think watching things is different, because even if my brain defaults to the real life thing, the tv/video is plodding along anyway, so it draws me back in, whereas if I've actively looked away from the words, they won't be so forceful in enticing me back.
Grief comes for all of us in different ways and if reading doesn’t work for you right now, that’s okay! Don’t force it, step away and do other things and reading will come back when you’re ready ❤️

And I've gone to my old favourites and re read Anne Tyler and Joanna Trollope, easy, comfortable old friends. How about poetry?
