      @@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking got ant good leads on shipping containers?

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not buy that one was just shipping. Shipping containers on island can range from $3200 to $6000 for a 40’ high cube depending on condition. 20’ containers are actually more expensive for some reason? You can get them on the mainland for much cheaper but then transporting can add up also it has to have a “seaworthiness” certificate to be able to ship to Hawaii. Here though, Big Island Containers is the place or possibly Craigslist from a private seller. Good luck 🤙🏼

    Thanks for taking the time to share your relocation costs.
    We just dropped a car off at the Port of Oakland shipping to Hilo, (kid living there now). We used Hawaii Car Transport, (Mason area drop off point). I was quoted $1,075 but because I used a credit card, it jacked the price up to $1,107. Then they tacked on and additional $95 for insurance coverage? Ouch!
    We're still contemplating a move to the Big Island in the near future. Have a full size truck, a Jeep and a quad we'd like to take plus household goods. That's a chunk of change to definitely consider but all in all I guess it's still cheaper than replacing everything in Hawaii paying imported prices.
    Thanks again. Helpful video!

      Jason Fleck I must have watched this 5 times when I first found it a year ago and watching now over and over again. We’re behind you a year and prices to ship vehicles went up $500, ($1,500) since we shipped our daughter’s. We too decided on a 20’ container to move the household goods and gardening equipment. If I could WARN your viewers in advance, DO NOT PURCHASE A CONTAINER TO SHIP!! If you do, expect major headaches, have sea-worthy certified paperwork in hand, AND pay double the costs!! Needless to say we returned the container and went with Matson to coordinate the 20’ container move to Hilo. Costs $6,955. To be fair, we live about 3 hours from Oakland Port. To save another $1,000 we opted to pack our container while the driver waits. 1st hour free once the clock starts ticking and $65/hr thereafter. Consistency in box size is key. Cheapest place selling moving boxes? WALMART. We mapped dimensions of 20’ container with tape on garage floor to be more prepare to properly load. We’re up for the one hour challenge and will update when we hit the island in a few weeks. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Very helpful.

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they did raise the price, my Wife only moved down in January and her car was $1500... yes definitely pass on buying the container mainland, but it would still be cheaper lol... 20ft containers on island are $5k and up where a 40ft starts at $3800... glad to see you got everything figured out!

    • @Debra309
      @Debra309 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Fleck you cannot believe how much it was going to cost to move our container. $3,200 to purchase what we were told was a seaworthy 20’ container. $700 to get it certified because the company we purchased it from lost the paperwork. $2,000 to truck it to Oakland Port. $5,200 to load it on the ship to Hilo Port and $1,000 to have it delivered to property. All of this plus hours of speaking to Brokers, trucking companies, and Matson personnel. With the clock ticking precious days away trying to make this work, we shifted gears and went with Matson to handle it. If I can help others planning a move out of California to the Big Island because this was one 3-week long head ache.

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well another issue with buying a container is when you get it to where your going you have to have a crane to unload it. Because the traditional method of dropping containers is with a flatbed tow truck and you can’t do that with a container full of stuff lol... I have seen a truck that off loads with mini cranes front and rear on the island but don’t know the cost or company.

    Hi Jason, I am thinking of leaving to Hawaii around December, maybe January. I have a storage with all my things and the unit is 5x5x6 and holds all my personal belongings. The things I have are not replaceable so I want them on the island. My question is, any advice on how to ship this stuff? I was also thinking that I could box them in small boxes and use regular PO mail little by little? The most heavy thing is about 40lbs, a guitar power amp. The rest is small items like couple of guitars, couple of solar panels, albums, stuff like that. NO fridges, cars, or furniture.

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mario, I wouldn’t ship them in small boxes it will cost A LOT by the time you ship everything... not sure where your located but Pasha had a service where they will come and pack everything for you and your just charged per pound. If you don’t have much stuff that’s the way to go otherwise I would just search for a freight company the size you described isn’t very big so it wouldn’t be to bad I think. A 20’ container was $6k from LA to Hilo...

    We are in the preliminary process of figuring out which direction to go with how we are going to ship our stuff to the Big Island.. Did you consider shipping your car or motorcycle with your household goods in the container or are you satisfied that you shipped them separately? We got quoted for a matson 40' around $9500 and was thinking of having our truck in there along with our household goods. Also, did you have a moving company help you load your household goods into the container? Thanks for your video and your time!

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I did consider putting vehicles in the container the issue is the containers are delivered on a trailer and unless you have access to a loading dock on both ends you cannot put vehicles in and out. The other option is have a crane or special truck that can set the container on the ground which is extra costs at both ends. Depending on your location(mainland) the city may not allow you to put a container on the street which was my situation.

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I loaded everything into the container myself. And once in Hilo you have to hire a moving company to pick up your container at the port and take it to the drop off I covered that in the video
