      I fell in love with a "MIRROR LENS" 3 years ago. The old Minolta AF REFLEX 500 500mm F8 Mirror lens.
      It auto-focuses "decently", it's "decently" sharp, it's got quite some vignetting, it produces donuts with any out of focus high light spots, it has quite some washed out colors ... in short IT'S FAN-TAS-TIC !
      I use it with the LA-EA4 A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter that I needed for the Sony SAL85F14Z Planar T 85mm F1.4 ZA ... and I shot thousands of photos with that TOY tele-lens ... wildlife photos while hiking (I usually take that lens and the ultra small Sony SEL35F28Z Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA), portraits in a crowd, hundreds of photos of my son and his friend on the kayak with all the glittering sunlight reflections on the waves, sunsets, moon shots ... I JUST LOVE THAT TOTALLY IMPERFECT LENS !!!

    I had a Yashica in high school and loved it. And later when I had a commercial studio I had several RB-67s and a lot of the lenses. Great workhorse cameras, knickname was roast beef since it was a big as one. For me I'd have to choose my old Minolta SRT101, a really well made camera and the lenses were pretty sharp.

    You two kids have helped me so much in deciding what to buy as a newbie to the photography world, it's insane. I love how Tony has laid out the information in the videos-that's awesome. The amount of time it must have taken to do such a meticulous job organizing it, really shows. Enjoyed the video. I carried the RB67 with lens and the M645 with lens around Yosemite during the 70's and early 80's. Good memories with good images. I still have the negatives!

    Mamiya RB67 - My all time favourite camera. It has been my workhorse from the day I bought it in 1980. It still works beautifully. The lenses are immaculate (optically) - shows all the wear and tear of use over the years but still keeps on going.

    Choosing cameras is always subjective. I enjoy your videos very much. Most of us are amateur photographers and being someone who grew up when all cameras were mechanical and many non TTL, I really learned about photography on inexpensive cameras. Those budget SLRs and lenses are now selling in auctions, online auctions and in enthusiast camera shops. I'd recommend an M42 system camera and Minoltas. Regarding TLRs many are selling now at many times their original selling prices - the Russian Lubitel camera was cheap, its price has shot up.
    A video on your favourite budget cameras of all time which are affordable to young, keen amateur photographers would be interesting.

    Just saw this video and had to add my two cents. My favorite all-time camera is a Canon T90. I bought one when the were new for around $900. This camera had the best metering system ever. I just bought another one at a camera swap meet for $150 with a 50mm 1.4. My second favorite was the Bronica ETRSi it was an extremely easy camera to use and get great pictures with.

    • @RaymondUpenieks
      @RaymondUpenieks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Canon T90 was a revolutionary camera. Ergonomics and design mixed with a feature set that became a template for the (at that time) upcoming digital revolution. Different meter modes, 5fps (if I remember correctly) LCD top display etc. Basically everything that a photographer needed in one camera. Wish I would've kept mine but it changed the camera world.

    Chelsea, Tony, I love your Yashica. My dad had a Leica M3 dating back to the late 1950's. I still have it. If I could afford a new Leica range finder, I would have bought one. His M3 worked fine for 40 years.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      bird271828 An M3, nice! You should use that thing or sell it; with a lens they go for $1500+.
      It probably needs to be serviced, though. They require pretty constant maintenance to keep the viewfinder and lens aligned.

    • @bird271828
      @bird271828 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Northrup Tony, 15 years ago the Leica service center here in the US told me they no longer service old M3's. I don't want to sell it because all our family pictures were taken with this camera. I love holding it in my hands just like Chelsea was holding the Yashica. Thank you for your reply.

    Wow, I sure do miss my 124G. I had 2 of them, but they were stolen (along with a Canon A-1 and F1n) when my apartment got broken into in the late 80s. You are spot on about the appeal of the Yashicamat 124-G! I wish you would have shown the nifty finder magnifier - really cool!!

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Zoller Oh right, I forgot about the magnifier! You kinda need it... I like that it doubled as a sport finder, because you know what a great sports camera that is :)

    The RB67 is such a beast. Really only feasible for studio but I see people carrying them around every once in a while. Same goes for the Pentax 67. I learned medium format on the RB67 so it has a special place in my heart as well. I no longer have a 6x7 but I do shoot a lot with a Bronica SQ-Ai AE (6x6) and the Hasselblad 500 Series. Built to last!

    • @mrcraggle
      @mrcraggle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love my RB67 but I just haven't used it in years but at the same time, I can't part ways with it. It's second hand too so when I was using it to shoot portraits, something would always go wrong for no particular reason. The most terrifying was when it got stuck half way when I rotated the back. I was freaking out that it wouldn't budge but then it just decided to become unstuck and I did nothing to change anything.

    can I ask, for film cameras, how do you metering films with different ISO?
    when metering, does the camera consider all films as certain default ISO? 100/ 400?
    e.g. canon AE-1 metering for ILFORD delta 100 and ILFORD delta 3200? is there any formulas we should follow?
    thanks

    • @andrewford80
      @andrewford80 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You adjust the camera to meter for specific speeds. There's usually a dial that lets you do this. On the AE-1 you lift the dial and turn it to adjust the ISO. Newer 35mm cameras used DX coding to read information from the film canister automatically. The AE-1 may not do this as it's pretty old.

