- January 27, 1976 - Representing the New York Nets, high-flying forward Julius Erving took home the 1976 ABA Slam Dunk championship on the heels of a showstopping takeoff and finish from the free throw line.

The swooping dunk is a lost and undeveloped style of dunking. David Thompson is really the foundation of modern dunking.
He holds a basketball like I hold an orange 😮. No one was more fun to watch than Dr. J. What happy memories.
The way him and Michael Jordan held a ball was different from anyone else
He’s a good substitute for MJ, but I’d still take MJ. You look, and see that Dr. J did the free throw dunk without dribbling. That’s easier to do than to dribble like MJ did, and Dr. J had half his foot on the line. Dr. J is the originator though 👍
You guys need to watch some Connie Hawkins highlights if you think no one palmed a ball like Jordan or Dr. J.
A travesty the league blackballed him in his best years
Some people will argue that compared to today's NBA Julius Erving does not stand out. This is nonsense. An athlete's career must be evaluated by how he performed in his own era for the sake of fairness. Doc was an original that advanced the game of basketball on many levels.
He would be excellent in today's NBA. The man can still dunk in his mid-60s. Probably only about 10 guys in the NBA have his leaping ability, let alone his playmakiing, defense, ability to score off the pass, or create his own shot. Dr. J was still scoring 20 pts per game on 49.5% shooting at the end of his career, when Jordan was in the NBA. It's not like he played in 1931.

True statement. Sometimes even the “analysts/journalists” really don’t give love to the players that laid the foundation for the players of today. Despite the pizzazz he possessed Dr. J is a forgotten player, even Bob Pettit and George Mikan. They were dominant in their own ways, they could definitely compete in any era and deserve to be in the conversation of the best/greatest to ever play the game.
Dr. J is my all-time favorite basketball player
Julius Erving's first year in the ABA was the 71-72 season. He was 21 y/o fresh from UMASS. He carried the Virginia Squires through the regular season and a long playoff run. In the 11 playoff games that season he averaged 33 points and 20 rebounds per game. He scored 53 points in a game against Florida. He had another playoff game where he scored 39 points with 27 rebounds. The next round was against Rick Barry and the New York Nets. Same eye-popping stats, but the Nets were a very good team. Virginia lost the series 4-3. The next season for the Squires, Dr. J averaged 32 points and 12 rebounds. Norfolk Scope was a fun place to be for those first 2 amazing seasons. It was must watch TV and radio. And Julius was always a complete class act. During that time in Virginia he played with Charlie Scott and rookie George "Ice Man" Gervin before moving on to play for the Nets.

He played for Philly 76-77. I saw him from 3 rows back when we won the championship.

There has only been ONE DOCTOR! I remember watching the New Yorks Nets on WOR-TV and I have seen highlights of Julius Erving when he was with the Virginia Squires and he WAS The Greatest Basketball Player in the World!

Think you can tell that he would've also completed that free-throw line dunk if the basket was a bit further away there, meaning he could probably do it even if stepping just before the free-throw line, at that time... Could've even pulled a "free-throw" line between the legs or something, if people were practicing and giving the same emphasis to dunking as they do nowadays. Dr J is simply one of the best players, one of the best athletes and one of the best dunkers in basketball history, but that is well known.

I was blessed to see the ABA when I was a kid. I'll never forget my old man's reaction the first time Dr. J jammed one from the free throw line.

Athletes today jump way higher than Doc but they don't have to HANDS to do that dunk.

This Slam Dunk Contest was not the very first; it was the first "Official" Slam Dunk Contest. The first actual one took place in front of just over 10,000 at half time at the previous year's 1975 ABA All Star Game in San Antonio - and it was a spontaneous unofficial event that the players simply did on their own. While my memory's a little hazy about all the contestants and I have found no video of the game, let alone its half time events, they were pretty much the same high flyers as in this 1976 video from Denver.
What isn't hazy is my memory of Dr.J's winning dunk. Julius started running from the opposite corner with a ball in each hand. I'm not sure exactly where he took off from, but it was somewhere at or beyond the free throw line. Flying rapidly through the air, he slowly turned a 180 so that he reached the basket with his back to it. From there he tomahawked each ball over his opposite shoulder, before gracefully landing with knees bent and arms outstretched to the sides taking in the roar of the stunned & delirious crowd. It was the most incredible combination of speed, power, athleticism, finesse, and ballet-like body control I have ever seen in any athletic event.
After 60 years as a basketball junkie, I still watch NBA All Star Dunk Contests. I've seen some great dunks over the years. But none compare with that one, from 25 year old Dr J at his physical peak.

