This is the best hand shake diss next to the one where he sticks his hand out towards Johnny and give Ed a big hand shake. Love John's reaction. Priceless
3:41 Carson's snappy comeback to Rickles crack about Johnny on the tennis court, "What are you talking about? You've got a face that'll hold a three day rain!" Pricelesss 😂👍🏼🇺🇸
Carson's the only guy who could go toe to toe with Rickles. Every other person just kinda straps in and enjoys the ride and Carson actually adds to it.
0:48 - I always loved this part, when nearly on every appearance, Don ignored Carson and went straight to Ed to shake hands first, before finally acknowledging Carson. Simple, but great comedic effect.
He even got a shoutout in the Movie Reservoir Dogs ...Guy was like ...Can't you tell a joke? Bro was like no ...Guy is like then pretend you're Don Rickles or somebody.
There was a television biography of Carson where they described the "run sheet" for each show before it aired and they used to put notes about the guests on the "run sheet" so that Carson would know what to talk to them about. When Rickles was on the show, all they did was write "Rickles".
I've maybe watched this about 5 x already somehow landed on it tonight and laughed my head off, love the 3 of them playing off one another and Don is the Don of comedy
@@mac7083 If Trump did what Biden is doing, Fallon would attack. If Trump was senile like Biden and soiling his diapers like Biden, the insult stream would be endless. But Biden has a “D” next to his name and gets a pass. If you can’t see this or you deny this, you’re a tribalist.
Rickles and Carson were so good together, better than Letterman because Carson could hold his own when he needed to, whereas Letterman just let Rickles run through him. Two great legends I wish I got to grow up with, gone but never forgotten ❤️
Rickles was totally unique as a comic on the Tonight Show. He never came on the show and did stand-up. It wouldn't work as he needs the audience to play off of. He comes out, sits down and immediately begins playing off of Carson, McMahon and the audience. Amazing how he was always funny as he came out w/ no idea what was going to happen, pure ad lib.
When Will Smith hit Chris Rock, I thought of Don Rickles saying "be yourself, hit somebody" (talking about Frank Sinatra)., if somebody did that joke with Will Smith that would be the funniest
In Don Rickles early days he insulted my father who never watched or liked him. I always found him hilarious. RIP "Bullet head", thanks for the laughs.
@ Bruce Porter. Most guests on Johnny Carson's show were at their best because Carson could make them at ease and they would be a good interview. But unfortunately there were some guests that just would not relax and show who they are as people. Paul McCartney just couldn't relax and be himself when he appeared on Carson's show and was a boring interview as a result. Another interesting thing is that although Bob Hope had an open invitation to come on Carson's show anytime he wanted, he was Carson's least favorite guest because he would always just do his jokes and never revealed who he was as a human being.
Don was incredibly a witty and genious man! He meant by this that since everybody sent gift, they are delivering Ed a "message" telling him to stop having kids at this age! What a group of legends. RIP Don, Johnny and Ed.
To Don Rickles it didn't make any difference who you were rich/poor, black/white, Jew, Italian, Japanese, German, or American he insulted EVERYONE!!!! But actually it was considered an honor to be insulted by him. And back then, unlike now people had a sense of humor. He was the best!!!!
It was funny how Carson always would bring up Rickles getting married at 38 as a kind of running gag everytime he was on. These days it's actually pretty normal for a guy to get married a 38 or older, and increasingly people aren't getting married at all.
Don Rickles married his wife Barbara in March of 1965, they mentioned Don and Barbara just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, so wouldn't that make the year 1985 that this Tonight Show episode was aired not 1986? RIP Don Rickles, you will be missed.
❤❤❤I love Don Rickles so so very very much he’s an fantastic comedian and I miss him so so very very much. When I’m sad I put him on my UTube on my cellphone 😂😂😂then he makes me laugh
It must be said, the subtlety of that handshake is easy to miss. Clearly it looks like he dismissed Carson but if you look closely, you can see be kind of give John the impression that he's going to shake his hand and turns it more towards Dick. Vintage comedy.
Don Rickles was the best comedian, he could adlib his way until the end of his shows. I bet he would put a lot of "Politically Correct" SNOBS in their place had he lived. I certainly miss comedians like him.
Every time Don is on the show, he's always congratulating Johnny or Ed on their new marriages.
Lol, I know and I love that
Between Carson And Ed, must have been a dozen of marriages and divorces.😂😂

Carson's the only guy who could go toe to toe with Rickles.

Loved these shows. Can't stand late night now. These guys were the best. And they are missed...
Thankyou Mr Warmth for getting us thru this Pandemic 😉

GOLDEN's (GOOG) TUBE Hey it was their world.
@Big Bill O'Reilly And you're hanging around the men's washroom
No guarantees that they're there. Without Jesus, nobody makes it.
The simple fact that Carson hasn't haunted Jimmy Fallon to madness over what he's done to Johnny's show is proof positive that ghosts do not exist.
We don't know what's going on behind the scenes
Jimmy Fallon made a deal with the devil.
Love Fallon...... he lost his easy material when the Orange buffoon got booted from the White House..... but he’s still very funny.

This was an era of GIANTS in the entertainment industry!
May GOD bless them all for making so many of us laugh when we needed a good one.
When Late Night people had real talent and weren't on some "Political Mission". These guys had real talent unlike the stiffs of today.
Could watch this all day...
pure gold. when "funny" was funny and nobody got offended.

Correct, some comics were more suited for stand up and some were suited to sit on the panel.
Trucks
And Carson just let him go wherever he wanted to go.
No real interview, right.
@@cats0182 That was the genius of Carson... and why to this day he is the greatest host in television history.

With the money you have you can spit on the camera🤣🤣
Don Rickles is the only comedian that I can think of who used so many of the same joke successfully for 60 years.
They scrambled Don's drug reference about the band lol
Clean comedy, those were the days !
Yes, nothing but alcohol, divorce, and old age jokes.
The Sludge, but they were making fun and laughing at themselves!!
