In light of all the criticism the show has received, this is what it really boils down to. Ultimately, this AGAIN is really Disney's doing. The people between Headland and Iger who could have, SHOULD have caught the MANY failings of the show before it cast should all be fired, along with Headland and Iger themselves. $180 freakin' million dollars. Inexcusable.
Yep. Or irony. It's one thing to tell a bad story. It's another thing to undo your own narrative.
She really doesn't grasp morality. There's a new batch of young adults just like her. Trying to explain that a neglectful parent is bad, but your hero slaughtering masses for their hurt feelings is literal evil is like screaming at a wall.
This is exactly the problem - she is not even close to a writer. I just finished a first book by a writer who struggled with writing relationships and how to portray them the with the mystery elements. It was more worthy of being turned into a series than this.
@chasehedges6775 Basic story structure. Setup and payoff. Episode 3 introduces the witches chant and episode 7 the vergence which is more important to the story. It's not a twists it's a u-turn.

So Anakin Skywalker got groomed and manipulated by Emperor Palpatine into betraying the Jedi and going to the Dark Side. As Darth Vader, he brought about galactic genocide, slaughtered children, choked the woman he loved into unconsciousness when she tried to stop him, he turned against his best friend, he lost his limbs, he got burned alive by lava and left on a hellish planet to rot away like burning trash, only to be rescued by the very man that used him, and was forced to be on life-support inside a black armor suit for the rest of his existence. He blew up entire planets full of innocent people, killed the rebels in charge of stealing the plans for the Death Star, continued killing dozens of people, Force-strangled one of his own henchmen, killed his former best friend in front of his own son Luke, sliced off said son's hand and revealed seconds later that he was his father, and continued doing the Empire's dirty work until Luke convinced him to go back to the side of good. When Palpatine tried to goad Luke into turning to the dark side, all while forcing him watch his own friends die, Luke refused to give in to his negative emotions until Vader provoked him by threatening to go after his sister Leia. Vader was defeated by Luke, but even after everything he had done, Luke STILL refused to kill his own father, prompting Palpatine to try to kill Luke himself only for Vader to redeem himself at the last moments of his life, killing the Emperor even while he was spitting Force lightning out of his fingers, electrocuting himself in the process.
Despite Palpatine's manipulations and his horrific actions as Darth Vader, the dude ended up dying as Anakin Skywalker.
There is nothing about the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker that is "positive corruption". There is nothing positive about the Dark Side of the Force. It's like calling the One Ring "positive corruption". It's like a drug, addicting and seductive (and not in the sexual way like Headland foolishly misinterpreted it as). It slowly eats away at you and corrupts you, turning you against the people you would normally love, and transforming you physically and mentally into the very worst shell of yourself, and all while lying to you that THAT is your true self and who you're meant to be, and those that are trying to stop you from giving in to the dark side are only hindering you.
So to see Leslye Headland glorifying and romanticizing corruption itself is just disturbing.
I bet if Osha and Mae had been two brothers, while Smilo Ren had been a woman, it wouldn't be considered a "positive corruption arc" to her, but "toxic masculinity".

Even Kotoe 2 does this with the Sith. We see how the dark side completely eroded the masters, Darth Nihilus is just a hungry entity with no purpose, Darth Sion's body nearly destroyed, held together only cause of his will. Traya was betrayed and her sight taken away from her.

Being a Jedi is the equivalent of being an adult who is in control of their emotions. That was the whole point of Luke's journey. Disney never understood Star Wars.

No wonder these people hate JK Rowling, she epitomized the nature of true evil in the very first Harry Potter she wrote with a single sentence by Voldemort that these "progressives" affirm almost VERBATIM: "There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it!" They are everything they accuse the world outside of themselves of being; THEY ARE THE BADDIES, they've adorned themselves in an ideological uniform that might just as well have literal "little pictures of skulls on them". The reason why they see villainy and oppression everywhere they look is because that is ALL they believe in, all they see in the mirror and in their dreams, it's all they've got to give some sense of meaning to their lives (a meaning derived purely through negation of everything). Progressivism is nothing more than the praxis of existential nihilism, they are blinded by their faithless resentment and conviction against an existence they cannot justify as being worthy of the suffering intrinsic to the human condition. At the end of the day, it's important to remember the deeper moral of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: the corruption of the Good by an evil is only a temporary thing, and as the very consequence of it's singular commitment to power as an end-in-itself evil must always inevitably devour itself.
This THISSSS, tolkien work is a master peice cause besides the writing and the amazing movies you could tell each step, each word was written with love and care in it, making you feel like your not just a outsider looking in but like your seeing it from the perspective of the charaters, each "pointless" detail is really a good one cause, well their on a adventure and we're seeing it through their eyes, so of course we may see something thats basically pointless but its detail adds to it, a simple stick is a stick but write it right then its still a stick but now i wanna know why as long as you dont wind bag it atleast

