I believe they came up with the name cheap trick while at a slade show. Drummers are the first to burn out, at least power drummers. I think this drummer is Rick's son, that's awesome.
Jon... no. I understand you say that as a compliment. they are no garage band. Bun E dude is one of the best most articulate drummers ever. Tom Petersen... dude actually invented the 12-string bass guitar and played it like a rhythm guitar. Vocals have melody and harmony w/ Rick and Tom. This is the antithesis of a garage band.
Really good show. I'm old and I have seen just about everybody in the 70s and 80s, but I've never seen these guys LIVE. I've always been a fan but somehow missed them.
There’s no one on earth that looks as cool slinging an Explorer (Hamer or Gibson) than Rick Nielsen. Saw them in 1980 (Gulf Coast Coliseum, Biloxi MS). Being positioned directly in front of Rick (and his massive guitar rig) was unforgettable. Loud would be an understatement. Every time he struck a power-chord was like a punch in the chest. It was a glorious rock ‘n’ roll experience,…even though, my girlfriend didn’t seem to appreciate Rick as much as I did (She was too busy admiring Robin).
The fact that Robin Zander kept this vocal range until he was past 60 years old is astonishing. What is he here, 58 or so? Talk about The Man with a Thousand Voices.
Yes. His voice has always impressed me, never cracking or not finding the range. I remember seeing them at least twice one year in the late 70s where they opened for both Foreigner and Kansas. I think the constant touring really toughened Robin's voice.
I personally saw Rick Nielsen flip a guitar pick from stage to the back of Emo's old venue on 6th street. At least 200+ ft like a lazer ZIP! Then I seen Mr Zander outside hanging by tour bus with peeps. very cool.
I saw them twice by in the late 70's! The girls were screaming so loud you couldn't hear the band! The true spirit of Rock lives in the soul of this super group! You want rock? These guys deliver!
Had a friend in Houston who worked for CBS records and he got us backstage for a Cheap Trick show in the 70s. Before the show we saw Rick, called out his name and he stopped talked with us for a few minutes. Chatty and friendly and funny. He did complain that he was experiencing debilitating insomnia - hope he's found a solution for that. Fun band, great performers live.
