As an Artist in the Training Aids Department, I later had the task of hand-carving a 'giant' 6' long wooden mock-up for Parris Island Training Classes! Yes, I got the chance to train with and fire a full variety of weapons, from the 1911 pistol and M16 and M60, and clear up to the 155 Howitzer... but my "Heart" belonged to the M14 ... (smile)

The summer of 1968, in the Army at Ft. Jackson, SC, the M-14 was still the standard battle rifle. During BCT, I shot expert (Boy Scout training) for the record, and this was the first thing I ever wore on my uniform.
Good on ya Mark, early March 1967 thru early July 1967, Ft. Lewis North Fort I did my Infantry BCT and AIT. Our CO offered breakfast in bed to any of his recruits who fired expert. There were 3 of us served that breakfast in bed in my 'Delta Dogs' BCT company and like you that Expert badge was the first badge pinned to my uniform. In my 75 year old brain I can still remember how that M14 felt in my hands, how it felt slung over my shoulder and how the gas power action felt and sounded, how the relatively light recoil felt as each round was sent down range. It was/is in my humble opinion (arguably I am sure) the finest, most dependable, most accurate rifle ever issued to America's soldiers.

M1GarandMan3005 Carried the M14 until my platoon was issued the M16 . No comparison in range and knock down power. Only advantage the 16 had is that it weighed alot less. Not really a good trade off.
There is a reason why we were soundly and solidly winning in Vietnam right until the large masses of M16 rifles started replacing most of the M14s in 67. It was because of a few factors, but the switching to a new rifle that was still not quite ready was a big mistake and probably one of the largest factors. Throw in the wrong powder being used in the new rounds and no cleaning kits initially and the M16 truly was a jam o magic. Many many men died face down in the mud after being killed while trying to clear a jam. Many of them would without a doubt be alive today had McNamara not switched the standard issue rifle right in the middle of the war. Every single Vet that I have spoken to that kept the M14 later in the war have all said they were envied by the Mattel soldiers that were issued the M16. One told me he would often get asked to trade. He always answered them, not only with a no, but a HELL NO! That same soldier came out without so much as a scratch. The VC that was shot, was usually shot only once, and stayed down for good. He said he never kept count of how many, but did say it was too many to bother counting.
This rifle was made for, Men! I carried the M-14 in Vietnam, as a Marine O311. Marines stacked up more VC, and North Vietnamese Regulars, than any other firearm. It was reliable, and you could take it through Hell, and it would still fire. Ask Charlie!
I have my grandfather's M1A, passed down to my father then passed down to me. Still shoots true after 59 years. (Edit) and yes it's a military issued M1A
StraightWhite Male: "yes it's a military issued M1A" Sorry, but the M1A was never a military issued rifle! The M14 was the rifle your grandfather used because the M1A is a rifle made for the civilian market, ( no provision for full auto fire) whereas the M14 was made with select fire capability. In Army Basic Training, mine was a Winchester model. Today, mine is the Springfield M1A. :o)
MY FRIEND. CIRCA 1976 TO MAY 15 1986 THE REESE BROS OWNERS SPRINFIELD ARMORY ILL. MADE AND SOLD TITLE TWO NFA M1A SELECT FIRE RIFLES EVEN MATCH VERSIONS. ALL MARKED AS M1A. AFTER 1986 THEY STILL ADVERTIZED 200 M1A's LEFT IN THE SHOTGUN NEWS. PRICES STARTED AT $695.00 U.S. THEY ALSO SOLD COUNTLESS M1A FULL AUTO's TOO BOTH MILITARY & LAW ENFOCEMENT TO THIS DAY.
The M14 was so potent that it replaced 4 other service rifles. But then was replaced itself just 10 years later. So much for potent. Still going to buy me one, though.
You will love it! I have the loaded model, walnut, with stainless barrel. Last week at a match I shot 10 rounds within a 4" circle - with iron sights at 100 yards. I hit a golf ball at that distance on the first attempt. Great rifle!
I bought 1 back during the clinton era ,loaded version , with scope mount ,sling , softcase and pelican case ,15 mags and 500 rounds of lake city ammo for $725.00 ! those were great times my friends , great times , its getting handed down to the stepson , and hes probably getting the springfield garand also .
