5:20 in GW2 the map is actually covered and you need to explore in order to see all these things you mentioned. Obviously there are web-based maps you can use to guide yourself, but if you play blindly, then you can spend weeks exploring and collecting.
I would rcommend Guild Wars 2 to people. The story is good, the community is helpful (unless you play PvP) the artstyle is nice and varied. The combat isn't unnecessarly complicated with over two dozen skills to keep track of and yet buildcrafting is complex enough to keep you entertained for a long while. Most areas of the game usually has multiple people running around and doing things, no area of the game is really "dead" so you'll always find people. The game isn't pay-to-win and everything you can buy in the Gem Store(/the cash shop) is something you can get by converting in game currency into Gems. The core game is free-to-play and the expansions are buy-to-play so you won't have to keep paying any subscriptions if you don't have time to play a lot. The game also has a horizontal progression system that makes it so that you'll never have to grind every character to the new max level or work your behind off to get the new gear with higher stats since both max level and best gear has remained the same since launch. All of this makes Guild Wars 2 a great game with good gameplay that you can play casually and not feel left behind if you for some reason have to quit for a few months.
Not completely true what you said regarding GW2. Like WoW, you need to explore the map to see what's what. But it is definitely one of the most alive worlds in the MMO genre, everywhere, every time you go on any map there's usually something happening.
I'll never get tired of Dungeon Fighter Online - just because it's beat 'em up nature mixed with customizable inputs makes it possible to play it like an MMO fighting game.
wow literally has the biggest mmo playerbase in the history of mmos to this very day, maybe your online communities should play the game before criticizing "everything about it" when anyone with a brain can very obviously come to the conclusion that it is legitimately not possible for the game to "be bad in every single way" use your brain lil bro
@puffyeato you're correct if you count the 1000s of bots, people who played for a week or less , the dead accounts, and the people who don't have a good computer to play a better game. If you're including that in the statistics then it's not vary accurate.

It has the best dungeons for gameplay (not story,thats ffxiv), most interactive raids (ffxiv is too scripted imo), and a huge rp community. Tons of things for casuals to do as well, and finally got crafting right. The only thing that sucks about wow is pvp. Just because you dont like it,doesnt mean it isnt king still. Btw every mmo has the metrics you mentioned,so that point is moot. I cant sit in limsa for 3 seconds without goldfarmer spam in my chat and people teleporting from node to node farming professions.@@Yeager559
2023 was a good year for gaming for me at least. I started ff 14 in February, then I got into Honkai star rail which I don't consider mmo, then a week ago I tried guild wars 2 free trial and on Xmas eve I caved in on the steam sale for all the dlc because I really enjoyed what I had played of gw2. Ff14 I play every single day to do some duties, sell some goods on ksrket board, go on treasure hunts, etc i think it's good to also go play a few different things you will get burned out fast if you only play 1 game all the time so it's worth diving into free trials or free mmos to see if you like it
To this day I always go back to SWTOR. I am a massive Star Wars nerd and unsurprisingly, SWTOR was my first MMO. It also happens to be the only Star Wars game, in any genre, still active that has an indepth character creator. Admittedly the MMO aspects of the game are pretty average, and many of the updates now are just updates to the Cash shop, but if you love Star Wars, each class has an 8 hour storyline in the base game thats completely free. I highly recommend it for Star wars fans that want a new flavor, especially if you've mostly been raised on Disney's new canon 😅.
I also found a very good maintained private TERA server called 'Starscape' it is very well setup and has discord, events, and all options are unlocked..
Although I no longer play it, GW2 is by far the best mmorpg i've ever played. I would highly highly recommend it especially if you don't like wow/ffxiv combat
I'm just a simple male. I wish there was a MMO with good combat, good graphics and good big boba. Also, since i'm very inclusive, big muscular dudes and fat dudes as well. Some variation for body shape tho. For males and females and physics for both. Just that. 😴
Ok very simple you have all that and more in the straight forward simple Blade and Soul and if you want a bit more challenge and open world things to do then you go to Black Desert..
Community, open world exploration, (dynamic) events, great lore, the most unique and best art design true masterpiece, great class builds, mounts, world vs world, pvp and pve almost all you could ever want from an mmo.. But if you also looking for waifu, housing, ships, and things like crafting and gathering and more action combat, BDO fills the gaps.. Easy..
So does gear matter? That was my main issue, but this was a LONG time ago. I mean MMO's are all about improving gear, and that was missing from GW back when I played. Does BDO get better? I played it and refunded it because it was so easy it was practically an auto-battler. I was told it gets challenging later, but that's what they said about Lost Ark which never got challenging, just grindy. @@SkywalkFPV
Only 4 things I think FFXIV should do that will probably cause it to overtake WOW: 1. More fluid combat system 2. Choices that matter 3. Seamless worlds 4. Fully voiced cutscenes

