Orthodox Rabbi speaks on his Transcendental Meditation practice
I'm Abe Shainberg. I'm the son of holocaust survivors. My parents were from Warsaw, Poland and they came to this country via different routes. We grew up on the lower east side in a fascinating world of Judaism but they also wanted to become modern so my father did not have a beard, wore a grey suit and went into the real estate business.
Question: How did you become a Rabbi?
I went to Rabbi Jacob Joseph School on Henry Street in the Lower East Side from kindergarten through high school, and then attended Brooklyn College at the Flatbush campus.
We learned the Torah, we studied the Torah. The more you study the Torah the more you live it.
Question: How did you first learn about Transcendental Meditation?
I first heard about Transcendental Meditation from Joanna who is a teacher of TM. I wanted to learn more so I asked what it was all about. Obviously, Maharishi is not my rabbi, but every tape I listened to, everything Maharishi said, was exactly on par with the Torah. I couldn't believe it. Not a word was off. This wasn't 'new age;' this is the wisdom of the ages. Maharishi came to the same conclusion arrived at by the greatest rabbis.
Transcendental Meditation is not a religion.

I think it's a great practice, and I'm eager to learn. no idea how to really start, but im sure it can help me in a variety of ways. It is just a procedure. I do love the Maharishi. How can you not?
