    VW should have included auto dimming mirrors with the autobahn trim level. I mean I spent over 30k on the car and they didn't bother to add something as simple as this at the factory.

    That is fantastic. Seriously Paul... after I found your channel I've loved owning my GTI even more. I try to buy all parts and maintenance stuff from your site because your company has greatly improved my ownership experience. I started working on cars with an old VW Beetle which I still love to do... these videos make my new car the same. I hate paying a mechanic to do something I can do myself.

    Couple tips for those of you doing this on a car with Rain sensor and sun roof.
    -be careful taking the trim off around the rain sensor, it requires some patience. (the rain sensor does not come off the windshield and I just left it connected
    - pulling off the trim around the overhead console carefully is important and key to getting the other existing trim pieces off
    -the A-pillar trip piece doesn't come off as easy and the spring clips that hold it in will likely need to be replaced. (on mine there was a tab that prevented then from coming completely out and I had to almost destroy then to get then out). I was able to save 2 of the three clips, so the car is together until I can order a couple clips. I'm guessing they are very inexpensive parts.
    -when you install the wire for the mirror make sure you don't put the tie wrap around the drain hose for the sunroof
    - though it doesn't look the same as in the video the existing mirror twist off counter- clockwise just like the one without rain sensing. Be careful not to just twist the mirror and try grabbing the base firmly.
    - when you put the trim on around the mirror after the install, put the lower pieces on first then slide the upper console piece in
    -the wiring was just as in the video and it was very simple.
    -it took me a couple hours, being really careful and taking my time..
    Good luck
    PS- the mirror looks great, the compass is cool and the homelink programmed so easily I almost didn't believe it

      So if you have rain sensor, you still need to run the A-pillar wiring? I see some wire back there behind my mirror so I was wondering if it's pre-wired. I don't have the blind-spot monitor. 2016 Autobahn pkg. Thanks

    • @royaldm
      @royaldm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, unfortunately this one does not tap into the rain sensor wiring, you still need to run the wiring for the mirror.

    I successfully installed this mirror on a MK6 Jetta TDI. This applies to all TDI's, from 2011-2015. Mine had no rain sensor, so I utilized the appropriate one. I thought about replacing the windshield, but chose not to, maybe something to do at a later date. The connectors that come with this kit won't work since the TDI uses the Euroswitch connector. (which is a good thing cause you can upgrade that with a european version that gives you fogs. Anyways, the two wires that go to mirror is yellow with a black tracer which is connected to switched +12 volts and the brown wire which you will tie to ground. I tapped off the wires on the lightswitch, using the Xz which is pin 1, and the 31 which is directly across from pin1 and has a brown wire going to it. I guess brown mean ground. I followed these instructions on pretty much everything else, but I did have to trim the cover just a tad to allow it fit between the mirror mount and the headliner. Works perfect and looks much better than the flip style that came with the car. Wouldn't be too hard for an after market seller to modify these to work in the Mk6. hint hint hint.

    Great video. I did similar on MY17 MK7 R last fall. Bought 2016 Passat frameless mirror, and was plug and play in my car (no wires needed). Only thing that didn't fit was MY17 wire trim plastic. Tried 2016 version trim, no go either. Somehow using both, managed to get the trim stuck in place, but with a gap on where upper and lower pieces meet. Not fit and finish, but mirror works, and rain sensors still do also. (My car is not equipped with DAP fyi) love the frameless look!

      I'm kinda late to the party, but as I just did this upgrade on my 2019 GTI that has rain sensing wipers, I figure I can at least help others who stumble on this video. The rain sensor is directly behind the mirror mounting point on the window, and there's a different-looking attachment to that mounting point that only takes an eighth of a turn to tighten/loosen. Your car already has plastic coverings (two pieces) to hide the rain sensor's wiring, which you'll also use for the mirror's wiring. You'll need to remove the bottom plastic piece by loosening the two tabs on each side that lock with the top piece (I found it helpful to push in the sides of the top piece and to push a pry tool down into the gap), then sliding the bottom piece straight down (there's a channel on each side of the mirror-side attachment point for guiding the bottom piece's movement; see your new mirror to help you figure out the angle). The top piece won't come out until you twist the mirror out. Other than that, at least for GTIs, everything's the same!

    Best video on the subject. Very clear. Thanks so much! Bummer the Passat doesn't offer homelink mirrors anymore. Odd. I got one for $200, though. Dealer would have more than doubled that cost for installation!

  • @johnbcardin

    Advice to people doing this. My a piller on my 2016 did not pop off so easy. I had Christmas tree Clips to deal with both on the removal and replacing. My headliner was super tight to the roof and not nearly as easy to fish the wires across as this one. Be prepared to be frustrated. Also the last trim cover he installed on his s does allow wires to be shown. You may need to purchase a new trim plate to make it look fitted.

    Man, I wish when I broke my windshield with rain sensor that I requested a non rain sensor windshield because it is so much easier to deal with. I don't even need or ever use the rain sensing feature. This looked so easy to install.

  • @greg_takacs

    It appears that you either had that A pillar trim removed before or the clips are of the wrong kind. The first two clips in the pillar cover are the lock kinds which prevent the pillar cover from flying off should the airbags deploy. Same lock clips also prevent you from pulling the cover off in the fashion depicted in the video.

    Thanks!

  • @misfit77
    @misfit77 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the great product. For other people considering this.
    Trim may vary. Wife's jetta did not have a trim piece on the light switch. So having slack in the harness is not going to work.
    Removing the visor clip helped tucking wires.
    Removal of the A pillar will not be this easy. It requires some fenagling and possibly new hardware. It will slightly pop out to make things easier.
    I know its not recommended, but I do not see how tucking the wires without zip tying will interfere with the airbag. Even if the wires are the way, when the bag deploys a measly little wire aint going to stop it. The wire is the least of you problem when that moment comes.
    To test the auto dim, I had to turn the garage lights off.

      Update - The auto dimming headlights/brights is controlled by the lane assist camera so that should not be an issue, I found that information in my owners manual, I had initially thought it was part of the mirror.
      -
      I completed the install without issue and posted a couple videos on my channel, the mirror I ordered fit perfectly and I was able to use the existing wiring harness. Rain sensor, auto dimming mirror and automatic headlights are fine but I have not yet tested the headlight feature that will turn the brights on and off when there are oncoming cars. And the HomeLink is great!