I would seriously go check out the James river armory m1a being sold on classic firearms. The big difference is that m1a has a forged receiver and the spring fields use budget cast steel
NO WAY!!! Springfield Armory at least 1980's circa. M1ANM. Made at Mel Smith's Vally Ordinance Modern Forge & Machine Tool. I still think this platform is underrated vs ARs: can use the rifle butt for less than lethal option and the full battle rifle cartridge makes the M-1A M-14 a true DMR. In fact, its one of the few rifles where iron sights are viable past 300 meters.
My dad carried his M1all the way into Hiroshima after the surrender ... And why I own a Scout / Loaded being the best battle rifle of all time ... An American classic !
One of the finest tools built to defend this Constitutional Republic from all Tyranny Foreign and Domestic!!!! Long Live Our Constitutional Republic! Liberty or Death!!! Don't Tread On Me!!!! We the People Mean those words and We the People have the Tools to do it!!!!
I want one, but i'm afraid i don't have the money or the space for it at the moment. Plus i still need to build up ammo reserves for my AR-15 and Remington 770.
It’s a awesome rifle but it definitely did not effectively replace 4 US weapon systems as it was intended to do. In full auto it was hot garbage and all over the place not controllable like the BAR is, in close quarters it was too long and unwieldy to replace the M3 “Grease gun” or M1 Thompson. For paratroopers and rear troops that needed a smaller more portable weapon they again ran into the same problem they had caring the M1 Rifle. The M14 was a slightly lighter and much improved M1 with different internals but it was and very much still is a full frame battle rifle that now in days relegated to the role of a Designated Marksman Rifle in the Army (EBR). The M1A and M14 (I consider the same thing for all intents and purposes) is a damn fine weapon and really shines in the one role it did best, effectively modernizing the M1 and giving the US military a long range full power rifle that is capable to 800m with deadly effects on target which is well beyond the effective range of the M4 Carbine. I love my M1A NM it shoots like a dream.
I've had M1A std, Super Match, and Scout Squad. My favorite is Scout Squad - 18" barrel, handles easier than 22" std barrel, weight is reasonable, very much like picatinny rail forward of action (great location for holographic sight, red dot sight, or LER (Long Eye Relief) scope like Burris 2-7 x 32. But these days, any M1A you can get is the best one. Also, I prefer chambered in 7.62 x 51 (.308) as there's lots of milsurp ammo to be had cheaper than new mfg.
You got that right my friend!! This is the finest U.S.RIFLE We ever fielded and they can take this info to the BANK. THE BEST!!! I KNOW IT IS SO!! LT.R.W.HANSEN. U.S.NAVY SEAL TEAM SCOUT SNIPER B-4. TEAM ARMORER.
Does anyone have accurate measurements of the possible accuracy of the M1A? Preferably but not necessarily in 6.5 Creedmoor? And maybe compared to the AR-10 in 308, or the AR-15 in 224 Valkerie? What I want to know is, is an M1A accurate enough for modern high powered rifle competition? (Metal sights, 600 yards)
Back in 1966 at Paris Island you had to qualify at 500 yards so past 600 Is not a problem. Most Marines shoot expert at 500 so think about that and they all had to use the M14 , 7.62 NATO round. When the M 16’s were showed up I wouldn’t take one. My Captain said the M 16 ammo was a lot lighter and if I wanted to hump my own 7.62 ammo I could and that’s what a lot of us did. The M 16’s were getting all founded up with a little sand and some platoons got it big trouble because of it. No thanks the M 14 was my rifle and that was that.
Look up some video's from camp Perry and you will find most shooting the M1A and that's out to as much as a 1000 yards. In my case my 308 M1A standard will out shoot my Hbarrel with match trigger 308 AR10 out to 300 yards I don't have accesses to 600 yards but think the M1A would still come out on top.
Thank you. It is difficult to find any list of what gun the top competitors were shooting, but apparently some M1/M1A rifles are accurate enough. Now I just need to figure out how to shoot mine well and go to a match!
