Well met! I used to play WFRP 1ed in my youth, got 4ed 6 months ago to GM it to my family and your Rules Bites have been an invaluable asset in not only explaining the rules in simple format in relatively short videos but also your attitude is positive and gave me motivation to slog through the often illogical, confusing and lacking rulebook by Cubicle7. So, great videos, thank you! I noticed that these WHRP videos have gotten a lot more views than videos about other systems on your channel, so maybe you could start doing live streams of game sessions and then post them as videos... Pretty please 🙂
You are so right about the viewership. The WFRP Rules Bites and Tides of Burgle campaign are, by far, our most popular. We've promised a second season of Tides of Burgle. I suppose I'd better make that happen!
Just found this from the suggestions in the right hand bar/list.... made up, what a find. I realise this is over a year old now, but i like the style and pacing of the vids. I'm in my 50's now, used to game a lot up until 20 ish years ago, WH 1st Ed was one of my faves, (started with RQ2, D&D, and WH 1st Ed, and some others), slowly got back into tabletop games over the last couple of years, starting with boardgames, and recently back into RPGs with WH 1st Ed again... I have already bought 4th Ed, and am building up the drive to jump into it... these vids are going to be a massive help. Thanks for doing them!
Egg-O-Deth That’s quite a resume!! Glad to meet you. Let us know if you’d be open to playing in one of our virtual campaigns! We stream live in most cases. I prefer the table but it’s lots of fun!
@@MythBrigade Thanks, I have played lots of RPG's over those early years, but not so many of the modern ones, one of the reasons for jumping at 4th Ed, new but familiar :) Hopefully playing this will tune me in to the modern design style (I also have M-Space to try, plus Altered Carbon RPG coming sometime.) As for joining in with you guys, that is an awesome offer, but sadly one i would have to decline. I'm in the UK, the time difference makes it challenging, and ultimately the main reason being that I would be way too shy/embarrassed to get involved; I rarely get 'in character' first person/actor style. I often play with a mix of "my character does this..." or "I do such and such" and occassionally I will interact with the GM NPC directly as my character ie "Barkeep, 3 of your finest for my friends here please", but not putting on the voices/accents :D Now to watch the rest of the series!
Great video! I've just started playing again after 25 years, and I'm going from 1st edition to 4th edition. What a rush..!! 4th edition really make it easier to play and to maintain the flow in the game. So, I've just started a mini adventure with my wife and kids (they've never played any RPG before using a rule book, pencil and paper, etc.) and I have to admit being a GM again after 25 years really make me feel a bit rusty. Anyway, thanks for making videos like this one. It's helpful and makes it easier (for me) to understand the rules a 'bit better,
CreativeFosse Thanks so much for the feedback! I was a complete Warhammer newbie until earlier this year as were all but one of our players. After 30 years of playing other games, making these videos is helping us digest the system! How amazing is it that you get to run a game with your family?! I tried that a few times with D&D 3.5 but it never panned out! Anyway... thanks again and enjoy your return to the Old World!
Hey CreativeFosse! It sure does make it a lot easier. Combat can definitely start to lag with a larger group and I suspect we'll see it in our upcoming streams! Glad you're enjoying and thanks so much for the feedback!
Andrew Cook The system can definitely be a little tricky if you’re used to systems like D&D or Pathfinder (was certainly the case with us)! Glad we could help a little!
I've gotten through episode 8 so far and can easily say that this series has been an excellent resource for condensing learning the rules of WH4E. Heh, as a warning, some of the humor throughout can be VERY cheesy, but I can't say I didn't chuckle at least once and more importantly everything was presented in a way that's very easy to digest. @MythBrigade, thanks for making these videos!
I am awaiting my core rulebook and The Enemy Within, but just wanted to say that this was a nicely done video (even with the obvious 95/5 slip). Red ... no, blue! Aeeayaahhahaaaaa ...
I thought the base difficulty was +20... and easy is +40. because your characteristics are usually around 30, and a +20 makes the target 50... so you will succeed every other attempt. And that's what you are supposed to be rolling most of the time. Except in combat where everything is challenging and then the default becomes +0.
Hi Jason, im glad that i have found you here. I've recently startet my adventure with wh4th, i'd like to add that it is my 1st time playing paper rpg. Im sure that im going to watch every single wideo now that our group just finnished a starter :D
Hey! So sorry for the gnarly delay in responding! Happy you're getting into 4th Edition. The world of Warhammer is one of my absolute favorites. We're due to play a second season in our Tides of Nurgle campaign! Here's hoping we'll see you there.
I'm watching this video on my wife's account. I've been running a fantasy game for the last two weeks and it's been great. It's good to have someone who understands the rules so I can check in when I need clarification. Excellent video, excellent channel.
I would love some page references for the info as you go along. I was curious as to where you read that bonuses are in increments of 20. I’m not familiar with that. Regardless I’m loving this video. New sub! I realize I’m a bit late with this request as I see you already have 12 episodes....
