Sony should make the smartphone camera in 2022 with 100MP full frame and 8K 300 fps video and 2TB m.2 ssd internal because in a camera you are not as limited to a tight space because ergonomic holding ... i would pay $2000-$2200 for it (also with usb-c that you are able to mount stuff to like a big face screen for bloggers with 2x 3.5mm balanced for in and out audio with bluetooth remote for some gnarly cinema auto focus silent lens and extended battery partnered with Tesla for the cells... a wish but a beautiful one.

  • @GordLamb
    @GordLamb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's honestly kinda mind blowing that none of the major manufacturers have figured out even seamless wifi sync. You run a service on your phone or your PC. You press one button on your phone, and a light starts blinking while you continue to use the camera as if nothing's happening. In the background, it synchronizes its photos and/or videos continuously. If you turn off the camera, it keeps going until it's finished. If it fails, the next time it connects, it continues. The code to do this isn't overly complicated.
We have "continuous upload" mode that after a bunch of awkward steps starts uploading JPGs only, semi-reliably. We have these horrible little interfaces that let us select individual photos. What we need, at *minimum* is a quiet, automatic sync mode that always works, every time, in the background. If you knew that everything you were shooting would instantly and reliably appear on your phone without any action, that'd get us half way towards having a real OS and cellular radio on the camera itself.

Okay Tony, before I make my comment, I’m one of your biggest fans. I’m a novice who looks to you for advice on anything camera related. As an aside, I have a Canon t6s and I’ve got the gear bug. I want to invest in my next level system which I would like to take me well into the coming years.
I made a pretty good living in advertising and marketing for twenty something years and went on to build a cellular network which had the largest footprint of any in the world at the time. I have 5 co-patents encompassing wireless data, one of which you may use everyday. I just wanted you to know your biggest fan is not completely off the reservation when making this comment.
The title of your video, in my opinion, should have been, “What should have been the camera of the decade”. Let’s face it, the Samsung camera, for whatever reason was a failure. It influenced nothing. Was it a great idea ahead of its time? That of course is debatable. Statistically speaking there is without question only one camera of the decade and that’s “the smartphone”. It’s really not even debatable. Today more people are becoming interested in the way their photographs look than in any time in history. I get a kick out of watching some young person hold their smart phone up, look at the screen and begin to arrange the shot. You stand over here and put your are around grandmother and on and on. Your next book should be all about cell phone photography. Launch a social media campaign to young people enticing them to want to get better taking pictures. You guys would be Superstars. Get Kylie Jenner to partner with you and BANG. Fun huh?
Sorry but, the back and forth walking in this video made me a little seasick. Keep-em coming Tony, you guys are terrific.

I was blown away from that choice. But I completely agree. Half of my time is spent uploading to cloud and dealing with that. I’m curious if you used that camera though when it came out. The question should be how long did you use it and why did you change. Plus the camera had issues. You couldn’t change the auto focus location while using evf. All of the features you say could come to fruition now if someone wrote a decent app to connect to our fancy cameras.

This. I recommended our brother/sister in-law get an X-T30 to photograph their new twins. They barely use it, they just use their phones. They don't want to have to learn how to use a camera, and phones are just better at doing stuff like auto-HDR, so you can photograph a very dark person next to a very light person without knowing how to do exposure comp. Subjectively, their phones have bigger screens, and the pictures look better when you're using them in the moment. They love it when I take photos with my gear and know-how, but they have no interest whatsoever in replicating it. Great camera of the decade pick.

I've been saying this for years now. The ability of a camera to send pictures directly to the cloud, or any near field compatible device, such as a smart phone is just a basic idea that should have been incorporated into these devices long ago as a standard feature. I can't understand how this concept got away from us. It is so simple and straightforward! It was ahead of it's time. Why Canikon/sony didn't jump on the cloud access bandwagon is beyond me. Just the concept of having an Android OS with cloud capability incorporated into a DSLR was a no brainer.
The main complaint that Tony and Co have made on professional cameras, that don't have two card slots, is that it is a complete deal breaker. I have always said that a simple interface to a cloud based, or similar near field technology, would/should become a standard feature of any "Professional grade" camera. It isn't like the technology wasn't there, or the ability to harness it to a camera would be cost prohibitive, but it just never happened for some strange reason.
In all honesty, I have never needed any backup like the two card system, until I did. I took pictures of my mother's memorial after her death, and lost the ability to access the SD card. Fortunately I had taken a lot of pictures with a different camera/lens, so I had not lost all of the memories. Just one instance is all it takes for you to become hesitant to believe that you don't need some sort of reliable backup.