Benjamin Mcleod. I have found that in my M1A Loaded, 168 gr A-max Hornady bullets in my hand loads can achieve sub MOA accuracy at 100 yards. Of course when I do my part, if I nudge even a little it will throw my group. The rifle shoots better than me! They are picky on factory ammo and I have found that 168 to 150 gr weight bullets work the best. I love mine and would never get rid of it.

I would love to see companies like Springfield refuse to sell to law enforcement in states like California and New York. That would take real American courage and sacrifice....
Remember this JB,, it wasn't/isn't the law enforcement IN THE STREETS who dictate the politics in those liberal states. The law enforcement IN THE STREETS of those states deserve the very finest, hand carry weapon available. Politicians,, they are the problem.

Want one so bad now that I’ve fallen in love with iron sights shooting. Looks sold out everywhere right now though.
I’m going to get me one someday!!!
Same here 👍
Greatest battle rifle ever built.
You sure about that...
These men are GODS!
The M1A1 can take a life, or save your life, the choice is for the person using it, so if it you, choose wisely.
Got mine!
I have my grandfather's M1A, passed down to my father then passed down to me. Still shoots true after 59 years. (Edit) and yes it's a military issued M1A
StraightWhite Male:
"yes it's a military issued M1A"
Sorry, but the M1A was never a military issued rifle! The M14 was the rifle your grandfather used because the M1A is a rifle made for the civilian market, ( no provision for full auto fire) whereas the M14 was made with select fire capability.
In Army Basic Training, mine was a Winchester model. Today, mine is the Springfield M1A. :o)
toddy2519 thanks man, all the M1A talk messed me up lol, and yes your right. Thanks.
2022 and I wish you were still producing the NM and super match models.
The M14 was so potent that it replaced 4 other service rifles.
But then was replaced itself just 10 years later.
So much for potent.
Still going to buy me one, though.
Might have to pick one up if it’s that tough
You will love it! I have the loaded model, walnut, with stainless barrel. Last week at a match I shot 10 rounds within a 4" circle - with iron sights at 100 yards. I hit a golf ball at that distance on the first attempt. Great rifle!
It’s as tough as the M1 Grand
Wilks Barre, Penn.Mel Used the latest double die closed controlled harth method for uniform hardness and carbon distribution throughout his superior improved title two M14 Match Receiver. After the shop's persion CNC/ EDM wire guide finish work. Mel did send all match receivers directly to Nelson's. Nellie would build the entire match rifle to the latest( M21 MILITARY SPEC'S)as the Army/Navy rifle teams did. These Rifles were legendary as the strongest, hardest, most uniform mil-spec finished, NRA/DCM M14NM TITLE TWO, SELECT FIRE, VERSION M1ANM RIFLES EVER MADE. Also with the Lock-Out Drum in place for all matches. They dominated every winners circle around the world. I still have mine after 33 years. All ATF&E, NFA BRANCH, RULE'S APPLY. ! I now use my Naval Patent Crane, Ind. Marine Submersible, Adjustable Side Focus, Ten Power Seal Teams, Sniper Scope, With Advanced Joint Services BPT/SADLAK, LLC. Mounting, Navy Contract 30mm Steel Tactical Rings. The OD Sand Spec-ops cheek piece, Contract 9"-16" SLM, Pod Locked Bipod. If My Eye's are up to it. Off we go a day at my Long Range Shooters Club. I can get better than one eighth size groups of five shots at 200 meters. With Lake City M118 match LC-LR, 175GR, BTHP-FMJ, Ammo. All Day !!! ROBERT W HANSEN, SR. CEO/OWNER HANSEN BROS ARMS, INC.
I still think this platform is underrated vs ARs: can use the rifle butt for less than lethal option and the full battle rifle cartridge makes the M-1A M-14 a true DMR. In fact, its one of the few rifles where iron sights are viable past 300 meters.
I love my socom 16 with factory kryptek highlander camo.
My dad carried his M1all the way into Hiroshima after the surrender ... And why I own a Scout / Loaded being the best battle rifle of all time ... An American classic !