That head nod when he says "like my father before me" is a wonderful detail I didn't notice until now. Even in the face of certain death, having thrown away his only defense against whatever the Emperor would throw at him next, Luke loved his father and made sure to slip it in in what might have been his last moment before a horrible death.
Oh how far we've come
A little correction: this doesn't happen when you don't understand Star Wars, this happens when yoyu don't understand yourself and confuse a job that you are supposed to do with your psychotherapy. A _lot_ of things that Headland inserted, or thinks she did, into the Acolyte are fairly disturbing, to the point that it makes me feel sorry for her - though not enough to excuse the atrocious writing.
She enabled a man to abuse women for her own power. It's no wonder she's mentally ill.
There are people that can engage with their trauma and show it to the world in thoughtful and moving ways, like hayao miyazaki, who said all his past movies were for/about his mother, who died when he was young. Can you say the same about this show? How can an artist help other people understand themselves or feel shared humanity when they're not involving the trauma and art with some level of honesty? She wanted to put her issues into the show but didn't do the work, and it shows. Why subject yourself to that and not go all the way, further more, why use corporate media to do it? Now her very personal pain is going to mocked relentlessly. It is sad, but the more I think about it, the less it makes sense.
Headland already said before the show premiered that she went to KK with an entirely different script. But then KK supposedly said to her "you've written me a Star Wars script. Now go an write me a Headland script."
So this trash is the Headland script: her own personal story, played out in what her twisted mind sees as the Star Wars universe.
I really don't understand why they didn't maintain that casting choice. The EU touched on the Empire being prejudiced against non-human races and women - it wouldn't be too difficult to slip homophobia in there too. Plus I suspect Palpatine is so evil he wouldn't respect people's pronoun choices.
It's boggles my mind. WHY Headland? I wonder how long she knew Kathleen Kennedy for her to just get her own show, based on her own problems with her family and her strained relationship with her sister... when she should've gone to therapy instead. It's so bizarre... she's not even known for being this talented writer or even director. People who say stuff like, "Well, it's because she worked for Weinstein, she kept her mouth shut and is bring rewarded, etc." Are starting to sound right lol. I can't get over choosing some random asshole like her to have all of this control and create her own show that's set in the SW world but doesn't actually revolve around the ideas, lore and basis of SW, just says it does. Instead she just hitched her poorly written shitty creation to SW. She should've done a totally stand alone story but then she wouldn't have gotten $180 million! That's another thing, what an insanely huge budget. It's just... none of it makes any sense! I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone lmfao.

The pronoun language is so incredibly divisive because it quite literally divides people into different groups of people based on how they feel at the time. There is a kid's show from well over a decade ago called "Slug Terra". The heroes were forced to turn to the dark side (in this case use "Dark Water" in order to turn their Slugs into Evil Goules) in order for them to literally have a fighting chance. That's what a "positive corruption arc" would look like....
There are also several shows and franchises that use similar tactics that force heroes to experience "corruption" in order to force themselves to grow and understand what it is that they are fighting. Digimon had Dark Digivolution, which was important to Tai's character arch. And I'm sure many of us can think of situations similar to this. More recently (although still over a decade ago, the main character in Yugioh Arc-V was forced to go through corruption multiple times. Also Spoilers, sorry. He had to go through it in order for the true villain of the series to even appear, SO THAT everyone could finally defeat him forever instead of simply delaying his inevitable return.)
That all said, while these could arguably be examples of "positive corruption arcs".... NONE OF THIS IS THIS BS WE SEE IN "Star Wars".

The reason that these people keep siding with the villains. Is because they are villains. Weather they realise it or not. And it sounds like Leslye is a classic example of a villain who does NOT see themselves as a villain.
Who sees themselves as a villain? Everybody *thinks* they're doing the right thing even when they're not. People are very good at justifying their actions after the fact and not seeing any difference.

