Much comment about Gadd and rightly so, however the piano part played by Michael Omartian is quite amazing on its own. He read from charts written by Fagan while adding a few embellishments of his own. They rehearsed the song a couple of times, then recorded it in two takes! During the rehearsal, Gadd played straight and simple. No one knew what he had planned for the final take.
Wonderful piece of CLASSIC Steely Dan, minus the Fagen vocal…and the weird coach’s whistle… It’s just missing Shorter’s sax, but awesome, nonetheless….
Love you Wayne Shorter, but hearing the pristine Steve Gadd fills in all their glory is ASTONISHING.

Jon, it’s the lp version sans vocals, marimba, tenor sax, guitar solos and Donald’s whistle.
