At the same level, in all four directions, for every 4th block - check. (again: with a prospector radius of 8 - the entire chunk on this horizon is checked). And then (just like you) - a problem on triangulating the found deposit. ))) P.S. The experience of playing GregTech is evident: although it is easier to search for ores (you don't need to search for Maxima), at first - as a prospector, you use the GregTech hammer (prospecting radius - 5) :)