Judging purely by points doesn't tell the whole story. Plus many people would award the points differently. To me, the most important factor is how much FUN a game is. And given that criteria, I had the most fun in GW2.
nowadays, games have shown that they are more than just 'fun', especially with MMORPG that have more emphasis on long term character development and aren't as cathartic as a beat-em-up
Sorry, but I don't agree at all with your "best PvP games". For two reasons. 1. I don't find the BDO PvP system not engaging enough. The game system is clearly designed towards 1v1s, which makes node wars kinda boring. And 1v1s are more often than not determined by the GS, a.k.a. the number of hours you spent bashing mobs. The ideas regarding the gameplay are very good (easy 9/10), but everything else around it in the game makes the PvP very meh to play (brings down the note of the PvP to 5/10 to me). 2. Not mentionning GW2, though more known for its open world PvE, is near criminal. I've spent this 2023 year testing the PvP modes of different games and understand what I like and what I don't. GW2 has probably the fairest game system for PvP, being low-entry and nearly having no vertical progression. The game being an action/tab-target hybrid (meaning: tab target with directional and cleaving systems) actually makes it so there is a very high skill cap between understanding the fundamental mechanics of movement, being able to know what your opponents is able to do and reading the flow of big fights. There has been a lot of balance changes -though still not enough- that resulted in a big diversification of "meta-slave" classes over the last year for the PvP modes. Sure, it's not for everyone, but I really think it deserved a mention at least.
So, real talk. Why isn't Warframe anywhere in this list? It does classify as a hub MMORPG if Vindictus does too. Public missions can experience the same jump-in/out of random players; there are dedicated areas hosting hundreds of players at the same time; etc. I get the strange feeling that you have a personal bias against Warframe, and I can't help but wonder why.

In pvp, i would like to add GW2, man, WvW and regular pvp are just way to fun to play, and for the last, it dont even require you to have the equipment, just plan the build and select it in the menu.
Mabi is a chill mmo to get started. Easily can get addicted if given time to play it. Playing back in 08-09 compared to now, it’s way more thing to do nowadays. Grind heavy in a way but it’s fun. Can be social also.
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis should at least get in the list of free to play or action combat. Yep its not the best but hey its free so I hope you check it out!

Not really any surprise with that list at the end. The only MMO I've played this year is ToF and I'm well aware of its flaws, so even though I'm still playing it daily, I'm not sure I'd actually recommend it...
Swtor is like one of the only mmos where I don't just skip the story dialogue. Some of the other mmos just have far too much reading and it takes me out of the game. (cough ff14)
Great video. Sadly, I've never made it more than 50+ hours into an MMO but if I would make the plunge its going to be Final Fantasy XIV for series familiarity and for all the news I've heard about the older expansions being improved with solo support and other improvements. However, your video certainty helped remind me of other greats like Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2 and Lost Ark. As for the video itself, some of the sections weren't clearly labelled and I think FF14 should have been in BestWorld/Exploration category for how gorgeous the vistas, cities and architecture look, but to each his own. I am a biased GW2 player. but I think you did the game dirty. the things you said about the other games do for open world that GW2 does not. it either does much better then you described or literally invented that feature. its pvp community is absolutely massive and people love it at large and small scale.