A well written villain has to be the hero of their own story. There are no heroes in Disney Star Wars because the writers don't know what a 'hero' is. This is also why there are so thoroughly incapable of 'deconstructing' anything, they simply do not comprehend that which they're attempting to rebuild.
When someone boasts in article's she loves the thing, then every decision they make for story destroys the thing....just stop, lady!

I hate this (actual) corruption of this universe. Star Wars, the embodiment of Joseph Campbell's incredible life's work and influence on Lucas, the gold standard of storytelling, and we get a postmodernist, nihilistic misery of a "positive corruption arc" because villains are so sympathetic and gray.
Make it stop. We don't need 2D characters and nuance is fine, but I'm sick of the "we must subvert and deconstruct every single thing" It's overdone now.
The problem I have with this show is that it actually *fails* as a deconstruction - if anything, it shows us that the main character is living in her own world all the while the author is trying really hard to convince the audience that the main character’s interpretation of the world is the actual world when it’s clearly not the case!
KOTOR II did a great job deconstructing the “Star Wars” universe because the author knew the lore very well and played the tropes of that universe so straight that it almost hurt (which is the point - to confront the audience with the deeper implications of of a universe that functions as the result of an impersonal entity with a will of its own driving it) - the author of “Disney Wars: The Acolyte” doesn’t understand the lore well enough to deconstruct it and apparently doesn’t understand the basics of storytelling…

@@Karackal Ok - I think that seeing some really bad attempts at deconstruction has turned you off to the whole idea, but the flip-side of the equation is that a good deconstruction can lead to revolutions within a genre as authors become more aware of what they are doing and why!

Leslie doesn’t just fail to understand SW. it’s kinda obvious she doesn’t understand difference between good and evil.
Osha joined hands with Quimir who kills innocent people (apothecary in second episode), and murders Sol who saved her life twice in previous two days (frozen planet, attack by flying lightsaber).
And Leslie thinks we should care for those two. We can care for bad people in movies, but for that you should make us empathise with them. And that is another thing Leslie has problems with. We know Oshas mother was stupid enough to kill herself with Jedi, we know other mother is just evil, we know witches were dark side users - so we don’t care about them and cannot justify murder of Sol. And there was no journey of self discovery or corruption so that we see her as tragic figure, like Anakin. No, she is just murderer, and it’s disturbing that someone thinks we should like her.

Why didn't you also mention Quimir killing all those Jedi, including Osha's friends? How about him trying to kill both Osha and Mei? She is actually horny for a ruthless killer while the killer did nothing to redeem himself. Even freaking Twilight knew to make the main lust-targets be only dangerous by their nature, not their intent.

Osha was literally all about the Light Side of the Force and was tracking Qymir to kill him when his defenses were down - until she saw Qymir's fine (?) ass; then she embraced the Dark Side.

"Positive corruption" so like a sacrifice for the greater good? Like if a person had to surrender to a dark power or evil entity, and while it will save the world that person is lost forever? Cause I don't think the writers for star wars now are smart enough to write anything like that.
Technically kotor specifically kotor 2 already covered this subject of people not being able to tell the difference between jedi and sith. To the average joe of star wars, they are the same thing, people who use this power called the force but have different philosophies on how to use it. This was mainly caused because in the last hundred or so years, every major war that left scars throughout the galaxy had been caused by jedi that fell to the dark side that started with Exar Kun, Revan and Malak, then Sith Triumvirate. People were scared and tired of the constant wars that from their eyes happened due to the jedi not being to either control themselves or couldn't prevent corruption. This is why the other name for the latter half is called the Jedi Civil War.