good video: I like your thoughts, and particularly when combined with the "Dead Nikon" clip. On net, the photography business is simply changing. As you recall the "pundits" were predicting the Death of the Desktop Computer a couple of years back-- Tablets and iPhones we going to take over. It hasn't happened but the market simply shifted. A Desktop is the better tool for intensive work and will continue to be used in such applications. Same thing for the SLR. I've played with these mirrorless cameras but today I still prefer the optical view finder. The digital VF seems artificial to me. I'm just an old retired guy and photography is purely a hobby for me. I like to bill myself as a "Seasonal/Nature" photographer. My object is to convey the feeling of nature in photographs. I think the optical viewfiner is more sensitive to that. Oh well; just put the nickel's worth on my tab :)

    • @VisaxLP
      @VisaxLP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I love your Desktop/Tablet point! Didn't think of that.
But I think it's better to be applied to Phones Vs Cameras in general, Cameras will just stay the work beasts.
DLSM Vs DSLR is different, DLSM will technically be superior, the EVF will become high Res and lag free, to a point where you don't feel a difference.
Tablets can't become better than Desktops, obviously, but DLSMs will take over DSLRs and DSLRs will at best have an existence like analogue and vinyl.
But I think you're right, cameras are bound to stay, the market will shift, or has already, and cameras will be sorely enthusiast/professionals and losing their entry levels. And Nikon and Canon will take over again, Sony is ahead one generation technically, but everyone hates using them, eventually the technical differences between Nikon/Canon and Sony will be too small to justify the deficit in usability and ergonomics.

The ease of use, and the ability to quickly share all of my photos was paramount to sucking me into the world of photography. The problem though is that the real question is turning a camera in a 'phone wannabe' (with all that geek stuff), computation photography, and mental masturbography, is it going to turn a generation of techno addicts into photographers? Seriously?! I take it that this forum is being frequented by photographers (pro or amateurs doesn't matter for this discussion). All of us are, to a degree or another, delving into the skill of observing things as you can't photograph anything if one doesn't observe it first (thou' some do, sadly). How many here are aware that we live surrounded by people literally bending day in and day out over their mobile devices (who they use as cameras)? They resembles the proselytes of a techno-faith, almost a sect in its own right. Enough with this B.S. over gear etc etc... Tony, you're a smart guy, don't give up to the politically correct all the times! Com'on man! Things aren't better solely because more techno-oriented 7 years ahead of competition? (when instead this is only fulfilling all the flock's desires out there who are buying smartphones instead of cameras!). Yeah yeah, improvements are welcomed, but they need to SERVE the art of photogtravpy, not the other way around! Sadly we see the same rubbish in movies (once called films) where special effects have taken over instead of serving the script.

    I love my Samsung NX1
So innovative and still after 5 years on top of hardware and features.
Before i had canon and i upgraded every year to the new model because they think they allways only can give one small piece of the big cake.
Since i have samsung i didnt had to upgrade or to change because they are not really significiant improvements that would make sense to change.
Thx Tony for telling the truth about the camera industry. I remenbered how all Canon and Nikon Fans talked bad about the Samsung NX1 because they were not open to new innovations. For example the USB Charging which was turned so bad allthough it‘s so great to have. To charge in the car or with powerbank. Who can do that even 5 years after.
I remember when i was on redcarpet and all canon/nikon photographher looked at my samsung camera and „laugh“ and then i started shoot with 15 fps just by looking on the screen and then after they looked with open mouth 😮
I also remembered at this time what all photographer were saying and still say that it doesnt matter wich camera you have if you know how to photograph.
Obviously they only say that if you have at least canon / nikon or sony
I still dont know why no camera manufacture dont put smartphone technologie in those cameras
Canon / Nikon and Sony still have so terribly bad menu compared to the 5 years old Samsung NX1. But i guess its personal taste

I think all the Samsung NX cameras were absolutely revolutionary. I recently told a few people that I'd be surprised if we didnt see a Sim card in a camera within the next 2 years. I had no idea that had already been done. I owned an NX300M and can remember sharing photos from the camera after I took them. It was awesome. I think all of the camera manufacturers breathed a sigh of relief when Samsung walked away. In the end, it was the camera that showed us what was possible instead of leading the way and hopefully, that will be changing soon.

I always thought that Samsung NX1 was an amazing camera, and I was really disappointed when Samsung quit making cameras. but even though the Samsung should've been the most influential camera of the decade. it wasn't, the Sony a7 camera was. because the Sony A7 was really the start of full frame mirrorless. and because of that camera, Sony made the future generations leading up to the A7rlll and A9 witch are really the cameras that made Nikon and Canon realize that they could no longer put off going mirrorless. so the Sony A7 camera was responsible for a major change in the entire camera industry. not the Samsung NX1. So I think the Sony A7 is the camera of the decade. But I really wish that Samsung would come back with new NX2 and also a full frame version of the NX. ,,,,,, all the companies in 2020 should be making there cameras like the NX. Sony still hasn't given us a fully functional touch screen, enjoyed this video.