As always the intro is amazing, can't wait for duet!! I would say GW2, BDO, TESO, WOW and FF XIV (this 2 if you wanna P2P).. From those, I loved BDO characters and all related it, for GW2 kinda the same but loved PVP and WwW, TESO is a kinda normal one and for the other 2, I enjoyed the year I played in WOW but most likely won't play it again but FF XIV only played too little.
Sometimes it's not all about the combat but the story as well. Ff14 is so much anything that you could have wished for, it has the balance between grinding, questing and the story to booth that you will indulge and come to love the characters on the lore. I can't think of any mmo that was able to give that kind of experience other than ff14.
As you say it's all a bit subjective but I think it comes down to more than just a point tally. Obviously getting the basics is essential but it's often the less tangible things that define a game. How it feels perhaps, which can include ambiance, music, character voices and animations, art style. Does the world feel alive, with players, npcs, dynamic environments and general stuff going on. Has time and money been spent on good writing and acting. Are there things to find or stumble upon or is the world empty of nice little surprises hidden in seemingly random places for no good reason. This gives a sense that the developers care about their world and the people that will roam around it and makes the world feel like it has history. Does the game have wow moments, when you just sit there and think, that's beautiful or I can't believe they thought of that or these guys have really spent time on the detail. There are so many things that come together to make or break a game and in the end it's probably hard to know what until it happens. When it does the players stay, when it doesn't they move on.
I'd have *at least* put EVE Online in the "best free" category with a decently high rating. And there's very little argument for it to have any pay-to-win elements, too. Also, how is GW2, which is free-to-play and has been for years, in the paid section?

Yeah... U wait 2h in solo shuffle queue only to get railed cuz the specs are never balanced and every patch some are just stronger and others way weaker. Ppl joke about pvp in FFXIV, but even tho it's bad in many ways, u can at least be successful with every single job. Not a single one is weak and that applies to pve as well which is something Blizzard seems to be unable to accomplish.
Damn Lost Ark received very little love here, shame because the 2nd half of 2023 redeveloped a lot of Lost ark's worst systems. Still not the best but I think it deserves far more praise in it's current state!
A very small amount of gamers like it, it's really hard to play for the average gamer with raids, it takes a lot of time to get good gear to play new content, there's only 1 way to progress after a certain point (the raids) they have no other options to scale in PVP, guardians raids, it's a singular focused game and the one way to progress is heavily gate kept by the player base...not new player friendly at all 😂 the world is amazing but the game does very little to make you explore it besides the campaign...it'd be sick of they did world bosses or world guardian raids and had different ways to progress...the only reason I put it down was because the raids were so punishing people would flame you and then if you weren't a high ilvl you wouldn't get accepted into parties...and yes i know, skill issue...but im a dad with a full time job, im looking to unwind and have fun not stress 😂
Being pay to win will do that. It has such a great foundation too but seriously hampered by its bullshit endgame after playing through “babys first arpg”
It has to be a new game for me to come back to lost ark. The progression system is just ass. But it underpins the gameplay, so I doubt I will ever pick it up again
I am playing New World. My biggest complaint is "I'm tired of seeing wolves"! Granted I am only level 26 but I would think there would be more variety in mobs. The lack of trash mob variety makes the game feel repetitive and boring. The mobs are also incredibly easy to beat. To easy. Even the bosses I down in less than two minutes. Also, no gear drops from chests? I craft my own rare equipment because nothing drops in the open world! Even the largest housing is small, and the decorations look stupid. I'm already looking for a different game to play; New World is repetitive and boring.
lost ark has the best pve hands down, current retail wow is actually tragically bad only designed to milk people watching race to world first... Also hilarious that actual gutter mobile games getting higher scores than lost ark lol

TERA can stil be played via private server. "Menma tera" its very f2p friendly and gets regular updates

GW2 story is good but never is going to hold a candle to FFXIV.

Mabi is a chill mmo to get started. Easily can get addicted if given time to play it. Playing back in 08-09 compared to now, it’s way more thing to do nowadays. Grind heavy in a way but it’s fun. Can be social also.
Id argue that when Talking about combat, mechanics, dungeons, bosses, pvp and horizontall progression - lost ark is amazing.

The only MMO I've played this year is ToF and I'm well aware of its flaws, so even though I'm still playing it daily, I'm not sure I'd actually recommend it...