I love those 2 games and after Reven, Kreia is my favourite character. There's a line where she asks the exile "Did Revan trully fall.... or did he take up the mantel of Dark Lord in order to stop the destruction of the galaxy"
She also asks valid questions criticising the Jedi also; "If when so many Jedi fall, they almost destroy the entire galaxy, then does the fault lie in the Jedi teachings or the masters themselves.
They made the Jedi look like incompetent idiots rather than trying to figure out a way to make them seem like the "bad guy" if that's what they were going for
Neither of the twins have any clear motivation and flip flop on their decisions so does any one actually care why she joined the sith or what happens next??
I can think of this happening only one time in a story. It was called SlugTera. The Slugs (Litteral Ammo with personalities) couldn't use their powers while in "dark realm", unless they became Goules. (Essentially evil corrupted Slugs). They volunteered to do this in order for the heroes to have a fighting chance to escape said dark realm (while knowing full well that one of their allies could heal them all once they make it back to the real world and shut the portal.) They risked being corrupted forever to help save the world. Even after it was over, they were all scolded for doing what they did. Told that they were unworthy for falling into temptation like that, but I'm starting to digress.
This was the closest thing to a "positive corruption" and it was done by a show over 10 years OLDER than this BS. In a show made for Children, which clearly made more sense than this SLOP of BS we see/hear about in this show.

10,000 years before even the start of the High Republic was the First Great Schism. The Split between the Jedi and Dark Jedi.
The events that lead up to KOTOR is actually the aftermath of the THIRD Great Schism and the birth of the Sith Order.
It was the FOURTH Great Schism that finally killed the Old Republic and led to the Dark Age of the Republic before we even reach the High Republic and Yoda.

Yeah, the only logical way to square that circle is for an evil character to slowly be convinced to be good, without realizing it along the way. Step by step, choosing kindness, altruism and good over selfishness and evil. Justifying it to themselves, more and more lying to themselves about the reasons for what they are doing. Assuring themselves "I can stop being nice any time I want." until eventually they are forced to confront the reality that they aren't the same anymore. That they lost sight of why they were doing these things and now are too comfortable doing good for others to go back to how they lived before.
Seriously, there's room to make that paradox work.

For example, (warning this is rather crazy story, It was also a "funny story" in the words of that She Devil in The Young Turks. L'll do my best to tell it without her... crudeness.):
In Russia, a man tried to rob this convenience store. The owner of the store stopped him. We can all agree that it's a good thing that she stopped him and agree that everyone has the Right to defend themselves.... That said, the story didn't end there.
The store owner then tied him up, force fed him Viagra and "SnuSnu" him for 3 days. When the police finally saved him, the man needed surgery just so that "it" wouldn't FALL OFF.
Again Anna, told this tale as a "funny story" and she laughed about it. This actually happened to someone. We can all agree that Robbing a store is wrong AND that it deserves punishment. You can even praise the fact that this woman was able to defend herself. However, that does NOT mean we condone these Cruel Punishments and crimes done in Response to the man. He was just a thief and I'm not even sure he was even threatening her life in order to steal from her (based on how Anna told it, I mean).

Remember playing Knights of the Old Republic, and constantly being tempted to the Dark Side, wether through “insta-win” dialogue options, or powers, and yet, you never did, (at least in the first play-through, you monsters) despite the game being probably way more easy and fun that way? Me too. It’s called having a conscience, and resisting the temptations of the dark side aka EVIL.
Was it the kinda game you could quicksave on, or make another file to try out different paths with different conversation choices? Or more like mass effect. Probably mass effect, right? Same studio?
And KOTOR whipped out a nasty whammy or two if you did go Dark. First game, your party members would revolt and most of them end up dead. There's also a cut Dark Side female only ending that might not be very "Star Wars" but it is a very bittersweet option ala Rogue One.
Thing that prevented many a Dark Side run? Your player party. They were overwhelmingly LS (and the highest LS scores weren't even on the Jedi!), and well written to the point where the player was encouraged to want to see them happy.
Of course I did dark side my first Kotor play-through. Shame on you for implying that’s where the Acolyte went wrong. That show does not understand or explode the dark-side, it just thinks it does.

Kathleen Kennedy told Headland to make "a Leslye Headland show." She wrote what she knew (from the perspective as the former assistant to Harvey Weinstein as well as being a queer woman) interspersing the "show" with elements having absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars lore, which clearly showed in the end product. She absolutely did not care one bit about Star Wars, only co-opting it because of the following (that it once had), and as a further opportunity to subvert it as "Ruin" Johnson did (who also had the blessing of Kennedy to do so).
Well , of course she doesn't understand Star Wars ! She didn't understand Star Wars when she was a kid and no one would let her play Star Wars with them , and she doesn't understand Star Wars now.