Cool vid....I would add that there is a very important feature that u left out for the Samsung camera. Not only could it do wireless tethering, but I believe it would allow for 8 devices to be connected to it wirelessly. The only reason why I did not get one is because I opted for the Sony A7rii because I wanted a full frame camera.
I am surprised that none of the original Sony alpha series made your list. The Sony alpha series initial cameras made Canon and Nikon recognize a new competitor. Not only that, I believe Canon and Nikon have introduced mirrorless cameras as part of their product line because of the introduction of the Sony alpha cameras. Sooooo...the original alpha series should have been considered for the honorable mention list because of their influence on the industry at a level that was gamechanging and even causing photographer internet beefs that were quite entertaining, but sad, but still funny. Lol....
The Samsung camera was so significant that I am actually holding out on upgrading my Sony A7rii until likely the A7rV. The logic. I have not seen an A7riv wireless tethering tutorial video that demonstrates that it can do what the Samsung NX could do with its wireless tethering technology.
Just my two cents and I am a pixel chaser....lol..So... I do find the 60 plus pixels on the A7riv interesting because I have dreams of framing large prints, buuuuuuuut I really want that wireless tethering feature so I am okay with waiting until I finish shooting with my a7rii. ..
And your year count rant was funny.....lol...

With film, if you wanted a picture you had to have a camera. But with digital, a decent point-and-shoot style camera (with more capability than the film version) can be added to a phone. Now when you carry your phone you are also carrying a very good point-n-shoot camera at the same time. Since most people were only interested in taking pictures to share with friends and family, which a point-and-shoot film camera did extremely well, they now have a device that does double duty - the phone. The loss of this segment means there are very few of these cameras sold now and the ones still around are not going to be replaced. I think there are limits to computational photography as the user has little control of the program but for a point-and-shoot camera (phone) it probably makes more sense were the user is not interested in photography itself, just give them a nice, pretty picture.
Professional and advanced amateur photographers were a smaller segment of the camera market in the film days. Now with the collapse of the digital point-and-shoot camera market they are a much larger segment of the camera market. Even if the dedicated photographers are a growing group there are a few problems for camera manufacturers. Digital cameras are mechanically robust that they will last for quite some time. While larger sensor capacity and other feature are interesting options in many cases they are not sufficient improvements to get one to buy a newly released camera. The problem is cameras of the last several years have not had a true 'must have' feature that will generate sales. This tends to stretch out the time between purchasing new gear.

I would actually add the Lytro light field camera. It did broke the rules of needing to work with the exposure triangle. It captured Lumins and rendered out the scene through computation. And you can dial in the focus, shutter speed. And aperture after you take the shot. You also can simply render only something within a specific range. But the camera company was later bought out by Google and no projects were continued from it. It's also a forgotten camera as well. It's on the list for me because it teaches that not all cameras capture light and follow the same rules. There are other new ways to capture images.

not just all that but the nx1 had 15 fps with c-af, the first BSI sensor, 4:2:2 4k video, and a lot of other features. It was ridiculously ahead of its time. If they'd still develop lenses I'd never even think about using a different system.

Sorry my english..native spanish....the idea i can give for 2020's is having a lightroom style inside the camera...the posiblity of making edition tweaks while making photos...NOT AFTER take the pic....BEFORE HAND...A total RAW processor with tone, hsl, etc....and posibility to have Endless presets..instead of only "standard, vivid, portrait...."as an example....take first photo, see it, tweak highlights to minus 18...contrast to 9...darks to minus 10 and intensity to 20, even change yellow color tone and green color saturation ....Next picture shows in the lcd screen with all changes, and keep them till change it again.....

Near future prediction - Seamless physical and wireless "phone" integration with mirrorless camera bodies that feature computational photography and very high memory storage features. Longer term - "Cameras" will shoot continuously. Video and Single Image shooting will no longer be separated. Lens+sensor+battery fixtures will have snap-in phone attachments and permanent cloud storage+computation. Users just pull the snap-shot or snap-vid from the stream of footage. Computations are applied to get the best still image/stream which can be uploaded to the portal of choice.

I always wondered why no one took that camera's lead! I was hoping that was going somewhere, but I guess phones were the only things to take the lead. I'm still holding out hope for camera companies to realize the smartphone IS a camera, and that they need to revisit this and embrace it.

I found it interesting comparing the naughties to the teens. You had so many technologies back then that were good, but not quite there. I think starting with the introduction of the iphone in 2007 we saw a start of a revolution where superior tech just came out to where a new product would not only be better than previous, but would just blow away whatever was previously built. Computers, cameras, phones and even cars all benefited from this. I've seen things improve over my life time starting in the 80s, but I can't say I've seen this definitive split before. Instead of a gradual change we would see total game changing technology just seemingly drop out of the sky.