They're not as far as I can see, unless he's talking about something else. The difficulty chart lists them in increments of 20 but the GM can assign any modifier he chooses.
Great system! Highly recommend it. However, we had to limit bonuses to +3, and even that was too much. We're now considering limiting it further, maybe even to +1. Otherwise, it gets out of hand.
Warhammer was my first rpg in the 80s but I bought the 3rd ed a few years ago and was very dissatisfied. I was wondering what the new edition was like and your vids are proving invaluable. Your tutorial teaching style is really easy to follow and you articulate so well. Just a recommendation would be to maybe reduce the volume of the background music which imo is a little loud, at least for me. Thanks so much for making these vids
Hey War Panda! Thanks for the feedback and the follow. I think you're spot on with the backing music. I think it was my subconscious way of trying to bury what I was nervous was a sub-par performance! Great to know it was helpful. Thinking about what's next... Any requests?
MythBrigade Not subpar at all-it’s one of my favourite tutorials I’ve watched and I’m a beast for rule tutorials. I made a few wargame vids myself and there were complaints over the volume of the background music. It’s hard to judge. Speaking of Judges, I’m a big fan of Judge Dredd with some of my favourite rpg memories are playing the old GW rules. I still have those but I saw that there are several newer incarnations including a very recent one by Rebellion and EN using W.O.I.N system which I’m unfamiliar with. Might not be a system or setting that you or your viewers may be interested in. I’m also interested in a RPG set in the 80’s, small town, coming of age type mystery solving; Stranger Things genre I guess. Keep up the good work.
War Panda Tales from the Loop comes to mind when you mention the 1980s! I’ve heard a lot about it but haven’t played it. I’ll check out the JD game. By far one of my favorite characters as well!
Nice vid! I ve bought the starter set because I want to run the game to my players (I usually GM Cthulhu). Gming Cthulhu I ve got no problem with d100 but I have got a question about the dramatic test. It says that it's used to see how well you succeed, cool. But does it come into play after a simple test or instead of that? I've been reading the adv in the starter set and sometimes goes with simple tests sometimes goes with dramatic tests. How should I decide which one to go for? (Don't have the core book). Thanks!
Discharge Thegamecat Very much instead of. Simple tests are only used where you don’t care how well the character does. In practice, I find I use them pretty rarely. Even with subtle things like, say, listening a door SL can be used to determine the story. A low SL could mean they hear a voice but can’t make out the words. A high one could mean they pick up what is said along with the Breton accent. Kind of like CoC’s various levels in a way! Also 🤘 for CoC!
@@MythBrigade thanks for the reply. Can't wait to run the starter adv with my group. Gotcha about the testing thing .. will keep on watching your video..need to learn :D
Cornelius Wells HOLY CRAP! See what happens when you don’t have an editor?! That was obviously supposed to state 5 or below! I mis-spoken for sure. I think this was filmed at about 3AM after a long day. No excuse but I was wiped! LOL I will update the description to reflect the error! Thanks Cornelius.
I'm watching this because I was roped into playing this with friends and I have jack shit interest in Warhammer Fantasy. So I am not going to read the book and we start tomorrow. -yay-
There's several points throughout the video where you trail off a bit at the ends of your sentences and it gets pretty hard to hear what you're saying.
Hey BlueSatoshi. Yeah. Not one of my prouder moments. First attempt at this type of content. I think you'll find subsequent episodes to be a little better. More stupid dad jokes? Yeah. But better production value!
Honestly, just comparing the tens on a dramatic test is a bit meh. Iiirc it was the tens of the total difference in older editions (at least FFG 40k stuff, Dark Heresy and such). This eliminates the arbitrary jump in success intensity when you cross into a new then (so 39 to 40 isn't that much better than 4 to 41, stat bonus is still a factor though...).
Check out Savage Worlds as well! Pretty tight rules system and a recent relationship with Paizo (Pathfinder). Check out our Rules Bites series on that system for a comparison! This was our first attempt. Pretty cringey. I was tired and nervous as hell. :).
Owned and struggled with this game for almost two years now and finally concluded that i just dont want to play it… I love the setting and would love nothing else but be allin and buy everything they release, but the ruleset is a convoluted mess…there is no slickness to it, no thread running through it all to give it consistency, just a plentora of systems required to offer all its variety but at the same time, imo, just sucks all fun out of it. Add to that the needlessly silly amount of meta currencies, and the fact that the game isnt even deadly and dangerous anymore (not as it used to be anyway) and i see no reason to play this over 2nd. Its a damn shame, C7 makes amazing books and this is no exception, but the rulesystem of 4th is unsalvageable… Like your videos though, very well done!
At long last! Someone who actually *knows* what the hell they're doing! Ye gods, I've needed this kind of channel.
Lazurman You give me too much credit!! lol
Just got the book and this is saving my life. Love the setting but being a new GM to this system can be tough. Thanks for the help!
Rolero Caducado Agreed! I stumble with it still. So many years of muscle memory with less complex systems!