And given how she already lost one Padawan, her framing it as another Jedi falling from his tenets is likely the worst move she could have chosen.
There are ways to make intriguing villain-centered stories. You can have villains who are competent- not "and I win the fight because the script says so", but actually _competent_ , as in "these are my objectives, this is what I do to achieve them, this is how I adapt when unexpected things happen". You can invite the audience to empathize with their feelings and motivations, to understand how they might find themselves in a similar place. "The Acolyte" doesn't do that. It stumbles around like it doesn't know _what_ it wants to do, let alone how to get there.
And, yes, art _can_ be political. But "all art _is_ political" is the domain of people who need it to be so they can know whether should like or condemn it, because they have no actual taste.

The main problem is that the narrative runs on random with no foundation no consequence, no continuity and coherence, blundering through the 8 episodes.
The Jedi team is on the planet just by chance, they run into the girls by chance.
Core motivation of Sol is supposed to get a padawan, but we know nothing about the onboarding process and why it did not work out for him.
Torbin's motivation "go home" is crazy for a person who joined an intergalactic militarized police force.
The sisters are changing their relationship at random, from killing each other to hugging each other and back.
The fire was a random event.
The concept of the "power of many" is bogus decoration, whenever cooperative force use is shown, the group/two loose.
Impersonation is absurd, Mae has a large tattoo on her forehead, Osha does not - in 3D, insane amounts of plaster would have to be applied to "hide" it.
The concept of the twins being one person is never demonstrated, just there for styrofoam drama.
Head witch turning into smoke monster most likely is another "misunderstanding", might signal "readiness to negotiate" or something in their culture. Why would she attack, if she was ready to hand over Osha?
I say only one thing 10 (!) writers for 8 episodes. Someone should have coordinated this flock of chickens, but obviously no one did. Reeks of nepotism, onboard as many friends (& family, but that was another department) as you can.

George kept it very simple, though plenty fans fail to understand it: Balance of the force (and thus a healthy balance among all living things) is supremacy of the 'light side', the dark side will ALWAYS corrupt the force and disturb the balance, as it always hinders or outright destroys life. The dark side is a tool to further personal goals and fullfill pleasure-driven emotions such as greed, material and for power
You cannot have a good dark side. There are people in the star wars universe that are more moderate, like Count Dooku, who restricts his usage of the darkside, but pure full-on dark side users will always be corrupted by their own power, more visible on their appearance as it always betrays them there

There's nothing positive about Osha's corruption, to corrupt oneself on the dark side is to corrupt the living force and disturb the balance
The star wars universe is not our own, one cannot moderate and keep everything in balance and well. One cuts themselves completely from the temptations of the dark side, or they aid in the disturbance of balance
It's why the Jedi Order is so macabre and monstrous in our viewer point of view. Taking away very young children and indoctrinating them to have no emotions and forget their parents?
Monstrous in our eyes but a necessary burden these children must be educated to properly handle in-universe. Because they're the few thousands that have this power, and if they don't control their power, they will inevitably use it in links to the dark side to fullfill their base human goals, thus disturbing the balance of the force.
I always wanted an official (i.e. a show/movie rather than just in video games or comics) take on a Sith/dark side POV, but not one pandering the "good sith", I want sith, as in, bad people/people that use the force for their personal whims. Who bend it to their will and inadvertedly disturb its balance.
There was a problem with the Jedi, they WERE too set in their ways, they had grown rigid in their own dogma. But their core philosophy is inherently righteous in-universe, because their philosophy is the only road to true balance of the force.
I have issues that this core philosophy of star wars will also go way over the heads of the team supposedly making a movie on the first Jedi...it's a simple enough concept, and there's plenty of videos and documentaries out there of Lucas explaining it.
Basically, there's no yin yang in star wars. Yin is the only way for all living things to be at peace in balance, yang is the tool of those who seek to use the force as a means to reach any and every personal goal and nevermind their personal natural limitations, be it from ending a rival's life, to permanently extending their own.

"I am a Jedi, like my father before me!" A single line shows *everything* you need to know to understand the entire point of the OT. If Headland and the others somehow failed to grasp that, they could have rewatched literally TWO minutes of RotJ on loop for half an hour, and things should have been clear. It is truly mind-bending.

You can tell before a show or movie even releases if it will suck by interviews with the creator. If most of it is about them and their life it’s going to suck. If they took about the lore and the all the stuff before them it has a chance. If I’m hearing about your sex life or politics I literally couldn’t care less.