  • @neilpiper9889

    I ran a wedding photography business in the 1960s using 2 Yashica mats.. Great quality with ease . 35mm is good quality with more effort. Medium format is the best way to go. I did use a Practica 35mm with a 30mm lens for casual candid shots.

    That Yashica takes very sharp images. Even after buying into the Hasselblad system (this is back in the 90s) I still used the Yashica quite often. That tiny leaf shutter generates practically no camera shake. Put it on a tripod and the images the "cheap" Yashica can make are very impressive.
    As for the Mamiya we used to call it the "R Beast" and for good reason! :)

    Tell you something you can do with a TLR: you can run one of the old style mechanical cable releases, 5 foot long one or so, from the camera, up the sleeve nearest the camera, then across your back and down the other sleeve (wearing a jacket, of course. Say you have the camera hanging on a strap near your left side, you drop your left hand to where it is nowhere near the camera, then you fire the shutter with the release in the palm of your right hand. Use hyperfocal and a small aperture so there is no focusing. People don't know you have taken a picture, as TLRs are very quiet, due to having no mirror. You are holding nothing up to your eye, either. Of course, you still have to advance the film after each shot, but you can do that whenever. Fast film works best, so you can have both the depth of field (no need to focus) and shutter speed (people in motion) needed.

  • @malachy1847

    What gets me regarding those talking of the difficulty of manual focusing is that very few folk go for that 'Old School' tried and trusted method of using / checking the graduations on the lens and setting up their hyper focal length via the F stop / Foot scales thus assuring that the subject is properly in focus rather than spending time eyeballing same through the lens the old method is much faster system...plus carry a tape measure in your pocket!!!

      I never ever sale any camera that I have in my disposal. I have a collection of old film cameras, Olympus OM something that I used for 18 years. Nikon FG. and Zenit - E who made in the USSR from the age of the dinosaurs. It has armed heavy weight body who probably designed to survive the harsh conditions there.

    My favourite camera of the 70's & 80's is the Nikon F3, Hasselblad 500cm/500ELX, Mamiya RB67/RZ67 and Olympus OM1n. Love that RB67 Manual camera I owned them all

    Tony and Chelsea, hi. I currently using a canon T5i+Tamron 150-600 (for wildlife photography) and sometimes it's just soft or the focus isn't right specialy in low light situation. I want make a upgrade, so you suggest i buy a 7D mII or a used 7D+400mm 5.6 (both are the same price). I live in Brazil so most of the time i take pictures of birds (rarely in flight) and sometimes i use a tripod.

    Great compilation of cameras and lenses. This is pretty cool.
    Have you tried any Pentacon Praktica lenses? Vintage ones... if so what donyou think about them for film.

    I used 2 Yashica mats when I was a professional wedding photographer in the UK back in the 1960s.
    They were reliable but I would rather have had a couple of Rolleiflex 2.8f cameras with Schneider Xenotar lenses
    I use a Nikon D300s with a Nikon 300mm f4 lens and a 1.4 multiplier now.
    Both bought together £600. Best bargains for wildlife photographers

    My favourites were my RB 67's and for 35mm Leica's my hate 6x6 format as when I learned photography we were taught too fill the frame.

    The best medium format camera I ever shot with was the Bronica GS-1 (6x7 format). It gave me results as good as when I'd shoot with my 4x5 Cambo with a Rodenstock standard focal length on each. I worked at a camera shop and shot with every camera under the sun except for Leica's.

    What do you think of the tamaron 200 to 400 mm zoom ld with 77 mmdiameter lens. Its a film lens for canon 35mm slr.
    My everyday lens is a sigma 28 to 135 aspherical zoom.5.6 macro and has 62 mm diameter lens.

    Olympus E-M10mk2 is probably the sweet spot of cost, functionality, quality and creativity. More than two decades ago I had OM1, 2, and 4 film cameras, and I guess, this camera gives the joy of its ancestors designed by legendary Yoshihisa Maitani.

    Why the 70-200mm II for portraits and not the 85mm 1.2? Do you prefer the longer focal length to the shallower DoF of the 85mm? And which do you think is sharper? Thanks.

      @TonyAndChelsea  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philip Pepe I do like the look at 200 f/2.8, but the bigger factor is the versatility of the zoom. It's really important for portrait sessions, but especially for weddings, to be able to pop between a headshot and a wider shot. It also gives you more control over the background, meaning you can work with less perfect locations.

    Talk about what affordable digital back to get for the Mamiya (2nd camera in review) and will that provide a big depth of field?

    30 years or so ago I had a Yashicamat, and a darkroom to develop and print the pictures. I purchased the whole set up second hand, enlarger, camera , and dozens of trays and things. Great fun. I think I paid maybe $200 for all.

    Why do you recommend the 400mm f5.6 over the 300mm f4 IS with a 1.4x tele on? Or when the 400mm f4 IS comes out, what about that with a tele converter on? I am considering these options, but i haven't decided which yet.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Lewis The 400 f5.6 is lighter, cheaper, and sharper.

    Love the old film cameras. I bought a Rolleicord, aboard a Navy transport ship (no taxes or tariffs) on Mediterranean patrol while serving in the Marines. Cost brand new? $39.37. Yep. My medium format of choice was the Koni-Omega rangefinder 6X7, with the rapid handle to advance the film. No blackout, sync'd at all shutter speeds, giant negative or transparency.