If you haven't closely watched Damian Lillard, I encourage you to do so: Drops jaws with his plays & shots, puts the team on his back, rises to the moment, leads in the locker room, improves every year, not afraid to jaw and show up opponents who deserve it, gives honest & forthright interviews, plays to and acknowledges the fans, and is a community leader. He is an all timer.

I was 15 years old and at this All-Star event. So glad my mom was a basketball fan and got tickets for this. A little sad seeing David Thompson there and what could have been......

My dad was a Hampton Virginia policeman...he was always working the Squires games at the coliseum..i never actually remember missing a game when he played...very strange about the home schedule..home games were played at the Hampton coliseum...Norfolk scope and Richmond coliseum
David Thompson was also mentioned, these were the guys that had the biggest influence on MJ.
DT had the contest won up until the freethrow line dunk by Dr. J. That is what won it for him. DT had more powerful and elaborate dunks, but no one had done the freethrow line dunk before like that. I remember watching that as a kid, I grew up in Denver and was a major Nuggets fan. A friend of my family was one of the consortium owners of the Nuggets at that time. Used to get great seats at mid-court and 4 rows back from the scorers bench when the family friend didn't want to go the game. It was great.

I mean he wouldn't. He's great because he's a pioneer but in today's day athletes jump higher and farther then him. Also Dr j mis range was okay at best and his 3 pointer was almost non existent
@@AntdaGreat Dr J could dunk from foul line and so could wilt....give them modern training and they would be even more athletic. Outside shooting was Js only weakness but that would not matter now with the wide open offenses and big men not allowed to camp in lane anymore. U are not allowed to play real defense in today's NBA or NFL
@@leoderosia9279 that's been proven false. Zone defense is harder to get pass then man to man like in the 90's. Man to man is easy to break off if you have good handles and can get passed the defender but zone even if you get passed them there's always gonna be a man waiting to come out of nowhere and contest the shot. I ain't explain it good but u can find videos of people explaining zone defense and man to man and why zone defense us harder
@@AntdaGreat I am 55 now and it was much harder to score near the hoop in 80s because defenses were packed in, this is easy to understand ....lbj makes a living getting ez shots that would not have been there pre 2000.

Actually, you're incorrect. Connie Hawkins was before Dr J. And prior to him was Gus Williams with his powerful windmill and tomahawk dunks. Hawkins was flashier. Julius combined both styles with his own silkly flows to the ring and followed with a hard slam in many cases(Just ask Michael cooper). And Dr J had that awesome hang time.
David Thompson said the rules for this competition were that they had to do certain dunks starting from different areas on the court. Wondering if they should go back to that format

Afro Dr. J could arguably be considered the greatest of all time. I know he was super frustrated to have to yield to the owners which wanted him to slow down his game and not be so dominant. I know he looked at Jordan and thought about what the rest of his career could have looked like if they would have let him be free to dominate like he did in the ABA. Once he cut off that Afro he began to look and act like a old man.
He was the first black astronaut. As the saying goes, "Houston, we've got a lift off".
Greatest in game dunker,made 7 footers look like children as he sore ,glided and dunk on them.Even jordan had about a foot in front of the free throw line as he took off and dunked it.There have been many straight out vertical dunkers but just a true few gliders Dr J,Clyde and Jordan dunking against real defensive competition not just doing 360 and freestyle dunks against no defense on breakaways.Dr J did it against Kareem,Walton,Artis Gilmore 7 3 footers posterizing all of them.On a real defensive game in his prime give Julius,ABA.

@@ThomUdin Drexler's was incredible but he did stop about a foot over the free throw line. Giannis foot as about 3 inches past it. Technically nobody has ever done it during a game but Giannis is close enough...for now.

I remember Dr J windmill slam against Bobby Jones. Awesome. And i was a Nuggets fan...the nba stole so much from the aba. 3 point shot. They stole their best players in the post merger draft which the aba teams weren't allowed to participate. They didn't give them tv money for 3 years. Thats why it took so long for an aba team to win the O'Brien trophy. Carl Scheer started it all with the first slam dunk contest and is just a footnote in basketball history. Way to go nuggets for winning it all last year.