Swtor is like one of the only mmos where I don't just skip the story dialogue. Some of the other mmos just have far too much reading and it takes me out of the game. (cough ff14)
Great video. Sadly, I've never made it more than 50+ hours into an MMO but if I would make the plunge its going to be Final Fantasy XIV for series familiarity and for all the news I've heard about the older expansions being improved with solo support and other improvements. However, your video certainty helped remind me of other greats like Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2 and Lost Ark. As for the video itself, some of the sections weren't clearly labelled and I think FF14 should have been in BestWorld/Exploration category for how gorgeous the vistas, cities and architecture look, but to each his own. Thanks for making the video. Looking forward to watching more of your content. Keep up the great work MMOByte and company. :)

I would say GW2, BDO, TESO, WOW and FF XIV (this 2 if you wanna P2P).. From those, I loved BDO characters and all related it, for GW2 kinda the same but loved PVP and WwW, TESO is a kinda normal one and for the other 2, I enjoyed the year I played in WOW but most likely won't play it again but FF XIV only played too little.
Sometimes it's not all about the combat but the story as well. Ff14 is so much anything that you could have wished for, it has the balance between grinding, questing and the story to booth that you will indulge and come to love the characters on the lore. I can't think of any mmo that was able to give that kind of experience other than ff14.

How come you completely ignored lost ark?
As you say it's all a bit subjective but I think it comes down to more than just a point tally. Obviously getting the basics is essential but it's often the less tangible things that define a game. How it feels perhaps, which can include ambiance, music, character voices and animations, art style. Does the world feel alive, with players, npcs, dynamic environments and general stuff going on. Has time and money been spent on good writing and acting. Are there things to find or stumble upon or is the world empty of nice little surprises hidden in seemingly random places for no good reason. This gives a sense that the developers care about their world and the people that will roam around it and makes the world feel like it has history. Does the game have wow moments, when you just sit there and think, that's beautiful or I can't believe they thought of that or these guys have really spent time on the detail. There are so many things that come together to make or break a game and in the end it's probably hard to know what until it happens. When it does the players stay, when it doesn't they move on.

I'd have *at least* put EVE Online in the "best free" category with a decently high rating. And there's very little argument for it to have any pay-to-win elements, too. Also, how is GW2, which is free-to-play and has been for years, in the paid section?

Yeah... U wait 2h in solo shuffle queue only to get railed cuz the specs are never balanced and every patch some are just stronger and others way weaker. Ppl joke about pvp in FFXIV, but even tho it's bad in many ways, u can at least be successful with every single job. Not a single one is weak and that applies to pve as well which is something Blizzard seems to be unable to accomplish.
Damn Lost Ark received very little love here, shame because the 2nd half of 2023 redeveloped a lot of Lost ark's worst systems. Still not the best but I think it deserves far more praise in it's current state!
A very small amount of gamers like it, it's really hard to play for the average gamer with raids, it takes a lot of time to get good gear to play new content, there's only 1 way to progress after a certain point (the raids) they have no other options to scale in PVP, guardians raids, it's a singular focused game and the one way to progress is heavily gate kept by the player base...not new player friendly at all 😂 the world is amazing but the game does very little to make you explore it besides the campaign...it'd be sick of they did world bosses or world guardian raids and had different ways to progress...the only reason I put it down was because the raids were so punishing people would flame you and then if you weren't a high ilvl you wouldn't get accepted into parties...and yes i know, skill issue...but im a dad with a full time job, im looking to unwind and have fun not stress 😂

It has to be a new game for me to come back to lost ark. The progression system is just ass. But it underpins the gameplay, so I doubt I will ever pick it up again

I am playing New World. My biggest complaint is "I'm tired of seeing wolves"! Granted I am only level 26 but I would think there would be more variety in mobs. The lack of trash mob variety makes the game feel repetitive and boring. The mobs are also incredibly easy to beat. To easy. Even the bosses I down in less than two minutes. Also, no gear drops from chests? I craft my own rare equipment because nothing drops in the open world! Even the largest housing is small, and the decorations look stupid. I'm already looking for a different game to play; New World is repetitive and boring.
lost ark has the best pve hands down, current retail wow is actually tragically bad only designed to milk people watching race to world first... Also hilarious that actual gutter mobile games getting higher scores than lost ark lol
I personally am a fan of new world at the moment, I would put graphics and combat up there in the top 5 for both, just my opinion though

just so you know black desert online has pvp servers now i don't think people have been ganked in quite a while also if there was a soundtrack category FF14 would be at the top of that one