Ofek Siegel I'm not real sure where you think you're coming from. But that's why I specifically called it an M1 and not an M14
The M14/M1A/Ruger Mini 14 use the same basic action as the M1 Garand.
us did not adopt the m1a till 1957 , sorry , google it :)
can you tell if the problem that the M1 garand and the M14 had to jam the bolt when in contact with mud was solved in this variation?
One of the finest tools built to defend this Constitutional Republic from all Tyranny Foreign and Domestic!!!!
Long Live Our Constitutional Republic! Liberty or Death!!! Don't Tread On Me!!!! We the People Mean those words and We the People have the Tools to do it!!!!
Can you use factory hunting loads in it?
Yep
Is there a video similar to this about the Scout Squad model or Tanker?
I love mine!!!
“Everything about the m1a is a challenge”. Yup that’s why it was the shortest lived service rifle in US history.
Thee Best Video !
5⭐
Great video! What are the sources of those old bits of movie footage?
Mine will be at the FFL Jan 02, 2024. Replacement for my 1969 MCRD PI issue.
So what is the best M1A to buy?
Neither...
GOD Bless you and all your brothers Lt. Thank you for your exemplary service.
Extremely hard to find one in stock anywhere
No wonder this rifle is so expensive at starting price 1700$
I love my m1a
They make a FAL pistol, HK 308 pistol, AR15 pistol and a AK47 pistol. Why not a M1A pistol? Would sell a ton of them.
This fire will reach out past 600 yards with no problem. 308 will do just fine with the right load.
I wish I could afford a Select fire M-14!
MY OWN TITLE TWO SELECT FIRE M14NM CIRCA 1985 COST ME 1650.00. TODAY MY NELSON MATCH M14NM WALNUT STOCKED ALL USGI PRE-1964 SPRINGFIELD NATIONAL MATCH WITH A TRW MATCH BOLT. IN U.S. DOLLARS BRINGS $24000.00 TO 26500.00

Garand
Archangel stock and wood options
Ping
Let’s see a modern M1 Garand. Why pay $1300 for a surplus Grand if I could get a new Garand in 6.5 Creedmoor.
Really hope you guys consider
Rad gun guys!!!!! thx for the video
love the history on this gun!
One of my grandfather's tore his way through the South Pacific with a .30 cal M1a. To this day it holds a special place in my heart (and safe!) bc I probably wouldn't be here if he wasn't carrying one!!!! God bless Trump and the US military... even though I don't believe in god... but you get the point
After watching that one video about the M14 on the Small Arms Solutions channel, I find this commercial amusing.
Why can't I find this in the original 24" barrel
They were never in 24" that was the Garand. The M14 has always been 22".
I own one, one of my favorites in my collection. AR-15? Pfffft... give me my M1A in 7.62x51mm.
Killed a Nebraska whitetail with mine last Fall. Dropped him like a sack of rocks. Match one of these with a quality optic and you have yourself a scalpel that goes bang.
I'm gonna make it my first firearm
Man wish I could afford one
Maybe make one in 30.06 ? Think it would be a hit.
Papa T. That would be kinda counter productive seeing as how you could get a M1 Garand in .30-06.
30.06 IS 7.62, the round made for M14. Same, same.
☝️ This guy loves his SOCOM 16.
I want one
on my "to get" list... very soon...
This weapon of iron and wood... Funny I have no problem with the iron sights on an M1A
Can we still get these in 308 Winchester instead of NATO?
.308 Winchester IS 7.62 x 51 NATO - samo, samo gesampte.
@@waskawiiwabbit4465 I don't think so I'm under the impression that if you put 308 Winchester inside a 7.62x51 NATO there's a chance of case rupture
IDK what ‘civilian’ rifle means? DoD adopts weapons from the citizenry for military service.
Viking Hand Axe/Long-Knife
Pistol-Rated Shield - High-End Idiot if you don't
3" Judge Revolver
Revolving SRM12/16+1
M1A Civy BR
.....meh....na to AR-15
Fact is...I'm gonna carry a battle-rifle for battle, a SRM-12/16+1 for CQ & Tasks. Shot-Pistol for strict CCQ. & anyone who has a problem with an axe of any sort besides its efficacy is gonna have to change their mind due to a split skull.
👍
